00:04<zeptis>noob question: what does /etc/issue.distrib do?
00:04<zeptis>hi Isaac_.
00:05<isaac_>This is my first time to use XChat
00:05<zeptis>welcome dude
00:05<sney>!irc primer

00:05<zeptis>sney_: is issue.distrib just a file to say which distribution you're using?
00:06-!-isaac_ [~isaac@] has left #debian []
00:06<sney>my wheezy machine doesn't have issue.distrib, though it does have issue, and that's what issue does
00:06<zeptis>okay, not important except for making a screenfetch
00:07<zeptis>>>/etc/issue.distrib 1969-12-31
00:07<Jb_boin>well, never saw that file
00:07<Jb_boin>there is normally issue and from package base-files if i am right

00:14<zeptis>I don't mean to keep bugging everyone, but is there a specific reason for the iceweasel fork, or just the Debian philosophy of security and stability at work?
00:15-!-grepper [] has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat]
00:16<sney>!why iceweasel
00:16<dpkg>Due to Mozilla logos licensing, Mozilla software isn't DFSG-free, so Debian distributes Mozilla software with different logos. One day Mozilla Corporation decided to revoke the agreement to let Debian use Mozilla trademarks, so Debian changed to non-trademarked product names. See for more information. Ask me about <dfsg>.
00:16-!-hando [] has joined #debian
00:16<sney>it's not a fork, it's just a rebrand
00:16<zeptis>okay then
00:17<zeptis>I don't suppose there's an aurora or nightly iceweasel, then?
00:17<sney>well, there are the builds at, but not nightly I don't think

01:18<zeptis>it's not a problem, Dizzy. You're trying your best to help your neighbour, and that's what matters, no?
01:18<dizzylizzy>I s'pose :P
01:19<dizzylizzy>when my last computer died I made sure to get one with a graphics card very well supported with free-software drivers

06:10<babilen>johnoo: You'll get an (incomplete) Gnome installation from CD1 as the entire desktop doesn't fit on one CD. I therefore wouldn't recommend to use it as you can just use the netinstall if you have internet access or because you need DVD1 if you want everything. See "/msg dpkg install gnome" and "/msg dpkg install x" for information on how to install Gnome after the initial installation.

06:17<babilen>johnoo: You can use your wifi if it is unencrypted or encrypted with WEP. If your WIFI is encrypted with, say, WPA(2) you need a newer installer which you can get from kmuto (/msg dpkg kmuto) for squeeze. Yet another possibility would be to use the wheezy beta installer, but read "/msg dpkg wheezy" and

06:19<babilen>johnoo: If you want to install from a removable medium I would either recommend to use DVD1 for Gnome or the XFCE/LXDE CD1 if you would rather like to use those. See also "/msg dpkg various cd1" for a short overview of the different CD1 images offered by Debian.
06:19<johnoo>hmm i would use stable squeeze
06:20-!-mode/#debian [+l 503] by debhelper
06:20<babilen>johnoo: Yeah, in that case you either need to use the kmuto installer, which will also get you a new kernel or install from CD1/DVD1. If you go with kmuto don't forget to install a backported kernel as detailed in "/msg dpkg bdo kernel". What kind of hardware are you installing on?

06:24<babilen>johnoo: The 2.6.32 kernel that comes with squeeze should be fine in that case, but a newer won't hurt. I would either recommend to connect your laptop via ethernet for the initial install, to use DVD1 or the kmuto installer.
