00:00<tpo>Now, I'm at the point of the installation where I'm asked what software selections it should install... should I install sql database, dns server, file server or mail server?? I have very vague ideas of what all that means
00:00<tpo>fix: mine is an acer aspire e1-421
00:00<babilen>tpo: If you are not asked it you can always enable them later. You need those two in order to be able to install packages from non-free (such as firmware)
00:01<tpo>babilen: yeah, I remember editing sources.list with that kind of stuff :)
00:01<fix>Acer Aspire 5733
00:01<fix>core i3
00:01<fix>6gb ram
00:01<babilen>tpo: You will, most likely, not need to install them now. You can *always* install more software later. I would reocmmend to install the standard and desktop task. If this is a laptop you want the laptop task too. Everyhting else is better handled later.
00:02<tpo>babilen: thanks

00:02<babilen>tpo: yeah, exactly. just add a "contrib non-free" at the end of deb/deb-src lines in /etc/apt/sources.list (see also "/msg dpkg contrib" and "/msg dpkg non-free sources")
00:02<fix>wouldnt it be easier to simply supply him with a source.list file
00:03<themill>fix: not really. What would you put in it?

00:05<tpo>so babilen: what's this /msg thing you're doing? I see a dpkg tab with messages from you in it... I'm sorry, I've never really used irc before
00:07<LtL>tpo: they are factoids from dpkg the bot, read them.
00:07<tpo>I have LtL, I just don't know how babilen did that
00:08<babilen>tpo: "/msg dpkg foo" sends a private message to our bot (dpkg) asking it to tell you more about "foo" -- Our factoids also contain references to other factoids such as "See <dpkgbot> for further information" -- That essentially means that you can either "/msg dpkg dpkgbot" or mention "dpkgbot" in the message with dpkg to learn more about that.

00:10<babilen>tpo: It is the "tell USER about FOO" -- See "/msg dpkg dpkgbot" ;)
00:10<tpo>LtL I shall be careful in my proceedings
00:10<tpo>babilen: so I just type "/msg x y" in the message bar or how does it work?
00:11<LtL>tpo: i'm not one of them though, but 'tis true
00:11<tpo>LtL well I'm just a fellow mortal ;)

00:19<LtL>tpo: downgrading packages isn't wise, you tend to break things. kernels are generally the same, no need to downgrade them.
00:20<tpo>LtL what I meant is: if I install a latter version of the kernel can I also install latter versions of packages from the repositories? I was having some trouble with the texmaker version of the squeeze repos and I needed to upgrade that package; in the end I downloaded a .deb and installed it without much trouble...
00:22<dondelelcaro>that's annoying
00:22<LtL>tpo: using older kernels is a rare thing, but there may be exceptions, but some packages rely on the current kernel.

17:15<Ablac>Its been stuck there for a few min :/
17:16<dondelelcaro>Ablac: right, which is because those init scripts are horribly broken.
17:16<dondelelcaro>Ablac: you can ctrl-c out of that, and then fix them.
17:16<Ablac>Thx :)
17:16<themill>yeah, it's basically saying what dondelelcaro was saying about them having odd headers. And apt-get will have done that last time you tried to install something too, which is why you ended up with dpkg saying that you needed to run dpkg --configure -a

20:52<dragondon>how to check?
20:55<wompa>by default I think you should have desktop switcher, sound volume, clock, window picker, simple menu, notification area, show desktop
20:58<dragondon>not quite. I got sound, clock, simple menu(by that I guess you mean Applications/Places/System), notification area. I did remove show desktop/window picker quite a while back, but essentially the same

21:03<wompa>dragondon, removing those directories should reset Gnome settings. Although I would try to just rename them first to .gnome2_backup or something first as a test. You should probably log out of Gnome first and do it from another tty

23:24<dpkg>[ssh] the Secure SHell; "aptitude install ssh" (<openssh>). Clients for other platforms include <putty> and <cygwin>. Firewalls to mitigate against brute-force attacks on your SSH server include <fail2ban> and <denyhosts>.
