01:54<Calinou>don't ask to ask

01:56<allen>I got ubuntu 10.04 and 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection for network adapter. Download speed is so slow.I changed DNS ,UFW and disabled IPV6.Still crazy slow.
01:57<allen>downloading the same source under windows is quite OK.
01:58<allen>any same experience?
01:58-!-chgtg [~chg@] has joined #debian
01:59<allen>maybe im not sending the problem to the proper place, but i really have diffculty in connecting to the channel in ubuntu irc server~
02:00<youlysses>allen: This really isn't a channel to for support for anything other distro but ubuntu, for specific questions I'd ask in #ubuntu on freenode.
02:00<dpkg>This is not the Ubuntu help channel. Please do /server and then /join #ubuntu. If you are using XChat, you can right-click the following link and choose connect. irc://
02:00<youlysses>What "ubuntu irc server"?
02:00<allen>i mean irc for ubuntu~
02:00<youlysses>scientes: I need to remember that, it seems like it happens enough. :-P
02:01<scientes>youlysses, thats what freenode is in xchat (there also is a freenode branded freenode too in there, and a debian branded oftc)
02:01<allen>sorry for all of you~ the speed made me want to cut my head off...
02:02<youlysses>scientes: I think I only understood 1/2 of that ... :-L

02:06<scientes>allen, there is another chinese user that has been in our irc for a while
02:06<youlysses>scientes: I'm not in a graphical session currently... hint?
02:06<quentusrex_>Anyone here know why there is a large performance improvement with malloc() when the size being requested is less than 128 bytes? here's a graph of the times:
02:06-!-allen [~allen@] has left #debian [Leaving]
02:07<scientes>quasisane, look at malloc.c in glibc
02:08<scientes>quasisane, basically it doesn't ask the kernel, when it needs to ask the kernel and go through the MMU it is much slower
02:08<youlysses>allen: Oh all GNU based Systems, I've found Debian to have just a stellar community and ecosystem. I might be biased, but I really couldn't reccomend it enough. I don't agree with all the decisons made, but for the most part, it's a very democratic system.
02:08<youlysses>*Of all
02:08<quentusrex_>scientes, where is that size determination set?
02:08-!-Se-bash [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:08<scientes>quasisane, malloc/malloc.c in glibc
02:09<scientes>quasisane, if you want real time app you have to malloc everything beforehand, and then lock pages into ram
02:10<scientes>youlysses, far better than fedora's breaking of ptrace...

02:11<scientes>like nouveau
02:11<youlysses>scientes: Well Fedora might have a psuedo-democratic system, but alot of decisons are pushed by redhat. It's pretty much RHEL's test-bed. :-P

02:12-!-WhilelM [~WhilelM@] has joined #debian
02:12<scientes>IMHO it doesn't really have to do with democracy, it has to do with manpower

02:12<scientes>and RH is willing to pay for manpower in some places that really count

02:13<scientes>quentusrex, check out the small bin stuff in glibc
02:13<scientes>that is what you are seeing
02:13<scientes>it it can internally allocate its much faster
02:13<scientes>quasisane, however IIRC under memory pressure that stuff actually gets deallocated
02:14<youlysses>scientes: I'm not saying their decisons are nesscarily bad, and they really can pay to get something they want done, but I still think the communities between Fedora and Debian are very diffrent. But hey, diversity typically grows inovation. :-P

02:15<scientes>however multi-arch really is a superior system IMHO
02:16-!-ftc [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:17<youlysses>scientes: Well "never" is too strong of a word imo, but yes, you'd be hardpressed to find enough like-minded people to do something, and agree an the implementation enough to "get-it-done", but yes like you mentioned, they did pull of multi-arch rather nicely so... :-)

02:18<scientes>yes indeed that was a strong word. Red hat is pushing ALOT of development however
02:19<quentusrex_>scientes, I just realized I was reading the graph backwards. It's getting around 50 malloc/free loops when greater than 128 bytes, and only around 33 malloc/free loops per millisecond when less than 128 bytes.
02:19-!-clopez [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

02:20<youlysses>scientes: I won't argue with that. Over-all though, I really think they are doing a great-job! They've also helped in-numrable amounts on GNOME3 which I'm thankful for.
02:21<scientes>they are about the only force that is porting large apps to gtk3
02:21<scientes>like all the gtk3 patches in firefox
02:21<youlysses>scientes: Oh wow, very nice. I just knew about the offical suite involment.
02:23<scientes>which is also the most straight-forward way to get firefox on wayland
02:24<scientes>and wayland is really linux's only way to get a unified graphics stack in the future
02:24*youlysses wonders if wayland will make it in "jessie".
02:25<scientes>youlysses, its in wheezy, just not very usable
02:26<scientes>cause X11 is actually quite broken, when it comes to keylogging security for example
02:27<youlysses>scientes: "Usable" as in? My main box currently is just running a (now) graphical emacs. I might just try to try-it-out. :-P
02:27-!-sandeep [~sandeep@] has joined #debian
02:27*youlysses 's dream box by "Jessie's" stable is a Hurd box running a Graphical Emacs powered by Wayland.
02:28<scientes>youlysses, well #1 you need KMS and DRM support for your graphics card #2 gtk-3 doesn't have wayland backend support AFAIK cause there were nasty bugs with nvidia #3 its crashy, buggy, alpha software
02:29<youlysses>scientes: With the proprietarry, or free drivers?
02:29<scientes>so yeah you have to build gtk+3 in order to run emacs
02:30<scientes>youlysses, nvidia doesn't have KMS for example

02:31<youlysses>scientes: I currently only by boxen with intel gpus because you are almost gaurenteed some level of support.

02:37<youlysses>scientes: I'm saying I want a display system, but really I'm not sure if I want it/need it to-be wayland, or anything else "multi-purpose". I've found myself more and more in Emacs, and I've said this in jest a day-or-two ago in #emacs@freenode, but I think It'd be cool to have a DS that is intrenzailzed in Emacs, but renders a complete graphical session. :-P It'd have a REALLY small audience, but stil.
02:38<scientes>well if you are using gtk version
02:38-!-aranax [~aranax@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
02:38<scientes>then bare-bones is either wayland or directfb
02:38<scientes>however gtk for directfb is not maintained anymore, which is causing problems for the debian-installer

03:50<scientes>is your keyoard responsive in a simple program like gedit?
03:50<EmleyMoor>In short, this particular motherboard and/or processor has not lived up to its potential

03:50<scientes>is it a graphic driver problem?

04:25<devil>EmleyMoor: I have the same thing with very high load average at times. it freezes the system for minutes. i think i have it pinned down to iceweasel (or one of the many tabs i have open) it just says, a script is not responding, and i have the choice to stop it if the system is not completely frozen. since 2 versions of iceweasel the problem did not show
04:25<devil>CPU load is minimal, lots of ram free, when that happens
04:26<EmleyMoor>devil: Mine's often like that, but often that's not the reason. I get high load, though spare CPU capacity and spare RAM, from time to time. Besides, a machine with less RAM and 66% less cores is behaving far better, on the same sites!

06:10<ivo888>If i use static settings it is the same
06:11<rswarbrick>Right. Ignore the static settings thing for now - the problem isn't to do with your IP lease; rather it is to do with the nameserver that gets chosen.
06:12<ivo888>? what must i do now?
06:12<ivo888>I install resolvconf

06:12<rswarbrick>That's probably what I'd suggest (since I think I know how that's supposed to work)
06:13<rswarbrick>After doing so, you probably want to add a dns-nameserver line like I suggested earlier underneath your eth0 line.
06:13<rswarbrick>Hopefully, what'll happen is that when you do ifdown eth0; ifup eth0, resolvconf will spot that line and add your custom nameserver to resolv.conf (and of course then it won't get overwritten)

06:40<rswarbrick>Hmm. Ok, I'm not sure exactly what the *right* thing to do here. The problem is as follows: Your router (which isn't connected to the internet) advertises itself as a dns server. dhclient, which talks to it and gets your IP address notices this and gives the nameserver to resolvconf. 10:29<EmleyMoor>How can I set exim to listen on particular interfaces only?
10:29<noobie>Hello people I have a problem whci is maybe not debian-specific but maybe smb would be willing to help. I had a problem with one of my hard disks I mad a fsck on it as a result the disk seems to be repaired, but instead of my files there are now some strange foldes with names like #300789 or smth like this. when I enter such folder there is nothing inside. What would it mean? Can I recover my previous files or are they definitely lost?
10:30-!-babilen [] has joined #debian
10:30<EmleyMoor>noobie: You'd need to check everything that was recovered in lost+found - a lot may be unsalvageable but there may be some that can be used
10:31<EmleyMoor>There might be some empty folders created as a result... but there may also be some that look good.
10:32<noobie><EmleyMoor> - exactly - there is only one folder = lost+found
10:32-!-dirichlet [] has joined #debian
10:32<noobie>and inside it there are about 20 folders with names #300999 etc
10:33<ompaul>EmleyMoor: I see a lot of please edit >>> interface=x.x.x.x in exim conf and restart
10:33<noobie>why do they have # as the first letter of the name?
10:33<EmleyMoor>Yes - that means that fsck thinks it has recovered a folder whose name it did not find...
10:33<EmleyMoor>noobie: Means "number" - often relates to the disk block number it was found at
10:34<ompaul>noobie: before doing much more get another disk and get copying data
10:34<noobie>OK - btw I can not rename such folder : "mv #1 a" does not work
10:35<EmleyMoor>ompaul: There is something "Debian" that needs to be done - it uses something called "MAIN_LOCAL_INTERFACES" or similar and I don't know where that is set
10:35<ompaul>noobie: mv \#1 a
10:36<ompaul>EmleyMoor: that is ugly, I would have taught it just needed service exim restart - you have me curious now
10:36<noobie>ompaul thx it works
10:37<petemc>EmleyMoor: how do you configure exim? do you use debconf? if so, it asks you which interfaces to listen on
10:37<ompaul>EmleyMoor: as petemc said dpkg-reconfigure foo
10:37<petemc>dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
10:38<noobie>EmleyMoor, ompaul, tanks! it seems that I recovered some folders.

11:26<Kagami-Temp>daemonkeeper, do you know if xorg or openbox start a graphical login by default with debian?
11:26<Kagami-Temp>I just installed openbox and xorg and when I boot up I get no picture
11:26<Kagami-Temp>even with nomodeset
11:26<sney_>graphical login is provided by different software, like gdm or kdm or slim
11:26<Kagami-Temp>that's what I mean
11:27<Kagami-Temp>does openbox install one by default?
11:27<sney_>xorg is a display server, openbox is a window manager, neither of them handle logins
11:27<sney_>it sounds like it doesnt'
11:27<Kagami-Temp>yeah, but do xorg or openbox install any by default?
11:27<Kagami-Temp>or xserver-xorg-core
11:27<sney_>it would have to pull it in as a dependency, and when most of those are installed they are enabled by default
11:28<sney_>so it sounds as if you did not get one as a dependency and you will have to install it yourself if you want that behaviour. slim is a good one if you're trying to save on resource usage.
11:28<Kagami-Temp>so you know if xserver-xorg-core pulls in any?

20:46<dpkg>xorg can use files ending in the suffix .conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d for additional configuration. It is preferred to use an <empty xorg.conf> and create files (e.g. 20-nvidia.conf, 20-radeon.conf, 20-wacom.conf) there in order to configure a single device. You might have to create the directory yourself (mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d). See also "man 5 xorg.conf".
