00:01<LtL>you forgot the hyphen
00:02<helpless>Hi, I recently moved my hard drive to a new computer and x11 seems to be crashing on start. I think it's misconfigured somehow, but I wouldn't know where to look.
00:02<CountryfiedLinux>installing :D thanks
00:02<LtL>no problem
00:03<CountryfiedLinux>I think it installed. Do I update grub now?
00:03<LtL>CountryfiedLinux: it should have done that for you, just reboot
00:04<CountryfiedLinux>ok I'll try that thanks. brb

00:06<CountryfiedLinux>Successful reboot! thanks y'all :)
00:06<CountryfiedLinux>I need to manually install a driver and I didn't think it would be safe to upgrade to Testing in order to do so.
00:07<LtL>helpless: look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log
00:07<CountryfiedLinux>for future reference how do you search for a package again?

00:20<CountryfiedLinux>LtL, I tried the same way I did in Ubuntu with chmod +x then sh install

00:20<CountryfiedLinux>LtL, so it can't be done?

07:15<SynrG>when things are that badly broken in the installer, the team already knows about it
07:15<SynrG>the daily builds are intended for developers, not users, at this point
07:16<SynrG>filing bugs on it is probably not very productive use of your time or theirs :p
07:16<SynrG>when they want testers, they will make a public announcement soliciting your help

07:17<CQ>when I get access to the machine again I'll try it with a stable installer... I hadn't thought to try that
07:17<SynrG>yeah, do that.
07:18<petn-randall>CQ: The testing installer is a strongly moving target, so testing it isn't of much use at the moment. When testing is frozen (in around 1 to 1,5 years) testing the testing installer is of much more use.

10:06<CQ>question ... ... how does copying the ISO to the /dev/sdXX where the USB stick is work? does the ISO image jsut get written there, and then on boot get recognized by the BIOS and booted?
10:09<petn-randall>CQ: Yes, it comes with a boot loader, so you can boot from it if your BIOS supports that.
10:10<stderr_dk>CQ: The beginning of the ISO works as a partition table. By copying it to /dev/sdX (/dev/sdX is the whole disk, while /dev/sdXX means a partition), you're actually partitioning the USB stick and giving it a boot-loader.

12:27<CountryfiedLinux>SynrG, thanks I'll try to install now :)
12:27<SynrG>CountryfiedLinux: there are two possibilities i can't tell from what little info you shared. either you installed linux-image-amd64 from wheezy-backports, or you installed linux-image-3.11-0.bpo.2-amd64
12:28<SynrG>CountryfiedLinux: you should install the *corresponding* package from wheezy-backports for linux-headers
12:28<SynrG>i.e. if you want to always just have the "latest" from wheezy-backports, install the metapackage. otherwise, the kernel package itself.
12:28<SynrG>and make the headers package match, depending on your preference.
12:28<CountryfiedLinux>SynrG, It was the latter.
12:30<SynrG>then install linux-headers-3.11-0.bpo.2-amd64 (you needn't specify -t wheezy-backports, since that's the only target offering that package)
