11:11<althaser>babilen if I manually add nameserver DNSSERVER on /etc/resolv.conf it works fine, my problem is when I do a reboot that supersed my config :P because it says on /etc/resolv.conf that is generated by network-manager
11:12<babilen>althaser: Yes, that is why you have to configure network-manager *explicitly* to use a pre-defined nameserver (edit connections ...) -- Editing /etc/resolv.conf won't work and *will* be overridden (that is mentioned in the file as well)

13:59<birch>I have debian squeeze with a 3.2.* backport kernel installed on an acer netbook. There's a windows 7 install on another partition that I forgot the password to. I need to be able to crack the password to get in, but stuff like ophrack and backtrack are still kernel 2.6.* which doesn't support my video. Is there a way to mount the partition and crack it from the debian install on the netbook? Thanks.

14:00<perlwiza1d>why do you need to crack it
14:00<perlwiza1d>if you can mount the partition from linux and take the files
14:00<Calinou>birch: it's easy to crack a password without even using backtrack..
14:00<Calinou>what perlwiza1d said
14:00<birch>and take what files?
14:00<Calinou>use your google-fu
14:00<perlwiza1d>or mount partition and overwrite the password file with known plaintext file
14:00<kwork>why crack it when you can reset it ?
14:00<Calinou>reset CD *laugh*
14:01<Calinou>as long as you have physical access to a computer, no matter what the OS is installed on you have admin/root password
14:01<sney>password reset is not useful if there's filesystem encryption
14:01<birch>windows has the option to reset the password with a password reset cd, but you have to create the cd before you lose the password...not after :-\

14:06<birch>perlwiza1d, yeah i saw that and have emailed work to see if it'll work without changing any of the server settings but I thought I would try to crack the windows password in the meantime.
14:06<perlwiza1d>birch why crack
14:06<perlwiza1d>if you desperately need that password, you can change it
14:06<birch>perlwiza1d, how?
14:07<perlwiza1d>birch apt-get install ntfs-3g chntpw

14:10<perlwiza1d>birch you only need to edit some files (using whatever text editor) then edit /etc/network/interfaces

22:39<Scriptonaut>Hey guys, I'm trying to install debian amd64 on my pentium 4 machine, however it says that my cpu is an i686 cpu. I thought amd64 supported 32 bit? What the hell is i686 and where would I find an image for it?
22:40<abrotman>Scriptonaut: i386
22:40<abrotman>not all P4 are 64bit
22:40<SamB_MacG5>Scriptonaut: hehehe
22:40<Scriptonaut>Only some of them? That's weird
22:40<SamB_MacG5>my PII is also an i686 ;-P
22:40<Scriptonaut>Why does it say i686? I've only ever heard of i386
22:40<SamB_MacG5>I think even PPro are
22:41<abrotman>i386 is a generic term
22:41<SamB_MacG5>Pentium is i586
22:41<Scriptonaut>Ah, alright, thanks guys
22:41<Scriptonaut>Sam, you have an p2? Isn't that a slot processor?
22:41<abrotman>not all of them
22:41<SamB_MacG5>mine seems to be on a board ...
22:41<SamB_MacG5>which does, indeed, sit in a slot
22:42<abrotman>this is a question for wikipedia
22:42<Scriptonaut>Just making conversation
22:43<SamB_MacG5>anyway, it just implies that certain additional instructions are supported, and has some implications about instruction scheduling ...
22:44<Scriptonaut>whoa, abrotman, you're from WA?
22:44<SamB_MacG5>(i.e., that there is some ;-P)

22:48<abrotman>Scriptonaut: there is another one or two abrotmans on the internets
22:50<Scriptonaut>I googled your name, saw a picture of you(adam brotman), and you had a bunch of pictures from around where I live. Maybe it was somebody else
22:50<Scriptonaut>You've never been to WA?
22:50<abrotman>Scriptonaut: nope
22:51<abrotman>my name isn't Adam
22:51<abrotman>and, this is pretty offtopic at this point
22:51<Scriptonaut>who cares?
22:51<abrotman>i do ...
22:51<Scriptonaut>It's not like there's a lot of other conversations going on
22:51<abrotman>that's not the point
22:52<abrotman>Scriptonaut: try #debian-offtopic if you want friendly chit-chat .. This channel is for support
22:52<Scriptonaut>I'm just saying, if nobody else is submitting questions/text, it really doesn't make a difference
22:52<abrotman>yes, it does
22:52<Scriptonaut>how so?
22:52<abrotman>it's not up for discussion
22:53<Scriptonaut>Well, I'm not going to just take your word for it if you won't supply some kind of compelling evidence
22:53<abrotman>okay, good luck
22:53<Scriptonaut>nobody is posting anything
22:53<Scriptonaut>anything that happens until somebody does post something, has zero effect
22:53<abrotman>you've been told about #debian-offtopic, and should use that for chit-chat
22:53<abrotman>that's your warning
22:54<Scriptonaut>how can you warn me, haha
