00:11<vook>flynn_: caps lock flashing signifies kernel panic. Have you checked logs ? Enabled kdump ?
00:12<flynn_>Don't know about any of that.
00:12<flynn_>Why is the kernel panicking? Is this a bad kernel neighborhood?
00:12<vook>flynn_: next time it happens, take not of the time. Once you get it to boot up again, browse through the file /var/log/messages, looking for the time/date when it occurred.
00:13<vook>You probably have some flakey hardware.
00:13<flynn_>would a flakey wireless card do it?
00:13-!-fisted [] has joined #debian
00:14<vook>better yet, browse through /var/log/messages any time you have a chance - you can find out all kinds of interesting stuff.
00:14<vook>just about any device could do it.
00:16<flynn_>Can't open that file.
00:16<flynn_>Do you have to be root?
00:16<vook>you need to be root, yep

02:24<Shedding>I am having some trouble.. and I've tried reading numerous posts before coming here
02:24*Dr_O_ notices IngCr3at1on is no longer here!
02:25<Shedding>looking at toping
02:25<Shedding>I mean
02:26<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on See <smart questions><errors>.
02:26<Dr_O_>my bad... I thought the topic said "just ask.. don't ask to ask"... so go on!
02:26<Shedding>I have an old computer with debian on it. I want to extract data from it - however, when I use ntfs it only allows read only
02:27<Shedding>I tried ntfs-3g
02:27<Shedding>but the package is not installed
02:27<Shedding>I tried apt-get install ntfs-3g
02:27-!-kriller [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:27<Shedding>and it looks like lenny can't find it
02:27<Shedding>I tried changing the source.list
02:27<Dr_O_>ok... so what are you copying onto?
02:27<ompaul>Shedding: eh, to extract data all you need to do is write
02:27<Shedding>and I get a "couldn't find package ntfs-3g"
02:27<Dr_O_>doe the computer in question have a network?
02:27<jm_>please don't use enter key so often
02:27<ompaul>Shedding: eh, to extract data all you need to do is read actually
02:27<Shedding>an external hard drive
02:27<Shedding>yes it does
02:28<Shedding>I can ping the internet
02:28<dpkg>The enter key is not a substitute for punctuation. Hitting enter unnecessarily makes it difficult to follow what you are saying. Consider using ',', '. ', ';', '...', '---', or ':' instead. If you hit enter too often, you will be autokicked by debhelper for flooding the channel.
02:28<Shedding>well, no I mean
02:28<Shedding>I need to extract data from the linux machine to the ntfs hard drive
02:28<Dr_O_>Well in essance you cannot!
02:28<Shedding>sorry about that.
02:28<ompaul>Shedding: you are heading to being ignored, that's a windows problem install pscp.exe on the windows box
02:29<jpinx>Shedding: the linux machine will need ntfs-3g installed
02:29<Shedding>yes. I am trying to install the ntfs-3g packages. But it cannot find them.
02:29<ompaul>just do the simple thing - tar the data on the linux box - and use pscp to copy it to the linux box
02:29<Dr_O_>does lenny have ntfs-3g??
02:29<jpinx>Shedding: then you can sshfs or rsync from linux to wondows
02:29<jm_>Shedding: what's in your sources.list for lenny? "/msg dpkg paste" if you need to paste several lines

02:30<Dr_O_>Shedding: Do you have another computer on the network?
02:30<Shedding>I also have a NAS which I can ping
02:31-!-ao2 [~u@2001:1418:117::1] has joined #debian
02:31<Shedding>I tried mounting the ip with cifs. but it did not work
02:31<Dr_O_>Ah... well you want to copy from the debian machine to the network NAS
02:31<Shedding>yes dr.0
02:31<Shedding>either that, or copy the data to an external hard drive.
02:31<Shedding>This machine is really old and the raid is failing. There is a lot of data needed, b ut the data can no longer be accessed through smb
02:32<Shedding>It used to be a network file server
02:32<ompaul>Shedding: this problem was solved by my clue, I'll say it again, 1) install pscp.exe on the windows machine 2) copy the data - if there is a lot of it use tar to tar the data 3) take the time saved to upgrade lenny to squeeze and then deal with other issues
02:32<Shedding>ok ompaul. Let me do a search online on what pscp is.
02:32<ompaul>Shedding: it is what you want
02:33<Shedding>ohhh it is an ftp client
02:33<ompaul>secure client
02:33<Dr_O_>Shedding: search for putty, pscp is part of the putty suite of progs
02:33-!-jardiamj [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
02:33<jm_>or use rsync for windows

02:34<ompaul>rsync for windows is a bad idea - rsync on cygwin is a great idea
02:34<Shedding>the nas has an ftp server available
02:34<Shedding>I can just ftp to the nas
02:34<Dr_O_>When you have a network external hard drives and usb sticks and floppyies and cd's etc become a thing of the past!
02:34<jm_>I love such unqualified comments
02:34-!-Romik [] has joined #debian
02:34<Dr_O_>well lenny has lots of ftp progs available
02:35<ompaul>because (and I'm way offtopic here) the considerations to the windows file system makes for a more awkward command line for the rsync for windows

02:45<Shedding>great I mean
02:46<Dr_O_>Shedding: lftp or ncftp is the way to go with the ftp method. Install either of these and read the man pages... or install pscp on your wondows machien and pull the data off

03:23<Shedding>ompaul: absolutely true. There is also one other reason I didn't do the other
03:23<ompaul> Shedding: you are heading to being ignored, that's a windows problem install pscp.exe on the windows box
03:23<ompaul>was 1 hour ago
03:23<ompaul>so you have been faffing on here with lots of codswallop for no good reason
03:23<Shedding>ompaul: don't want do be ignored.. I just didn't want to be seen as a complete idiot

03:25<pparadis>not knowing things is totally okay. sometimes it's good to just state what your original dilemma is in simple terms and ask others for suggestions starting from there.
03:25<ompaul>make a folder on your windows desktop called my-linux save pscp.exe to the desktop then run cmd and the following

07:18<engla>nothing flavor about them
07:18<Calinou><psicobra> is it my imagination or is debian much slower than ubuntu?
07:18<Calinou>what desktop environment? what computer specs (RAM/CPU/GPU),
07:18<Calinou>it's pretty fast for me.
07:18<psicobra>ok.... thats what i was refering to sorry if i wasnt clear enough thanks for correcting me
07:18<Calinou>it boots FASTER than ubuntu for me
07:19<Calinou>I use testing + Xfce personally, 64 bit
07:19<engla>psicobra: "much slower" is too vague to answer. Perceptions can hang on small details even
07:19<psicobra>it's a laptop running gnome p4-m 1.86 ghz 1.5GB ram 32GB sata SSD#
07:19<Calinou>that's quite old :P
07:19<Calinou>psicobra, try Xfce or LXDE, they are lighter alternatives
07:19<engla>psicobra: are you using debian stable?
07:20<psicobra>Calinou, it runs perfectly in ubuntu and kubuntu
07:20<psicobra>engla, yes debian stable
07:20<Calinou>psicobra, proprietary drivers or free drivers?
07:20<psicobra>Calinou, free
07:20<Calinou>> did you use proprietary drivers in ubuntu?
07:20<Calinou>> did you enable desktop effects?
07:20<psicobra>Calinou, yes
07:21<Calinou>^ probably why
07:21-!-qord [] has quit [Quit: Nettalk6 -]
07:21<Calinou>proprietary is often faster, however it doesn't like powersaving most of the time
07:21<psicobra>Calinou, yes had full effects in kubuntu cube wobbly windows everything
07:21<psicobra>Calinou, yes thats one of the problems i had when computer went to sleep screen would not power back up

07:28<Calinou><jm_> nouveau lacks power savings
07:28<Calinou>it has power saving for some GPUs
07:28<Calinou>nouveau = free nvidia drivers
07:28<jm_>Calinou: yes, see above
07:28<psicobra>i see
07:28<Calinou>psicobra has ati not nvidia
07:29<engla>squeeze's kernel is 10 releases behind ubuntu, so there might be gpu or ssd differences there that you actually notice
07:29<psicobra>i really wish some one would work on a free flash player

07:29<psicobra>adobe flash sucks so bad in linux

11:47<SynrG>the advice given at to configure a static IP# is dubious. while i understand some people prefer to use ifupdown, this is not the "GNOME way". furthermore, there exist a class of applications which want to talk to GNOME and learn about its networking that must use NetworkManager. deja-gnu (an easy personal backup package) is in this class. it uses gconf and gvfs to talk to any number of backends ...

11:51<SynrG>so i field the question here: is it reasonable to advise users that to configure their GNOME systems with a static IP, one should merely change to Manual / all users? or do we really need to retain the "use /etc/network/interfaces" advice here (for some arcane reason)?

22:25<legume>right now, I'm just testing out IRC, since I haven't used it before
22:25<nevyn>this channel being quiet is unusual
22:26<legume>I was a little surprised that in a channel of 470 ppl, nobody was saying anything
22:27<haylo>its sort of like a hall of linux gods, you dont really talk unless you have a real question or realization
22:27<haylo>also there is debian-offtopic
22:28<haylo>thats where the party is
22:29<legume>i see
22:29<haylo>do you really ^^
22:31<salamander>I used to have problems with flash plugins. Now I still have problems with flash plugins, but different ones. Debian etch, iceweasel 10.0.5, flashplugin-nonfree, was not working, there was a black rectangle instead of a video in youtube for example. Tired of trying and looking in google, I installed google chrome. Flash works in chrome, but there is a very high cpu usage that make it almost imposible to watch anything, but it work
22:31<salamander>s. So, what I did was "cp /opt/google/chrome/ /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/" and now iceweasel is using the plugin that comes with chrome and it works. Same extrem high cpu usage, but it works. Conclusion, was not working. right?
22:33-!-kbelo [~kbelo@] has joined #debian
22:33<salamander>What I did acutally is "mkdir /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/" then "cp chrome plugin there" then change the plugin name. So iceweasel still see both plugins but I have disabled the one that wasnt working

22:36<kop>salamander: Your plan should begin with upgrading to lenny and then squeeze, or just re-installing. Etch is out of support, as is lenny. Be sure to follow the release notes for the appropriate release when upgrading.

22:37<salamander>kop, mistake, debian squeeze
22:37<abrotman>i get etch and squeeze confused all the time
22:38<salamander>I do too
22:38<kop>salamander: Ok. I don't know flash. There's a <flash> factoid and a wiki page. That's all I know.
22:38<salamander>I used etch for a couple of years so Im used to write debian etch =)

22:39<salamander>kop flash is another word for pain.
22:40<salamander>I was just sharing my very bad and brutal solution. I have been bothering people here for about three days now about flash.
