02:33<gpm_>perlwizard: the problem is my device works fine
02:33<gpm_>but the mac address changes every reboot
02:33<gpm_>it should not change
02:33<gpm_>at all, iirc
02:34<gpm_>so my suspicion is that the system is rejecting the hardware-supplied mac and generating its own every time
02:34-!-wetoded [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
02:35<devil_>gpm_: you could fix that in an udev rule
02:36-!-foolano [] has joined #debian
02:36<gpm_>devil_: which one assigns mac addresses? i found one that assigns interfaces
02:36<gpm_>like i was able to stop generating new wlan*s
02:36<gpm_>(it was up to like wlan13)
02:37<devil_>well, first you could try if adding : hwaddress ether <your mac> does the job. that would be way easier
02:37-!-CookAnEgg [] has joined #debian
02:37<devil_>adding that to e/n/i
02:38<gpm_>it doesn't because every reboot a new mac is generated
02:39<gpm_>what i'm wondering is how does the system figure out what a device's mac address is?
02:40<devil_>gpm_: you can try in interfaces: pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 hw ether <your mac>
02:41<gpm_>should i just use the most recently generated mac address?
02:41<gpm_>because i have a list of like 9
02:41<gpm_>that the system has created
02:41<gpm_>over the course of 9 reboots
02:42<devil_>gpm_: use the onethe device owns
02:42-!-nicelyToasted [~neil@] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
02:42<gpm_>i don't even know how to find that though
02:43<devil_>well, i guesas it does not really matter
02:43<gpm_>i'm looking into ifconfig hw
02:43<gpm_>seems promising

I have found a command that does what I want with a exception: echo $string | convert -antialias -background yellow -page 1024x70 text:- 1.jpg The problem is that instead of 1024x70 I want to have $widthx$height, but that doesn't seem to work. 11:13<EmleyMoor>Not entirely clear, unless the iso will work, how to incorporate this into my stick
11:14<safinaskar>EmleyMoor: this is hybrid iso. you can "dd" it to usb
11:14<safinaskar>EmleyMoor: also you can create your own hybrid iso using debian "live-helper" tool

11:16<Maulkin>bill: ask Ubuntu.
11:16<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

20:56<RedLance>So, I've read that you can make a FreeNAS box out of an old Pentium II PC. How well will such a setup handle an above board SATA controller? I'm not really worried about bandwidth, as I'm limited by my 768k upload speed on my DSL.

21:00<bones_was_here>well freenas is not debian, but i would commment that pentium 2 PC's draw about 100x too much power to make sense doing anything with these days
21:00<abrotman>but if he already has the box ...
21:01<bones_was_here>he'll still spend more powering it than it would cost to buy an op shop laptop with 10x the specs and 10W power draw
21:02<Jb_boin>well, you can find pentium4 and such hardware for free nowadays (and with sata ports on the MB), using a p2 is possible but wouldnt be optimal in many ways
21:02-!-Alam_Squeeze [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:03<RedLance>Yeah, I thought about the power draw. I wanted to get a DLink DNS-323, but can't afford it and I already have the PII and the SATA card.
21:03<bones_was_here>hell, a ras pi is faster and runs on about 1W, and you can buy a new one every year for less than the cost of the pentium's power bill
