07:48 | <grammoboy> | hm ok, so I need to find out how to setup raid via the console |
07:49 | <grammoboy> | first about partitioning, so you create one raid partition for every debian partition, eg one for / one for /home one for swap? |
07:49 | <grammoboy> | *so = do |
07:50 | <shweppsie> | grammoboy: I wouldn't. I'd make one large partition. And then set up LVM on top of that. LVM allows you to create virtual partitions inside the one big raid partition. |
07:51 | * | grammoboy googles LVM |
07:51 | <shweppsie> | If you don't want something inside the raid 1 then you'll need to put that in a separate partitions. Say swap for example. |

15:48 | <peterS> | grammoboy: to create a raid1 array as degraded, use 'mdadm --create ... /dev/sdb1 missing' where you say 'missing' in place of the second RAID partition that you want it to use. Presumably you do this on a system where /dev/sda is your old 500 GB disk and /dev/sdb is one of your new 1000 GB disks, partitioned such that sdb1 is the raid partition |
15:49 | <peterS> | the ... is the other arguments to mdadm that I am too lazy to look up for you, so you get to look them up yourself |

16:49 | <peterS> | then reboot. it will be _unable_ to boot from the 1T disk and hopefully, if it's smart enough to try to boot the secondary disk at all, it's also smart enough to boot the primary disk when the secondary disk has no OS on it |

17:51 | <Patagonicus> | Oh, GPT. Yeah, those are nasty, as theres a backup of the GPT table at the end of the disk. |
17:52 | <peterS> | Patagonicus: huh, there is? I wonder how that works out, given we routinely, in my day job, expand the disk available to a VM, without repartitioning, just reboot the system and lo and behold there's a 16 TB disk instead of an 8 TB disk |
17:52 | <peterS> | (you can then expand partitions or create new ones, in the VM) |
17:54 | <Patagonicus> | I think the position can be choosen freely by the partitioning tool, the end of the disk is just a common place. Or maybe it updates the backup when you change the table after resizing. |
17:54 | <peterS> | could be. whatever the system, it works very smoothly - just 'truncate -s 60T' on the host side and reboot the guest and voila |

23:22 | <laurk> | Yeah I did that |

23:23 | <laurk> | Yeah |
23:23 | <laurk> | Studied it very closely too |
23:23 | <thinkerweb> | sounds like you made a bad config file, do you know how to manage you hard disk, are mapping correctly? |
23:24 | <laurk> | Well. lilo didn't recognize the first drive during installation |
23:24 | <thinkerweb> | I'm not to familiar at the moment, but you gotta map it like, Vista-> /dev/sda1 and Debian -> /dev/sda1 or something like that |
23:24 | <laurk> | Grub only recognized the first drive but i didnt want MBR on it |
23:24 | <laurk> | Yeah I did that |
23:25 | <thinkerweb> | well, maybe someone else around here will help you soon, I am not too familiar, but if you provide more details and maybe post you config on pastebin, some of the more brighter ppl around here will respond |

23:26 | -!- | calisto [~calisto@r186-49-7-27.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |
23:27 | <thinkerweb> | I always use grub and install on mbr, I mean why bother, and who cares about mbr, if you wanna get rid of linux in future and revert back to just windows, you can just boot you windows cd and go to restore option and enter the command: fixmbr and it will be like linux was never there |
23:28 | <thinkerweb> | you're not going to ruin anything by editing mbr, its just a filespace for read/write like any other |
23:30 | <thinkerweb> | I have debian installed on my whole drive, and then windows xp on a virtual host, this way I don't have to reboot to go into windows, I can just use windows inside debian, but I never use windows for anything. I mean these days, all I use are Chrome to watch videos online |
23:30 | <laurk> | I do this because I have experience with Vista "fixing" MBR w/o my permission during updates |
23:31 | <laurk> | So I learned not to install it in Vista partition |
23:31 | <laurk> | It will work for now but later I'll be fixing MBR over and over |
23:32 | <thinkerweb> | mbr is on the disk, vista can use it or debian can use, there is no disadvantage to getting rid of windows booter and using linux's |
23:32 | -!- | noahfx [~noahfx@190.148.232.193] has joined #debian |
23:33 | <laurk> | Well that's what I'm trying to do |
23:33 | <thinkerweb> | there is a way to point windows booter to grub/lilo but why run two booters, since grub/lilo can boot both, just use them and get rid of windows booter altogether, and anyways, windows booter is easy to restore anyways, so there is no worries if you decide to stop using linux |
23:33 | <laurk> | I want the Linux drive to have the control |
23:34 | <thinkerweb> | if you aren't installing lilo on mbr then you have to find a way for you windows booter to load up lilo off the harddisk, should be easy, thats the step you are missing then |
23:36 | <laurk> | Lilo didn't recognize hda |
