02:51<ThePerfectEnemy>Hi all
02:52<ThePerfectEnemy>Anyone here with .deb package creation experience?
02:53<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on See <smart questions><errors>.
02:55<ThePerfectEnemy>Well, I'm trying to create some packages to manage server configuration
02:56-!-dmz [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:56<ThePerfectEnemy>Ideally I'd be able to run apt-get foo-env and replicate foo's environment on a new machine
02:57<ThePerfectEnemy>but there is some boostrapping involved because I need to add my own repo to sources.list (actually a new file in sources.list.d)
02:58<ThePerfectEnemy>so I have a bootstrap package which I can install via dpkg -i, and then i can install the core package via apt-get
02:58<ThePerfectEnemy>the problem is, after installing the bootstrap package, I still have to run apt-get update to pick up the changes

03:01-!-mauregato [~mauregato@] has quit [Quit: leaving]
03:03<ThePerfectEnemy>if I put this in the postinst script, I get an error because I'm unable to get the lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock
03:03-!-noahfx [] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
03:03<ThePerfectEnemy>presumably because i'm in the middle of a package installation already
03:04<ThePerfectEnemy>Is there a proper way for a package to modify sources.list? Or is there a reason why this is a bad idea to begin with?

11:25<weasel>it's an option that some package builds accept to not strip out debug symbols after building
11:29<mekt>Presuming the symbols would be in a mirror type placement under /usr/lib/debug , there are none for this library.
11:30<dpkg>When building packages, you should be able to use "DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip dpkg-buildpackage" to leave debugging symbols in the binaries. Not all packages have a <debian/rules> that supports this option, but most will since <debhelper> supports this automatically; see <policy> §4.9.1 for details and consider filing a wishlist bug if the package doesn't do so and doesn't already create a -dbg package.

12:44<pparadis>and there are assuredly brute force attacks (i presume you're referring to ssh) happening anyhow. any server that sites live on the net for more than a couple of minutes is prone to such probes. they're automated.

12:44<retrospectacus>dovecot listening indicates "mail server" which ppl try to exploit to send more spam
12:45<pparadis>indeed, botnets will hit common ports and try to abuse mail servers, proxy servers, get root via ssh, etc.
12:46<pparadis>and some botnets are nice enough these days to sit scan 65K ports for the hell of it, simply because "hey, it's not their computing resources being abused, so why not"

12:55<dpkg>[stable] The status of a Debian release when no packages will be added or new versions introduced, and changes will only fix security issues and critical bugs. Packages can be removed in rare circumstances. The current stable version of Debian is Squeeze (6.0); ask me about <releases>. Security bugs are fixed in stable by backporting the fix to the current version (ask me about <security backports>).

13:05<cygal>but /sys/class/drm only contains "ttm" and "version"
13:05<cygal>any idea?
13:06<babilen>cygal: Did you install firmware-linux-nonfree? I am not particularly sure if you need that for power management, but I would at least make sure that you have it. Likewise for libgl1-mesa-dri (3d acceleration), but that is a seperate issue. Trying a newer Xorg and kernel version might also help and could provide the configuration option you are after. See "/msg dpkg bdo kernel" and "/msg dpkg bdo xorg"
13:07<cygal>I did install both indeed
13:07<cygal>and I forgot to mention that I run sid, and have done so for a few years now

13:08<babilen>cygal: I am not entirely sure what provides the configuration option you mentioned and you might want to double-check in #radeon on -- All that being said: It is likely that it boils down to a newer kernel version which you can install from backports.

13:11<babilen>cygal: Alright -- You are welcome in #debian-next in that case (channel for testing/unstable) -- #radeon is most likely worth a try for this issue though and the factoids I mentioned earlier are geared towards users who track stable and not testing or unstable.

18:08<arokux_h>daemonkeeper, my original question was why should a DD upload binary for some arch? (in the case with gcc-4.4 a DD uploaded amd64-binary)
18:09<daemonkeeper>And I told you: Because DDs must do so.
18:09<arokux_h>daemonkeeper, "must" is not an answer :)
18:10<olasd>it is
18:10<olasd>DDs have to upload the binaries for one architecture together with the source, the archive software rejects source-only uploads
18:10<olasd>s/one/at least one/
18:11<daemonkeeper>Although I do not think any DD is bored enough to build more than one arch :>
18:11<engla>what's the reason that this is required?
18:11<arokux_h>olasd, I see. but why are binaries for at least of one arch needed by buildd?

21:04<gotmynick>I use xcompmgr on some desktop (effects, shadows, etc)
21:05<gotmynick>transparency... after some years using it, now I prefer a solid background terminal
21:05<gotmynick>compiz was cool in 2006
21:06<Jzebus>transparency lets me have a terminal up and still read a web page behind it, for example
21:06<gotmynick>if you pass many hours reading terminals, a solid background is really better (for your eyes)
21:06<Jzebus>of course, for work and on my PC it's green on black
21:06<gotmynick>not a issue whit workspaces, 24", many machines/screens, etc
21:07<Jzebus>that's the thing, on my PC where I can afford the overhead I don't need it because I have two screens
21:07<Jzebus>need more screens though

21:11<gotmynick>woden, there aren't
21:11<gotmynick>you can download the weekly installer
21:12<gotmynick>and then upgrade to sid
21:12<gotmynick>there are installer versions that request for the version you want the install

21:12<woden>gotmynick, where are those installer versions?

21:12<Jzebus>I tend to install Sid by installing testing then changin my sources.list and dist-upgrading
