01:06<toothpick>bubchi89: that's true
01:06<toothpick>bubchi89: but we don't know where to look. is it a program causing it? or X
01:06<bubchi89>Cool, I want to switch to some systems work. I am doing web services now and it's sort of boring :p
01:06<toothpick>bubchi89: we don't know yet

01:06<bubchi89>Right, but it's a peeling the onion sort of thing
01:07<bubchi89>If we have a few places that are likely to have captured the error in their output/logs then we can check those
01:07<bubchi89>maybe they describe the error that occurred, or which component failed. And then we peel another layer
01:07<toothpick>and likely those are xorg logs and xsession-error
01:07<toothpick>Oh another behaviour i noticed
01:07<bubchi89>Possibly, I don't know honestly. I barely know what X is other than that it's used for the GUI heh
01:08<toothpick>if i select Power Off from my user name menu, and then click cancel, it prompts me again right away
01:08<toothpick>well, you have the basics. X is the specification. it has api for basic shapes like rectangle circle etc
01:08<toothpick>gnome uses that to draw shapes
01:09<bubchi89>Huh? I thought gnome was just a desktop. Like it contained a bunch of different packages including ones that use X to draw stuff
01:09-!-eratron [~eratron@] has quit [Quit: leaving]
01:09<toothpick>i don't see contradiction in what i said and what you said
01:09<toothpick>that's what i said, gnome is just a window manager
01:09<bubchi89>I didn't think gnome did anything itself basically
01:09<toothpick>it uses X to draw stuff
01:10<bubchi89>fair enough
01:10<toothpick>ofcourse gnome does "something"
01:10<toothpick>fair then we have agreement
01:10<bubchi89>It prompts you again hm...
01:10<bubchi89>I wouldn't be surprised if autoremove borked your gnome installation and not really sure how to repair it
01:10<toothpick>ya. hit cancel prompts me again if i wanna shutdown or cancel or restart
01:10<bubchi89>maybe it's possible to reinstall gnome instead of the entire OS
01:11<toothpick>gdm3 hmm
01:11<bubchi89>well gdm has like a billion dependencies so not really sure how that'd work
01:11<toothpick>yeah true
01:11<bubchi89>It's actually a main reason why I gave up on it and switched to windows manager. I was glad this time around that i3-wm exists which seems to be really polished and actively developed
01:11<bubchi89>The other reason was just that I wanted to resize things with my keyboard and a tiling WM makes more sense for that
01:12<toothpick>what is that? another window manager?
01:12<toothpick>i see, got screenshot of how ur desktop looks like?
01:12-!-aiaco [~aiaco@] has joined #debian
01:12<bubchi89>I think there's a distinction between desktops and window managers. Window managers _just_ manage windows. Desktops have things like file managers and task bars and such
01:12<bubchi89>Haha, my "desktop" is literally just a terminal, with firefox next to it, and a bar at the bottom that says like "CPU: 35C | 262.2 GB free"
01:13<toothpick>show me
01:13<bubchi89>you can look up i3 wm if you want to see what it looks like. The best part, imo, is that it has great defaults
01:13<toothpick>i wanna see
01:13<bubchi89>I don't even know how to take a reasonable screenshot yet haha. I can capture it into a .ps file that's huge and I don't know how to convert it yet. Let me just link you the site
01:13<toothpick>i like gdm3 too, a lot of power, i can run full screen game and flip pages (workspaces)
01:13<bubchi89>Yeah workspaces are huge. I'm confused why Windows doesn't support it yet natively

01:17<toothpick>you dont' like mouse? that's strange one. why?
01:17<toothpick>depends on what platform i'm programming for
01:17<toothpick>if it's java/c then I use mostly eclipse
01:17<bubchi89>Because when I learned vim in college, I started to use the keyboard more and more while I did work
01:18<bubchi89>and it become more and more annoying to move my hand off the keyboard to the mouse to do certain things
01:18<toothpick>:) i see
01:18<bubchi89>and I just thought "why... couldn't you just add a keybinding to do that?"
01:18<bubchi89>And you can. Just it's non-trivial on windows and without a nice, flexible WM
01:18<toothpick>but look at it this way, moving hand once in a while to the mouse can really be healthy for ur hand :)

01:23<bubchi89>toothpick: Well...
01:23<bubchi89>toothpick: The mouse is certainly more natural in a lot of cases, but it has inherent deficiencies
01:23<bubchi89>Continuing with our example, why would I want to resize a window with the mouse?
01:24<bubchi89>Literally 99% of the time I just need to make it less wide or less tall... that's it. And moving the mouse so to that tiny ~3px border to do so is not only slow, but difficult
01:24-!-babilen_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:24<bubchi89>So basically I'm arguing that the keyboard is the right tool for the job in a lot of cases
01:25<bubchi89>What the mouse excels at is that it's incredibly natural. Once you get used to a mouse, it can function in so many different ways with just two operations: 1) Click, 2) Drag
01:25<bubchi89>So you learn two things, and you can do a billion things in a billion different UIs
01:26<bubchi89>It has a low learning curve, but it's slower at doing almost each of those different jobs
01:26<bubchi89>every one of those*
01:26-!-carandraug [~carandrau@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:27<toothpick>You are right in those specific cases. Resizing is just one example where a keyboard will work fine so I agree with you. But there have been thesis done in HCI labs where absolute pointing device has a case of its own. For instance in various areas of 3D object manipulation, various architects use specially designed mouse for that. Keyboard just won't do the job. Avoiding the usual mistake of "When you have a hammer, then everything
01:27<toothpick> looks like a nail".
01:27<toothpick>it works for 99% of the tasks that _you_ do :)
01:28<bubchi89>Yeah of course
01:28<bubchi89>I'm not advocating that everyone use a mouse... but I would say the vast majority of people aren't architects :P
01:28<toothpick>fair enough
01:28<bubchi89>But the obvious counter-argument is, the vast majority of people won't benefit from these micro-efficiencies and heavily appreciate the low learning curve of the mouse
01:29<bubchi89>I told my friend all of these silly things I've memorized for my keyboard (I also use vimperator/pentadactyl in firefox) and he was like "bubchi89, all of those things you described take like 2 seconds with a mouse"

13:13<jp->it's a web based solution from amazon to reading kindle ebooks.
13:13<mrvn>mtn: No. Amazon won't let me download the book. Only a kindle (hardware or software) reader can.
13:14<mrvn>jp-: Will that let me save the book to e.g. my Poketbook ereader?

13:14<jp->I doubt it. Amazon's ebooks are DRM'd I'm sure.
13:14<jp->you can't just copy them to arbitrary devices and read them, if that's what you want then shop somewhere besides kindle.
13:15<mrvn>jp-: calibre should be able to handle the DRM as far as I've read. But you have to have the file first.

To install fglrx, see or ask me about <fglrx dkms>.
22:14<Ahmed>Oh, I wanted to first try editing the xorg.conf
22:15<Ahmed>Are you sure it won't help?
22:15<mshuler>oh.. R600 not supported in the current one, so looks like fglrx legacy, maybe
22:15<mshuler>Ahmed: I'm not sure what you would edit in xorg.conf to fix that
22:15<mshuler>unless you have hints from someone else
22:15<gsimmons>No, not even the legacy driver supports that GPU.
22:16<Ahmed>The things in the wiki page
22:16<mshuler>Ahmed: carry on, then :)
22:16<Ahmed>I have no hints but the wiki said it improves things
22:16*mshuler needs to go pick up daughter

22:17<mshuler>Ahmed: right - that config is only for "use this driver on this screen" and other tidbits, but nothing to fix that text problem that I can think of
22:17<mshuler>I'm not sure, other than trying another driver, but it looks like ATI/AMD has left you out in the cold :(
22:18<Ahmed>the current driver had no issues with Xfce nor with Mate
22:18<Ahmed>Can we blame Gnome instead?
22:19<mshuler>why not? use xfce (or my preference, kde)
22:19*mshuler really leaves :)

22:29<Ahmed>I downloaded CD1
22:30<LtL>Ahmed: you can start over and choose a different desktop from that cd1 has alternates
22:31<LtL>i think cd1 has alternates rather.
22:33<Ahmed>The installation only gave me the option to install "Debian Desktop Environment"
22:33<Ahmed>I doubt more than one DE could fit in less than 700mb
22:33<LtL>Ahmed: you would need to use the advanced install option, however i'm not certain other desktops are on cd1
22:33<Ahmed>Isn't this why they have a KDE CD and an Xfce CD?
