02:37<simonlnu>well, there is no "debian server", just a computer that happens to be a server, debian is debian. it's not like ubuntu at all.
02:39<simonlnu>you install what you need, and that's it. there's something called tasksel to help with that
02:39<dpkg>tasksel is a program to select and install "tasks": a collection of packages for a system to perform a specific task (e.g. desktop environment, web server). Ask me about <standard task>, <server tasks> and <laptop task>.
02:40<simonlnu>as for being "stronger", i suspect that's a wrong choice of words and concept. that's more dependent on your hardware, i think ;).
02:41<simonlnu>and how you tweak it, and the software (configuration optimisation, etc.)
02:42<jack>yeah , i know how to use it . thank u , let me have a try !

05:46<VlanXZ>Patagonicus; yeah, basically i have to compare the ip address that i can find on a text file (the config of my router) and then i need to check if the DNS resolution for an hostname matches that IP
05:46-!-edog [~edog@] has joined #debian
05:46<VlanXZ>Sounds simple but i'm a noob to bash
05:48<Patagonicus>VlanXZ: Hmm, ok, three steps then: extract IP from text file, extract IP vom dns resolution and compare them. I'd make a function for the first two and stuff them in an "if". Does the text file only contain the ip or is there more in it?
05:49<VlanXZ>Patagonicus: unfortunately there's more since i cannot have my router to tell me less info

06:52<feam>SynrG: debian better than archlinus ?
06:53<SynrG>i can't imagine you could get an objective opinion on that here. just tell us what you're looking for and maybe we can help
06:53<diederik>what answer do you expect on a _debian_ channel? ;)
06:54<babilen>Debian is clearly better
06:54<SynrG>without a doubt
06:54<heikkila>much better
06:54<SynrG>in all ways
06:55<babilen>!tell feam -about why debian
06:55<babilen>feam: Try both and stay with whatever you like best. I've picked Debian some time ago and really don't regret my choice at all.
06:56<feam>babilen: you tried arch too ?
06:56<feam>babilen: whys it better?
06:56<SynrG>why don't you try both and find out?
06:57<feam>but how do i find which is better?
06:57<SynrG>i think the factoid babilen just had dpkg bot send you covers debian's strengths
06:57<feam>isn't it better to ask the experts?
06:57<babilen>feam: What we are trying to say: It is impossible to say which one is better as you have to decide that yourself and we don't know what is important for you. All I can say is: Debian is an excellent choice
06:58<SynrG>feam: experts at what? at choosing distributions? i consider myself an expert at developing and using debian, period. this leaves me little time for anything else.
06:58<feam>babilen: but debian is hard when it comes to _modifying_ software and compiling ? apt-get gets confused ?
06:58<SynrG>feam: i have never found a compelling reason to leave debian since i started using it around 1995
06:59<SynrG>feam: only if you fight against the packaging system instead of working with it.
06:59<feam>SynrG: last time i used debian was in 2010 or so, when it was Debian 5

07:00<babilen>feam: Try Debian and ask if you have a *specific* problem. Debian certainly doesn't make it hard, but there is IMHO no reason to compile everything. Arch is, however, a much thinner veneer over whatever upstream ships.
07:01<babilen>!tell feam -about stable
07:01<babilen>feam: stable == not changing
07:01<SynrG>feam: and no, "because it uses an old kernel" has nothing to do with it. again, the factoid babilen sent explains it better.

07:03<SynrG>it is pretty hard at a two year remove to assess what went wrong there. all i can say is, we're a fairly responsive, helpful bunch. if and when you do run into issues, debian's support is excellent.

07:08<SynrG>i like the radical commitment to freedom, yet the allowance for non-free when there's absolutely no alternative. i like the generalness of the OS, not being wholly desktop-centric. i like that debian gives you tons of choies.

16:46<Schuyler>seriously, if I said I was running on Debian, would you offer suggestions then?
16:46<Schuyler>or are you guys just being dicks?
16:46<waldo22>Schuyler, I AM running debian, and I just got told to RTFM. I'm out
16:47<retrospectacus>Schuyler: yes
16:47<kop>waldo22: Your old password expired because your clock was wrong. So, expired.
16:47<Schuyler>retrospectacus: do you actually know anything about pbuilder?
16:47<retrospectacus>me? no, why?
16:47<Schuyler>ok, so you are just being a dick. just wondering.
16:48<retrospectacus>I am? what did I say?
16:48<Schuyler>thanks for nothing, guys. sorry to waste your time. and mine.

16:48<kop>Schuyler: No. We're here to support debian. Not to help anybody who happens to come along.
16:48<waldo22>Thanks kop, I figured that, but I wasn't aware that my password was set to expire.
16:48<ompaul>,versions pbuilder
16:48<judd>Package: pbuilder on i386 -- lenny: 0.181; squeeze: 0.199+nmu1squeeze1; squeeze-backports: 0.210~bpo60+1; wheezy: 0.211; sid: 0.212
16:48<kop>waldo22: I've no clue about that. But it can be.
16:48<waldo22>All I was trying to do was su to root so I could update the f(&(&ing clock, it asked me to change the password, so I did, and now it doesn't work
16:49<ompaul>waldo22: so reset it as per Nemoder's link and then lets look at the clock
16:49<waldo22>I can't log in as a user, I can't log in as root, and we're open for business, so now I have to dig up a copy of the CD
16:49<waldo22>I went into the BIOS and reset the clock
16:49<ompaul>just so you have the link

22:48<buddha>laz, hiya
22:49<laz>Could someone supply a link to documentation detailing the install and setup of Nvidia drivers? My crappy monitor doesn't work right with any FOSS drivers :(
22:51<laz>The FOSS drivers always leave at least an inch wide border of black around the viewable screen
22:51<buddha>laz, this helped me.

23:04<buddha>laz, After years of Debian everything is strange to me. I was used to gnome, but I've begun using OPENBOX and it's like learning all over again.
23:06<laz>Yeah, I am an LXDE fanboy (at least for this month) and was a KDE user before they made KDE4 into bloatware
