01:09<Kinch_larptarp>so... I have a USB wifi card firmware
01:09<Kinch_larptarp>now looking at it on the disk... but no clue on how to install
01:09<Kinch_larptarp>tis a .deb file

01:11<Kinch_larptarp>no. help me first damnit :p
01:11<too>a cd will be in /media/ what ever the name of the cd is

01:18<Kinch_larptarp>heh makes enough sense

01:19<Golfgeo>lul does mean penis in Dutch though
01:20<Kinch_larptarp>haha I'll have to be careful with my use of it then
01:20<Golfgeo>idd haha
01:20<Kinch_larptarp>so I now have the driver installed and such
01:21<Kinch_larptarp>but no clue how to set up DHCP WPA ect
01:21<Golfgeo>oke, do you have a graphical interfase on the computer/laptop?
01:21<Kinch_larptarp>eh, no
01:22<Kinch_larptarp>bare install
01:22<Kinch_larptarp>can't get GUI until network is set up
01:22<Golfgeo>havn't done in on the command line in a long time...
01:22<Kinch_larptarp>remember any of it?
01:22<Golfgeo>wlan0 should be your interface
01:23<Kinch_larptarp>even if the card is usb, correct?
01:23<Golfgeo>but... you have to setup the BSS, channel and such before you can define the wlan0 in /etc/network/interfaces
01:23<Kinch_larptarp>oh glob
01:24<Golfgeo>then you should link it to udev for auto up on insertion...
01:24<Kinch_larptarp>jesus, this is way more in depth than I though
01:24<Golfgeo>You have to take a look at the page and use google for this one...\
01:24<Kinch_larptarp>yeah, I will
01:25<Golfgeo>Yea, beter reinstall with a full ISO download, use the gui to get wifi up and running and then update and upgrade the fresh install...
01:26<Golfgeo>I say this since doing it on the command line might not be 100% compatible with the gui interfase version of it...
01:26<Kinch_larptarp>is there a wheezy iso?
01:26<Golfgeo>thats why I haven't had to do it... wifi on a server isn't all that commen...
01:27<Golfgeo>I call them stable and testing haha
01:27<Golfgeo>don't know what version weezy is haha
01:27<Kinch_larptarp>haha testing
01:27<Golfgeo>Then yes, there should be a fresh nightly build availible on the website
01:28<Kinch_larptarp>and how exactly would I get the wifi config from the iso to the fresh install? the wlan0 file?
01:29-!-Peyton [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:29<Golfgeo>no no... you should reinstall the computer...
01:29<Golfgeo>with the grapical interfase and all
01:30<Golfgeo>then use the GUI to configure your wifi interface for network/internet access....
01:30-!-se7en1 [] has joined #debian
01:30-!-josefig [~josefig@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:31<Kinch_larptarp>so no bare install involved? :(
01:31<Golfgeo>depends on the options you select...
01:32<Golfgeo>but combining wifi with a GUI... best thing is to use the GUI interfaces for highly dynamicly configurable things like wifi
01:32-!-magnetophon1 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:32<Kinch_larptarp>so I could just run the GUI to set up the network stuff
01:33<Kinch_larptarp>and then uninstall the gui and put xfce on it?
01:33<Golfgeo>I believe you can install xfce as default GUI...
01:33<Golfgeo>But why not go to xubuntu????
01:33<Kinch_larptarp>already on it actually
01:34<Golfgeo>using it at this PC right now, and it is debian based....
01:34<Kinch_larptarp>was wanting to switch to plain old debian
01:34<Kinch_larptarp>and do bare install and go from there
01:35<Kinch_larptarp>but alas, I'll just give up and do a live CD thing
01:35<Golfgeo>it's a lot of hasstle to get everything running just right...
01:35<Golfgeo>that's why I use xubunutu or lubuntu when a GUI is needed
01:35<Golfgeo>just don't have the time to spare...

01:46<Kinch_larptarp>compiling is a pain, isn't it?
01:48<Golfgeo>well, no...
01:48<Golfgeo>uh... It can be haha
01:49<Golfgeo>get precompiled archives if you can, saves a load of hasstle...
01:49<sney>if you are considering compiling xfce from source it'll definitely be a pain. there are many easier ways to get it on an offline installation
01:49<Golfgeo>uh... get .deb's! hahha
01:49<sney>for instance, apt-cdrom
01:50<Golfgeo>idd hahaha
01:50<sney>Golfgeo, since this is a support channel, please try to control your comments that aren't support
01:51<Golfgeo>since I'm an IT profession I have the ethics to give proper support
01:51<Golfgeo>but me is off reading some news again :)
01:52<sney>yes, because IT professionals are a rare sight in #debian. Look, if you want to help this guy then help him, but if all you're going to input is a lot of well haha yeah uh haha then maybe you should go to #debian-offtopic
01:52<Kinch_larptarp>getting precompiled stuff
01:53<sney>Kinch_larptarp, you have a working network connection and a dvd burner? download debian dvd1, add it to your offline machine with apt-cdrom, and there's all the xfce you could possibly need as well as a ton of other package s

09:29<babilen>aef_: Why don't you configure the IPv6 interface directly in /e/n/i ?

09:29<babilen>err, "iface eth0 inet6 static .."
09:30<babilen>aef_: I don't quite understand why you add an IPv4 interface at all also (inet vs inet6) - Could you elaborate on that please?
09:30<aef_>babilen: we did try that, with exactly the same effect as with the post-up hooks
09:31<filePeter>aef_: Works for me here.

09:35<babilen>aef_: And you say that if you do that (i.e. ^^^) you still have only IPv4? May I see that please? Could you adapt your /e/n/i accordingly and then run "ifdown -a ; ifup -a ; ifconfig -a" and paste the output of that along with your /e/n/i file? (make sure you don't forget "auto eth0" if you want the interface to be brought up automatically during boot (by "ifup -a" that is)) -- If you prefer to stick with "allow-hotplug" adapt the commands ...
09:35<babilen>... earlier to bring up eth0 explicitly.
09:38<aef_>babilen: i only have remote access to the system, i could however reboot it
09:38<babilen>aef_: Don't forget to alter "allow-hotplug eth0" to "auto eth0" then or the "ifup -a" in the networking script won't bring it/them up

13:26<babilen>cloudrf: First of all: Wheezy is supported in #debian-next and you can just pull those packages from experimental (accepting that IT MIGHT BREAK YOUR SYSTEM HORRIBLY) -- For that to work set your default release to testing (as in "/msg dpkg tum") and add sid/experimental sources to your sources.list and just pull it from there. (see also "/msg dpkg experimental")
13:27<cloudrf>I understand that, i am currently not worried about that
13:27<babilen>Set your default release to "wheezy" if you use that, but be aware of the consequences/differences. ("What happens to my system when wheezy is released?") -- Please also note that XFCE 4.10 will *not* be part of wheezy.
13:28<babilen>cloudrf: So forget source packages and just pull the binaries from experimental, but be aware that we have no idea if they are there because they are horribly broken, due to the freeze or both

22:35<nevyn>so what do you want to compile from source?
22:35<nevyn>you can gain a basic c dev environment by installing !build-essential
22:35<dpkg>extra, extra, read all about it, build-essential is a package designed to help you create executables and build Debian packages. If you get errors saying gcc cannot create executables or can't find header files like stdio.h, you need to "aptitude install build-essential". If you don't plan to compile things, you don't need this package. See also <qotd49>.
22:36<PaulTeale>i already have build-essential installed

22:36<PaulTeale>yes i want to compile from a source
22:37<PaulTeale>but its saying libnet.h missing
22:37<PaulTeale>thing is i just installed libnet
22:37<nevyn>did you install libnet-dev?
22:37<nevyn>cause libnet doesn't have libnet.h in it
22:37<PaulTeale>ahhh no i didnt
22:37<PaulTeale>thats all libnet-dev ?

22:42<nevyn>how did you compile it?
22:42<PaulTeale>gcc -o
22:42<nevyn>needs -lnet
22:43<PaulTeale>now it simply says theres no file of this type
22:43<nevyn>is there a makefile?
22:44<nevyn>so why are you running gcc -o?
22:44<nevyn>the makefile will know the right foo to get the linker to link in libnet
22:44<PaulTeale>cuz im kinda noobish i guess perhaps u could point me in the right direction
22:45<nevyn>it depends what you're building.
22:45<PaulTeale>theres only a .c
22:45<nevyn>is it an automake project or a plain make project or blah?
