00:01<dysto>awesome! my turn? haha I just want to be able to reliably set acpi settings.. and enable the touchscreen on my toughbook.
00:02<dysto>been scouring the web for a few days and no luck.
00:03<sney>acpi is a pain. you can try with acpitool but you might wind up needing to find or write your own scripts
00:07<dysto>sney, I have had to make bash aliases to change my lcd brightness, and for cpu scaling, so I would be okay with that. I just don't know how to go about it exactly. specifically suspending the system on lid close. I found the /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state file.. so how do I write a script to watch that file for 'closed' then tell acpitool 'acpitool -s'
00:07<Infiltrator>dysto: You could hack up a script to check .../state for closed and run acpitool -s and then cron it.
00:08<Infiltrator>dysto: Or you could just write the script with an infinite loop.
00:08<Infiltrator>But you have to be careful that you don't end up calling acpitool -s too many times.
00:08<dysto>I need to up my bash chops. time to read read read. :p
00:09<Infiltrator>Good luck.

00:10<dysto>oh! a weird thing happened though, I just remembered. I installed hal, and then suspend on lid close worked, bu it stopped after I rebooted. whats that about?
00:11<sney>there's also the package eeepc-acpi-scripts, which are (duh) some scripts to support acpi on the asus eee series. but the syntax may be worth looking at
00:11<dysto>sney, nice! thanks. I saw that looking through acpi stuff with apt-cache but ignored it because it seemed eee specific.

08:14<luca_>Hi guys! Someone knows a way to get the last Vim version on Squeeze (i am thinking about a repository, i would like to keep it updated) ?
08:15<Stummi>luca_, aptitude update?
08:15<luca_>(well... i was really direct to go the problem... anyway i am Luca, what's shaking??)
08:16<mgv>Stummi: he's on squeeze...
08:16<Stummi>oh, wait, sorry
08:16<jm_>you could backport it yourself

08:17<luca_>jm_ i was looking for a quicker solution but, if i don't find anything, i am going to do that and learn something
08:18<luca_>mvg sorry i don't get the meaning... a lots of ignorance here... :S
08:18<luca_>Stummi Also, i don't get the meaning of ECHAN :D
08:19<mgv>luca_: error code
08:19<Stummi>i thought we are on #debian-next here
08:19<mgv>luca_: see man 3 errno. error codes look like ESOMETHING

08:22<mgv>if you ask dpkg about ssb, it will tell you how to backport a package.
08:22<mgv>!ssb luca_
08:22<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

19:52<terrible96>retrospectacus, the user was create it long time ago but i reinstall and now i cant login with the user

19:52<dbcooper>not sure what exact model number but I know it needs the SiS driver (which is installed, I just need a way to switch to it. For some reason, "dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg" doesn't work anymore and editing my xorg.conf did nothing
19:52<wheezyuser>SamB, however .. strictly speaking .. is it bad karma and bad policy for the OS to add /usr/local/bin by default to peoples PATH
19:53<retrospectacus>terrible96: yes, you said that.
19:53<wheezyuser>stderr, change my config why ? I did not write the ld config .. the Debian package people did .. isn't my business to change the OS
19:53<terrible96>retrospectacus, with adduser i can fix that??
19:53<wheezyuser>SamB, my PATH is /usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/opt/schily/bin

19:53<retrospectacus>terrible96: yes, or with useradd.
19:54<wheezyuser>stderr, dude .. you miss the point. The operation of ldconfig or aptitude has no business ever looking into /usr/local/lib by default and that is the issue

19:55<wheezyuser>SamB, tradition is not a standard
19:55<stderr_dk>No, you're missing the point. The general use-case is that if you install something in /usr/local you want to use it.

19:56<stderr_dk>wheezyuser: So the OS shouldn't know what libraries are installed?
19:56<terrible96>retrospectacus, alright
19:57<wheezyuser>SamB, really to be more out in left field .. consider a company named foobar software inc that creates software and then releases software packages and those software pieces are then installed according to well established and documented hard standards into places like /opt/foobar and /etc/opt/foobar and /var/opt/foobar then the OS has no business EVER looking there
19:57<wheezyuser>stderr, the OS has no right or business to ever get involved in things that are NOT provided by the OS vendor
19:57<SamB>wheezyuser: have you even READ the FHS?
19:57<wheezyuser>see my previous long comment
19:58<wheezyuser>SamB, uh ... yeah .. I probably wrote some of it
19:58<SamB>and sure the OS has no business poking about in /opt; that's different
19:58<stderr_dk>So if /opt/foobar/bin/foo uses a library, the OS shouldn't be able to find that library in /opt/foobar/lib/ ?
19:58<wheezyuser>stderr, RPATH
19:58<wheezyuser>stderr, RPATH solves that
19:59<wheezyuser>stderr, the OS does not need to ever go looking for a lib anywhere other than in RPATH first and then the system libs like libC etc
19:59<SamB>stderr_dk: I don't see anything in my about /opt
19:59<wheezyuser>let me paste a sample
19:59<wheezyuser>SamB, exactly !
19:59<dbcooper>retrospectacus: Already been to that page. My issue is that xserver supposedly can detect what graphics card you have if you don't explicitly name on in your xorg.conf file. For me, that didn't happen. It just went with VESA and a 920*600 resolution. I know I need to edit xorg.conf to get it to use the SiS drivers, but after I edited the xorg.conf file, it seems to have not taken affect.
19:59<stderr_dk>So "foobar software" needs to provide that library too, even if the OS already got it?
19:59<wheezyuser>SamB, and that is correct .. however /usr/local/lib is NOT really part of the OS at all
20:00<SamB>wheezyuser: anyway, software in /usr/local doesn't normally use RPATH
20:00<wheezyuser>stderr, yes .. bingo
20:00<stderr_dk>SamB: Ok, bad example, but wheezyuser mentioned /opt/foobar
20:00<wheezyuser>stderr, the libs provided by the vendor of the software .. say Oracle for example .. must be in the RPATH
20:00<stderr_dk>wheezyuser: Why would I want to have the same library twice?
20:00<SamB>wheezyuser: it's a documented place to put stuff you expect to work
20:00<wheezyuser>stderr, is usually isn't the same lib

23:19<sney>I literally have no idea what you're talking about so I can't help you
23:20<MJX>Thank you very much
23:20<Infiltrator>MJX: What do you want to do with it?

23:22<MJX>Connect the satellite by telephone...
23:22<MJX>Do you know how to do it ?
