01:05<vook>I'm having an issue with wpa_supplicant - I guess I haven't used it in a while. Basically if I just run it as I formerly did, it fails due to the fact that there is always an instance of /sbin/wpa_supplicant running. Even if I killall on wpa_supplicant, it immediately respawns. I haven't researched this too much, but so far if I rename /sbin/wpa_supplicant, then killall on wpa_supplicant, then launch the renamed wpa_supplicant as usual, it works. How should I

But "apt-get apt" says "370 to remove" which is quite a lot. I tried a few other stuff but no solution yet. Any help? Thanks.

03:53<dpkg>Unstable is the status of a Debian release when packages can be added at any time, that can disrupt the integrity of the whole system! Ask me about <break>. If you have to ask whether you should use it or how, you shouldn't. See also <testing>, <sid>, <sid faq>, <apt-listbugs>, <apt-listchanges>, <bts>.
03:53<dpkg>Testing is a continuously updated release between <stable> and <unstable>, currently codenamed <wheezy>. See and ask me about <testing faq> <squeeze->wheezy> <testing security> <moving target> <dda> <apt-listchanges> <apt-listbugs> and <bts>. You should have a sound knowledge of Debian packaging and be prepared for a bumpy ride at times. Don't use it on things that are critical or on servers.

04:01<Garp>bernat: the aptget dist-upgrade failed on an error due to the fact that apt itself was too old
04:02<Garp>Apollo: I commented everything outside of the bare minimal stuff as recommended
04:02<bernat>Garp: you should also uninstall non-official packages as they may interfer

11:05<xorAxAx>ManoftheSea: well, a lot in it is m
11:05<xorAxAx>but that shouldnt make it worse for deb-pkg compared to make-kpkg
11:05<ManoftheSea>oh, make-kpkg gives you a reasonable size?
11:06<ManoftheSea>Well, dissect the package, and see what's got all the space.
11:06<xorAxAx>currently doing so :)
11:06<xorAxAx>/lib/modules/3.5.2/kernel/drivers is 1.2 GB
11:07<xorAxAx>it doesnt strip
11:07<xorAxAx>looks like a bug in 3.5's deb-pkg

16:08<thomaslee_>hey folks ... have been reading a bit about Debian's stance on non-free & I understand it's not considered part of Debian, but I'm surprised we don't see more commercial software in there. I realize there are probably a number of answers to this question, but why is that? Is it actively discouraged by DMs/DDs? Or is it simply that commercial licenses are typically too restrictive wrt redistribution?

16:11<thomaslee_>Really? That's interesting. Something that surprised me was that e.g. you could find nvidia-cg-dev in non-free, but not nvidia drivers. Or Dropbox integration for Nautilus, but not the main Dropbox package.

20:50<pepper>hey I've got a simple debian installation question:
20:50<pepper>I'm running squeeze, and I have testing and unstable repos added to my sources.list file
20:51<pepper>but I need to upgrade imagemagick, and the newest version listed in aptitude is not new enough
20:51<pepper>imagemagick has a lot of dependencies, so I'm sort of wary of installing it from source...
20:51-!-Jzebus [] has quit [Quit: What's that red dot doing on my ch]
20:51<pepper>is there an easy way to force it to upgrade?
20:51<sney_>if you mixed stable, testing, and unstable then you've already broken your system so you may as well go ahead
20:51<SynrG>first, mixing stable + testing/unstable is not a supported configuration
20:52-!-byonk [] has joined #debian
20:52<SynrG>but what may have saved you is you say the newest version in aptitude is not "new enough" (presumably you were expecting a higher version from testing or unstable and it's not shown?)
20:52<SynrG>which may mean you have not yet done an aptitude update
20:53<SynrG>,versions imagemagick
20:53<judd>Package: imagemagick on i386 -- lenny-security: 7:; lenny: 7:; squeeze: 8:; squeeze-security: 8:; sid: 8:; wheezy: 8:

20:54<pepper>I'm not sure what backport is

20:55<pepper>and yeah I need to install the sid or wheezy versions
20:55<pepper>and I guess because there is no backport, aptitude is not listing this as an option...even though I have testing in the sources.list

20:56<pepper>alright thanks, I'll try it again
20:56<pepper>you guys are awesome, thanks
20:56<SynrG>but in any case, this is not a supported thing, mixing stable and testing/unstable
20:57<SynrG>if you pull in imagemagick it will likely pull in all sorts of dependencies ...
20:57<scientes_>just download the source, and rebuild for stable
20:57<SynrG>and then you no longer have a stable system, but some half-upgraded to testing/unstable system
20:58<SynrG>scientes_: see 6 minutes ago:
20:58<SynrG>21:51 < pepper> imagemagick has a lot of dependencies, so I'm sort of wary of installing it from source...
20:58*scientes_ places palm on face
20:59<pepper>also many programs depend on imagemagick so I think my whole system would just go crazy
20:59<SynrG>i imagine quite a number of things it depends on must be newer than what's in stable
20:59<SynrG>which could be why nobody backported it
