00:38<bingo>i have just installed linux
00:38<bingo>it rocks
00:38<Calinou>good for you :]
00:39<bingo>do you have webcam?
00:39<scientes>how do i make diff only report new lines in file 2, and not removed lines?
00:40<bingo>are these messages posted somewhere online?
00:41<Calinou>bingo, no, IRC doesn't support webcam
00:42<Calinou>not sure if the debian channels are logged, though
00:42<bingo>ok. thanks@calinou
00:42<bingo>how do you log out of irc?
00:42-!-ztux [~ztux@] has joined #debian
00:42<Calinou>just close your client? if you're using a webchat just close the tab
00:43<bingo>i have a webcam but i can't turn it off. i used to be able to when i had windows
00:45<bingo>is there a way to turn it off without unplugging it or blacklist its driver?
00:45-!-kamal [] has joined #debian

00:46<scientes>how do i create a patch/diff that only adds lines?
00:47-!-ztux [~ztux@] has left #debian []
00:48<Calinou>bingo, why would you want to turn it off?
00:49<Calinou>linux isn't obscure, unlike windows. unless you're using some chat program (IRC has no webcam support, again), it will not be used
00:49<bingo>well it is on constantly i don't want it to accidentally recording and broadcasting over the internet
00:50<bingo>i will use it to skype
00:50<Calinou>blame the manufacturer for not putting proper linux support
00:50<Calinou>skype on linux? meh
00:50<bingo>what do you use for voip?

00:51<bingo>my friends and family have skype accounts. are there open source alternatives i can use?
00:52<Calinou>voip? mumble/teamspeak
00:53<Calinou>mumble is opensource, but it is originally made for gaming :P
00:54<bingo>unfortunately my family and friends are using windows
00:54<bingo>maybe they can get mumble for windows
00:57<bingo>is there a way to explore directories like in windows?
00:57<bingo>using gui to "browse" your files

09:26<rgms>Hi. Is it possible to dd the partition table from a bigger disk to a smaller one without problems? The extra space is unallocated
09:26<rgms>to clone the whole disk, I mean
09:27<rgms>I want to clone a 160GB HDD on a 60GB SSD
09:29<ompaul>no the inode table would get very broken in the mean time - if you can resize the hdd in the mean time - however it might be safer to do an install on the sdd and then make a backup of that

09:30<rgms>what do you mean by "resize the hdd in the mean time"?
09:31<ompaul>rgms: if you can force the hdd to be less than 160 but that is a dangerous route unless you are used to doing it
09:32<haylo>rgms, i have done this, and its a bad idea. The only real success i have had with dd'ing back and forth like that is with identical drives
09:32<ompaul>rgms: I don't know what fs / or if you have lvm
09:32<rgms>I'm running ext4, no lvm

10:13<SynrG>if you are switching to make the new disk the new /, yes, you need to change fstab. that goes without saying
10:13<SynrG>you would need to do that whether you mount by uuid or not
10:14<pparadis>you can refer to partitions by their uuids or by device name (sda[x], etc). either way, if you're using uuid-based naming in /etc/fstab, then you need to update /etc/fstab with the appropriate uuid for a partition. however, copying files does not copy a uuid for a partition.
10:15<rgms>what about the MBR, will the system be able to boot with just the boot flag?
10:16<pparadis>you determine where grub gets installed. typically, it needs to be installed to the MBR of a drive, not a partition.
10:16<pparadis>depending on what you move around, you may need to run update-grub afterward. other than that, it should just work.

10:19<rgms>but the target disk is smaller
10:20<rgms>I was told resizing and dd'ing would break the inode table
10:21<pparadis>rgms: so either shrink the source filesystem to fit before you do the dd, or go with it as is and fsck -fy the destination filesystem after you run out of space.
10:22<pparadis>(and resize2fs it down as well)
