03:05<Guest4564>ok its been awhile since i installed grub . where do i get it from
03:06<jm_>you already have it installed (the package) - what was meant, was that you'll need to put it back on MBR (or use windows loader to load linux ...)
03:06<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> simply boot to your Debian install disk, live CD or whatever else you have, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". Also ask me about <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>.

07:47<Airwave>I'm having trouble understanding why the unstable version of mumble-server (and mumble) haven't been migrated to testing yet.
07:47<SynrG>because we're in a freeze
07:48<SynrG>Not touching package due to block request by freeze (contact debian-release if update is needed)
07:48<Airwave>But the current version of mumble-server in testing is non-functional, i.e., it doesn't even run.

07:48<SynrG>still doesn't change the rules. an unblock request needs to be made
07:49<SynrG>and apparently one hasn't been made yet
07:49<Airwave>Ok. Who typically makes unblock requests?
07:49<SynrG>the maintainers
07:50<babilen>Airwave: Have you checked if the bug you refer to (i.e. "doesn't even run") has been reported? Which severity has it?
07:50<chaos>how do i set up an smtp server?
07:50<SynrG>sec, maybe an unblock request was made ...

07:54<Airwave>SynrG: A new version of mumble was released in sid since the last message of that report was made though.
07:55<Airwave>Fixing both the problem with 348-1 in Wheezy and the problem with 349-2 in Sid.
07:55<SynrG>yeah. i guess there has been some communication with release outside of this report, then
07:55<chaos>jm_: also ... it says that system with dynamic IP addresses should use smarthost
07:55<SynrG>mumble-django (related?) was unblocked on the 31st
07:56<SynrG>so it appears they're aware of the situation and working on it

07:59<chaos>they do and it did work until september this year
08:00<chaos>but since then i get a message that i broke the contract (they don't say how) and it doesn't work ... i've contacted them they said they fixed it but they did not
08:00<chaos>so i'm looking for an alternative
08:01<Airwave>I'm having trouble with popularity-contest. Whenever it tries to submit my packages, I get a "mail delivery failed," even though popularity-contest is configured to use HTTP.

13:44<Guest4637>I have mounted a directory. As I can only mount it using root, root is the owner of the directory. I want to change the owner from root to debian. 13:50<retrospectacus>yeah my wireless mouse is fine

16:07<labyrinth>fix, are you using alsa or pulseaudio? It might be a problem in your alsa drivers. You might try looking up if you can disable powersaving for your particular driver. Or set pulseaudio as glitch free
16:07<babilen>terrible_: yeah, remove the totally unsupported and unrecommended debian-multimedia entries from your sources.list and run "apt-get update". Then continue by installing the pkg-mozilla-archive-keyring to fix the GPG error. (you will be asked if you trust this pacakge, say yes and you should be set)
16:08<labyrinth>fix: sometimes the card can decide to sleep, though if its a problem in the driver level, only a new kernel 'might' fix it as far as i know, unless there are known workarounds
16:08<fix>yeah might be a good explanation why these computers seem to do it at random, maybe they each have different timing on power saving? Also none of these machines are allowed to suspend or sleep

16:27<dpkg>apt-file is a utility used to find which package owns a given file - or list files in a package - even if it is not installed: "aptitude install apt-file && apt-file update" ; then "apt-file search filename" to see a list of packages containing filename (can also use a regular expression; see man apt-file). You can also search online, ask me about <pdo>. See also <auto-apt>, <dlocate>.

20:36<sney>do you know if the hard drive is good? that's not a new laptop
20:36<fix>but I cant upgrade the bios because the damn bs windows bios updator wont update without a battery and one of the cells melted down in this things battery so no battery=no bios
20:37<fix>Actually, I usually test the hard disk wit hirems, but I completely forgot
20:37<siddy>can't you plug it in?
20:38<sney>I'm surprised a dell of that age doesn't have a bootable bios updater, but I doubt that problem has anything to do with the bios
20:38<sney>it's failing on a disk copy operation if it's "installing software" so that's either a) bad drive, b) bad install media, or c) bad motherboard
20:38<fix>bios updator requires it plugged in AND has a functional battery

20:58<matlock>Dell's firmware-tools project and dell software repository provide a mechanism which can be used to update the BIOS and other firmware on our systems.
