01:13<marc_>hello everyone
01:13<marc_>i need some help
01:14<XReaper>hopefully sometime next year i'll be running a shiny new wheezy install :)
01:14<XReaper>marc_: ask your question
01:14<jeep>jm_: my kernel issue is my wifi card works fine running from the dvd doing the install .. but the kernel that gets installed to boot from its not.
01:15<marc_>i want to play some shoutcast. Im running Ubuntu 12.04
01:15<jm_>jeep: which card?
01:15<XReaper>You can try #ubuntu on freenode if you want more specific support for that OS
01:16<marc_>Well im running rhythym box and have the shoutcast plugin but it doesnt install
01:16<jeep>jm_: its atheros ar5b125 works fine after building a kernel
01:16<marc_>maybe amarok?
01:16<marc_>oh well
01:18<XReaper>missing a player?
01:18<jm_>jeep: which driver does that use? debian's wifi page doesn't list anything with such a name

01:29-!-Losowski [~Galicja@] has joined #debian
01:30<jm_>jeep: perhaps check if it's a known issue, here's a link to its bugs list
01:31<gsimmons>jeep: Depending on the software selected for installation, you might have encountered Debian bug #682608 (known wheezy installer beta 2 issue).
01:32-!-alephnull [~alok@] has joined #debian
01:35<jeep>ill boot it in a minute see if i can manually load ath9k
01:36<jeep>gsimmons: yeah same symptom butinstead of reinstall i built a kernel which fixed it
01:37<jm_>it's strange if a different kernel would solve that issue
01:37<gsimmons>jeep: That shouldn't have been necessary, as the suggested workaround is to comment lines relating to wlan0 in /etc/network/interfaces.

08:08<kelkoobenoitr>does some have some numbers or figures regarding NFS performance on debian squeeze ?
08:08<kelkoobenoitr>let's say i have this kind of machines:
08:09<kelkoobenoitr>raid5 lvm ext4 with local write speed about 1.4GB/s for files of 1M
08:09<kelkoobenoitr>machines are connected on private 10G link
08:09<nevyn>so that seems ... notbad.
08:10<kelkoobenoitr>the max i can get to transfer files of 1M is about 200MB/s for 1 client
08:10<kelkoobenoitr>via NFS3 or 4
08:10<nevyn>kelkoobenoitr: how much io subsystem tuning did you do?
08:10<nevyn>how many disks?
08:10<nevyn>how much attention did you pay to issues like stride aligning the lvm/filesystem blocks
08:11<kelkoobenoitr>not much as local write speed for the same test is over 1GB/s
08:11-!-ricardo [] has left #debian [Saliendo]
08:11<kelkoobenoitr>so i expect that via NFS it should be more than 200MB/s
08:12<nevyn>tcp/ip tuning?
08:12<jm_>how good is pure network speed without i/o?
08:12<kelkoobenoitr>iperf or dd over netcat goes up to 900MB/s
08:13<kelkoobenoitr>my conclusion is that NFS protocol is the bottleneck (with 1 client) but i wanted to know if someone had the same figures here
08:13<jm_>can't say as we're on 100mbps network here :)
08:13<nevyn>kelkoobenoitr: jumboframes?
08:14<kelkoobenoitr>and yes i tries ip/tcp tuning
08:14<kelkoobenoitr>yep mtu=9000

10:37<sidmann>so, the advice is to use SuperGrub Disk?
10:37<SynrG>the good news is, if you spot a problem, you can edit the wiki to improve it. if everyone takes it upon themselves to do this when they spot problems, nobody will have to throw 20 hours at it ...
10:37<SynrG>if you just wait for "someone" to fix it, nobody will.
10:38<sidmann>my point is, I had a grub2 problem a while back and I could not find a very good 'how-to' for recovery/repair in debian

20:23<Nathan2055>Okay, a few noob questions about updating. I know I can update with security updates just by adding the repository and running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, but do backports work like that too?
20:24<Nathan2055>Or do I have to manually get each package through backports?
20:24<Nathan2055>Secondly, are security updates pushed through backports too, or just security?
20:27-!-wilk [] has joined #debian
20:27<dondelelcaro>Nathan2055: backports often get security updates, but they tend to have to make it to testing first

20:27<dondelelcaro>Nathan2055: backports is basically a best-effort thing
20:28<Nathan2055>So if I add backports and security and download a package from backports, security updates will not be applied to it?
