00:00-!-deathstars [~deathstar@] has quit []
00:00<hkb>It hangs around the same place when booted using the recovery mode also
00:01-!-clopez [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:02<hkb>This drive is a ^GBS
00:02<hkb>This drive is a 6GBS
00:02<hkb>Might this cause a problem
00:03<hkb>The CDROM which is a BLUE ray drive also is the last line before hanging sometimes
00:03-!-Danniel-Lara [~daniel@] has joined #debian
00:04<hkb>The difference being the regular boot mode and the recovery
00:04<pparadis>hkb: you might try switching the drive to an alternate SATA controller if you have two.
00:04<hkb>or if I boot with init 3 added
00:05<pparadis>or you might try installing with a kmuto image and then dist-upgrading it to wheezy afterward.
00:05<pparadis>in fact, i think the kmuto route is your best chance at this point.
00:05<pparadis>"This directory provides Debian GNU/Linux Stable installer ISO images with modifications by Kenshi Muto to support newer hardwares, such as SATA contollers and Ethernet devices."
00:06<hkb>It is a relativelly new machine. I tested it with Squeeze on the other drive and seemed to install and work fine.
00:06<pparadis>hkb: if that does work, please be sure to come back here and let us now.
00:07-!-vsayer [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:07<hkb>On the other drive I have windows 8 and just added the 3tera byte drive today.
00:07<pparadis>hkb: yeah, try the kmuto image installing to the drive you're having problems with. i'm betting it's the SATA controller not being supported without additional drivers/firmware.
00:07<hkb>I think I will reintall squeeze and since I do know that did intall and run once before.
00:08<hkb>Then upgrade from there
00:08-!-led_belly [] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
00:08<pparadis>right, but you installed squeeze to a different drive and on a different controller, right?
00:08<pparadis>that's why i'm saying try the kmuto installer iso next.
00:08<hkb>Different drive but it is a 3GBS drive
00:09<hkb>Let me look up the kmuto installer ... I have not used that before.
00:10<hkb>But do note... That Knoppix does boot and I can access the drive ... That is how I am looking at the log feiles.... I am sorta ruling out hardware problem for this reason ... but it could be a driver problem

02:30<abec0>Butt since it is easy as in automatic, maybe this is why Guest2724 thinks it is a hardware issue.

02:31-!-Guest2724 is now known as net
02:31<TiMiDo>damn debian does not like my laptop
02:31<net>i just don't care about names abec0
02:32<net>Sorry Timido try live booting to test out different flavors then
02:32<abec0>TiMiDo: Does ifconfig list both eth0 and wlan0, or one (which one) ?
02:32-!-Blue_Hat [~Blue_Hat@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:32<TiMiDo>no it does not
02:32<TiMiDo>it only shows wlano
02:34<TiMiDo>and wlan0 i cannot get it working
02:34<abec0>Hmmm. Then... Well, I would go with the easy «install network-manager» graphical-but-small thing.
02:34-!-johfel [] has joined #debian
02:35<abec0>Of course, you are sure that the wifi is working (some other computer gets the network with it).
02:35<bones_was_here>ifconfig -a should show eth0
02:35-!-kriller_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:35<abec0>Then install nm (from CD I guess), and run it.
02:35<abec0>That would read something like aptitude install network-manager.
02:36<abec0>TiMiDo: «damn» doesn't seem like good news, but is not very informative. ;-)
02:37<bones_was_here>but if not, you may need to install some firmware for your onboard NIC
02:37<TiMiDo>i cannot do much
02:37<TiMiDo>i'm not using debian right now
02:37<TiMiDo>i'm on windows

02:38<net>makes sense
02:38-!-grepper [] has joined #debian
02:38<net>TiMiDo can you try a VM
02:38<net>the debian package
02:38<abec0>Well, that's the problem with IRC, so synchronous ;-).
02:39<net>maybe you can get something working through that right abec0?
02:39<abec0>A VM wouldn't have any uncompatible ethernet card, for sure, but...
02:40<abec0>... it's not solving anything ;-).
02:40-!-fredric [~fredric@] has joined #debian
02:41<net>well then the next move would be to pull out a second computer to stay on here while you install
02:41<abec0>Plus the OP would have to install the virtualization program, and a distribution on top of it... And we aree only assuming that the windows is on the same machine than the Debian, right ?
02:41-!-fredric [~fredric@] has left #debian []
02:42<abec0>net: I agree. ;-)
02:43-!-dany [] has quit [Quit: Quitte]
02:43<abec0>But we talk, and talk and talk, and TiMiDo doesn't. ;-)
02:43<TiMiDo>i'm just mad
02:43<TiMiDo>on arch everythng works fine
02:44<abec0>That is a good information, I guess, no ?
02:44<abec0>No hardware problem, then, right ?
02:44<net>why are you trying to move to deb then?
02:44<TiMiDo>Because i always have had debian install also
02:44<abec0>net: Why not ?
02:45-!-tensorpudding_ [~michael@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:45<net>abec0: if something is working with everything you want then why mess with it?
02:46<abec0>TiMiDo: Do you confirm that both eth0 and wlan0 are detected on the same machine under some other distro ?

02:47<abec0>net: Curiosity, Undying spirit of Adventure ? ;-)
02:47<TiMiDo>yeah under arch linux
02:47<net>abec0: i mess around plenty. been live-booting for a week now
02:48<abec0>net: And not being able to take «no» for an answer when «it should work».
02:48<bones_was_here>if the cabled LAN works on arch out of box, but in debian is not even visible with ifconfig -a, it probably needs nonfree firmware
02:48<bones_was_here>firmware-linux-nonfree is the package you're after, and run update-initramfs after installing it
02:49<abec0>bones_was_here: So that would mean (OT I'm afraid) that Arch Linux comes with nonfree firmware ?
02:49<bones_was_here>abec0: it does yes
02:50<bones_was_here>from memory, debian will search for and install nonfree firmware if you place the package on the install media (easy when it's a USB stick)
02:50<abec0>bones_was_here: Hmm. Good to know. (anyway what isn't).
02:50<abec0>bones_was_here: Again, good to know ;-)
02:51<bones_was_here>but i guess he wasn't doing a netinstall anyway, since it wouldn't have succeeded without that

06:38<EmleyMoor>movl: I don't but if I did, it would be mutt

06:40<bernat>EmleyMoor: OMG
06:40<Jarwis>themill: The isp were the vps is have to ports closed in both directions. 22 and 443

06:41<dragondon>yeah, figured out my WM issue. Seems that compiz got uninstalled, yet some of the functions were working (*i.e. the 3d cube and some special effects), installed compiz and all is right with the world again...:)
06:41<themill>Jarwis: If your VPS provider is that clueless, I'd be looking to give my money to someone else... But in any case, configure the host in ~/.ssh/config and then you don't need to give port (or username) details to ssh-copy-id at all
06:43<dragondon>thanks for everyone's input! I really do appreciate it!!
06:44<Jarwis>themill: all isp in that country do that sadly and i need a vps there. There is no directory named .ssh on the host (yet). i was hoping if this didnt work that i could just sftp the key up on the server. just not sure where to find it or put it
06:44<themill>Jarwis: you need to configure .ssh/config on your local machine not on the remote machine
06:44<dragondon>babilen, towo^work , thanks. (If I am missing someone, blame it on my stress<G>)
06:45<Jarwis>themill: its configured and i have "" in my user/.ssh directory
06:46<themill>Jarwis: what do you mean by "its configured"? You created an entry in ~/.ssh/config for this host specifying the port?
06:46<Jarwis>nope. sorry i means ssh is installed and key is generated
06:47<dcpc007>bernat: they seem to tell that aptitude has better algorythme, and no inconvenient more than apt...

06:47<dcpc007>+ better recommandations and suggest
06:48<Jarwis>babilen: thats easy its just a file. nano config. but i cannot see why. The copy-id command still wont work on non 22 port.
06:49<babilen>Jarwis: Did you configure the connection in ~/.ssh/config so that you can "ssh host" into the host? (*NO* other options) In particular: Did you specify the host in the configuration file?
06:49<Jarwis>but maybe it can configure the default command just to work on any port without the need for a -p in the command. that would work
06:49<dcpc007>(afk lunch)
06:50<Jarwis>babilen: nope. no idea what to put in that config file.
06:50<babilen>Jarwis: Err, I meant "Did you specify the PORT in the configuration file?" (cf. "man 5 ssh_config" → "Port")

06:52<dragondon>bernat, thanks, makes sense. any idea how to troubleshoot that? Maybe tae a vid of it shutting down I suppose?
06:52<babilen>Jarwis: The file looks something like: and *please* read the manpage.
06:53<bernat>dragondon: try to unmount the volume group manually to get more info
06:53<EmleyMoor>Not sure I can send news with it either...
06:55<Jarwis>babilen: thx those edits looks alot like those in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and not those in /user/.ssh/config, gotta keep those two apart.
06:56<babilen>Jarwis: You surely want to keep those apart as one is global (/etc) and the other is specific to a single user.

06:58<babilen>I still think that themill's approach of configuring the connection in ~/.ssh/config is the better approach than having to specify the options every single time.

19:16<dragondon>greetings all. What's the switch to indicate 'the directory you are in'? As in I want to copy a file from a remote system to the directory I am in without having to type in the explicit path of the local system
19:17<dragondon>i.e. scp username@ip-address:/home/username/Downloads/ "/local" (replace /local"
19:18<retrospectacus>dragondon: .
19:19<dragondon>vook, thanks, now I have to figure out why my ssh server is tiiming out :/
19:20<dragondon>got it :)
19:20<retrospectacus>scp username@host:Downloads/ .
19:20<vook>yes - . is easier
19:21<retrospectacus>and remote relative (to ~username) paths are fine

19:24<retrospectacus>you may also be familiar with .. - the parent of your current location
19:24<retrospectacus>cd ..

19:25<retrospectacus>dragondon: you can see . and .. in "ls -la"
19:25<dragondon>Now to figure out why I am getting a 'permission denied' response to the file....

19:26<retrospectacus>dragondon: permission was denied, either to read the remote file or write the local
19:27<dragondon>retrospectacus, the file is a torrent file, currently seeding via transmission (debian.iso), trying to copy it to another system. I wouldn't think that would be the reason would it?
