04:17<nocturnal>you're not typing the argument wrong, there is something wrong with your vbox install. did you check your syslog? also I would create a brand new vm just to see that it's not vm related. and then if it's vbox related I would try purging the package and reinstalling.

04:18*cousin_luigi is having problems with logrotate, namely it doesn't appear to be working and some files grow to uncontrolled sizes like algae in warm water
04:19-!-bdog7 [] has joined #debian
04:19<nocturnal>cousin_luigi: did you try running logrotate manually once?
04:19<cousin_luigi>said files are in /var/log/ulog and there appears to be a related entry in /etc/logrotate.d/
04:19<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: I launched /etc/cron.daily/logrotate, yes
04:19<cousin_luigi>no workies
04:20<cousin_luigi>should I do something else?
04:20<nocturnal>try running sudo logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
04:20<nocturnal>you can turn on -d
04:20<nocturnal>for debug
04:20-!-andreasj [] has joined #debian

04:21<wardhan>Firefly42: according to this page, u need to register ur vm, perhaps
04:21<nocturnal>cousin_luigi: you said files are growing to uncontrolled sizes, did you mean only one specific file?
04:21<nocturnal>cousin_luigi: because if you did then maybe you need a ruleset for that file

04:25<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: how would you generate good random garbage to test it?
04:25<nocturnal>you don't need anything inside the file if you're just rotating by day.
04:25<cousin_luigi>I see. Can I do it more frequently and with a size limit?

04:28<nocturnal>cousin_luigi: actually I'm wrong about that, logrotate does not rotate empty files. so I'm afraid I can't help you. you can try generating random data with openssl or /dev/urandom
04:29-!-kelsoo [~kelsoo@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
04:29<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: yeah, thought so

04:29<Firefly42>\o/ it worked
04:31<nocturnal>cousin_luigi: for data in $(seq 0 1000); do echo "$(date): $(openssl rand 100)" >> logfile; done for example
04:31<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: I'm running debian on a sbc and storage/memory are a bit limited. I think I should set a size limit for that directory and run logrotate every 6 hours or so. I'm uncertain how to modify the ulogd script, though.
04:31<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: thanks
04:32<nocturnal>or openssl rand 100 -base64 if you want a cleaner file.
04:32<nocturnal>then set logrotate for a smaller size limit
04:33<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: but how many will it keep?

04:37<cousin_luigi>nocturnal: it would be nice to keep them if the overall size doesn't exceed a set limit, but I guess it's not possible from logrotate, righ?
04:39-!-pamaury [] has joined #debian
04:39<nocturnal>you mean keep old logfiles? then you'd have to archive them yourself
04:39<nocturnal>with a crontab

23:45<jalal>TLF: Hello.
23:45<TLF>may I ask: it's there an explanation for apt-cache to work like charm as a regular user, and to take more than 10 minutes for a single search as a root user?
23:47<themill>TLF: please don't shop around for answers -- stick to your distro's support channel
23:48<TLF>themill: If only I could get some answers... :) Not a newbie here, unfortunately :(
