00:11 | <vook> | flynn_: caps lock flashing signifies kernel panic. Have you checked logs ? Enabled kdump ? |
00:12 | <flynn_> | Don't know about any of that. |
00:12 | <flynn_> | Why is the kernel panicking? Is this a bad kernel neighborhood? |
00:12 | <vook> | flynn_: next time it happens, take not of the time. Once you get it to boot up again, browse through the file /var/log/messages, looking for the time/date when it occurred. |
00:13 | <vook> | You probably have some flakey hardware. |
00:13 | <vook> | not/note |

02:26 | <dpkg> | If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>. |
02:26 | <Shedding> | ohh |
02:26 | <Dr_O_> | my bad... I thought the topic said "just ask.. don't ask to ask"... so go on! |
02:26 | <Shedding> | I have an old computer with debian on it. I want to extract data from it - however, when I use ntfs it only allows read only |

02:27 | <ompaul> | Shedding: eh, to extract data all you need to do is write |
02:27 | <Shedding> | and I get a "couldn't find package ntfs-3g" |
02:27 | <Dr_O_> | doe the computer in question have a network? |
02:27 | <jm_> | please don't use enter key so often |
02:27 | <ompaul> | Shedding: eh, to extract data all you need to do is read actually |
02:27 | <Shedding> | an external hard drive |
02:27 | <Shedding> | yes it does |
02:27 | <Shedding> | dhcp |
02:28 | <Shedding> | I can ping the internet |
02:28 | <ompaul> | !enter |
02:28 | <dpkg> | The enter key is not a substitute for punctuation. Hitting enter unnecessarily makes it difficult to follow what you are saying. Consider using ',', '. ', ';', '...', '---', or ':' instead. If you hit enter too often, you will be autokicked by debhelper for flooding the channel. |
02:28 | <Shedding> | well, no I mean |
02:28 | <Shedding> | I need to extract data from the linux machine to the ntfs hard drive |
02:28 | <Dr_O_> | Well in essance you cannot! |
02:28 | <Shedding> | sorry about that. |
02:28 | <ompaul> | Shedding: you are heading to being ignored, that's a windows problem install pscp.exe on the windows box |
02:29 | <jpinx> | Shedding: the linux machine will need ntfs-3g installed |
02:29 | <Shedding> | yes. I am trying to install the ntfs-3g packages. But it cannot find them. |
02:29 | <ompaul> | just do the simple thing - tar the data on the linux box - and use pscp to copy it to the linux box |
02:29 | <Dr_O_> | does lenny have ntfs-3g?? |
02:29 | <ompaul> | s/linux/windows |
02:29 | <jpinx> | Shedding: then you can sshfs or rsync from linux to wondows |
02:29 | <jm_> | Shedding: what's in your sources.list for lenny? "/msg dpkg paste" if you need to paste several lines |

02:31 | <Shedding> | yes dr.0 |
02:31 | <Shedding> | either that, or copy the data to an external hard drive. |
02:31 | <Shedding> | This machine is really old and the raid is failing. There is a lot of data needed, b ut the data can no longer be accessed through smb |
02:32 | <Shedding> | It used to be a network file server |
02:32 | <ompaul> | Shedding: this problem was solved by my clue, I'll say it again, 1) install pscp.exe on the windows machine 2) copy the data - if there is a lot of it use tar to tar the data 3) take the time saved to upgrade lenny to squeeze and then deal with other issues |
02:32 | <Shedding> | ok ompaul. Let me do a search online on what pscp is. |

07:15 | <psicobra> | hi all this is my first time using debian |
07:16 | <psicobra> | tried lots of flavours of debian but never straight debian before |
07:16 | <Calinou> | hi |
07:16 | <psicobra> | hi |
07:17 | <psicobra> | is it my imagination or is debian much slower than ubuntu? |
07:17 | <engla> | psicobra: debian doesn't have flavors though. |
07:17 | <psicobra> | i.e ubuntu kubuntu etc |
07:17 | <psicobra> | lubuntu |
07:18 | <psicobra> | bhodi |
07:18 | <psicobra> | all debian based |
07:18 | <engla> | they are derived distributions |
07:18 | <engla> | nothing flavor about them |
07:18 | <Calinou> | <psicobra> is it my imagination or is debian much slower than ubuntu? |
07:18 | <Calinou> | what desktop environment? what computer specs (RAM/CPU/GPU), |
07:18 | <Calinou> | it's pretty fast for me. |
07:18 | <psicobra> | ok.... thats what i was refering to sorry if i wasnt clear enough thanks for correcting me |
07:18 | <Calinou> | it boots FASTER than ubuntu for me |
07:19 | <Calinou> | I use testing + Xfce personally, 64 bit |
07:19 | <engla> | psicobra: "much slower" is too vague to answer. Perceptions can hang on small details even |
07:19 | <psicobra> | it's a laptop running gnome p4-m 1.86 ghz 1.5GB ram 32GB sata SSD# |
07:19 | <Calinou> | that's quite old :P |
07:19 | <Calinou> | psicobra, try Xfce or LXDE, they are lighter alternatives |
07:19 | <engla> | psicobra: are you using debian stable? |
07:20 | <psicobra> | Calinou, it runs perfectly in ubuntu and kubuntu |
07:20 | <psicobra> | engla, yes debian stable |
07:20 | <Calinou> | psicobra, proprietary drivers or free drivers? |
07:20 | <psicobra> | Calinou, free |
07:20 | <Calinou> | > did you use proprietary drivers in ubuntu? |
07:20 | <Calinou> | > did you enable desktop effects? |

11:47 | <SynrG> | the advice given at http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager#FAQ to configure a static IP# is dubious. while i understand some people prefer to use ifupdown, this is not the "GNOME way". furthermore, there exist a class of applications which want to talk to GNOME and learn about its networking that must use NetworkManager. deja-gnu (an easy personal backup package) is in this class. it uses gconf and gvfs to talk to any number of backends ... |

22:31 | <salamander> | I used to have problems with flash plugins. Now I still have problems with flash plugins, but different ones. Debian etch, iceweasel 10.0.5, flashplugin-nonfree, was not working, there was a black rectangle instead of a video in youtube for example. Tired of trying and looking in google, I installed google chrome. Flash works in chrome, but there is a very high cpu usage that make it almost imposible to watch anything, but it work |
22:31 | <salamander> | s. So, what I did was "cp /opt/google/chrome/libgcflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so" and now iceweasel is using the plugin that comes with chrome and it works. Same extrem high cpu usage, but it works. Conclusion, libflashplayer.so was not working. right? |
