00:49<us_0gb>How bad of an idea would it be to add a repository meant for Ubuntu to my Debian installation?
00:50<themill>!why not a ppa
00:50<dpkg>PPAs (Ubuntu's Personal Package Archives, see <PPA>) are not built against Debian releases, they are built against Ubuntu releases. This makes using packages from them on a Debian box highly unlikely to work out well. Ask me about <ssb> <package recompile> <bobbitt>.

00:51<us_0gb>Thanks themill!
00:53-!-bullgard4 [] has joined #debian
00:53<us_0gb>I wonder about instead grabbing the package from Debian Unstable ... It wouldn't be guaranteed to work with Debian Stable, but it sounds like it would be more likely to work.

01:01<themill>it looks trivial to backport; or you could wait a couple of weeks as the maintainer was planning to backport it himself

01:02<us_0gb>I think I'll just stick with XChat, at least for the time being.
01:02<us_0gb>!why backport caveat
01:03<us_0gb>Okay, maybe that's the wrong syntax for that.
01:03<themill>!backport caveat
01:03<dpkg>Remember that in installing backports, you will be using an unusual configuration of packages that has not been tested as thoroughly as Debian stable and that newer packages have both newer features and newer bugs. Ask me about <version chasing>. Also note that you can't rely on backports to patched quickly if vulnerabilities are discovered.
01:03<us_0gb>Yeah, that warning.
01:03<themill>that's simply a statement of fact. You've got to evaluate the risks or rewards yourself.

03:40<rryoumaa>wumpscut: tor is part of wheezy, was it a version number issue?
03:41<wumpscut>I dont think it has something to do with tor, just mentioned it as its the only repository I added
03:41<nevyn>tor in wheezy is broken according to upstream (and it's a crypto/security project .. so I'd be inclined to believe them)
03:41<nevyn>wumpscut: did you add the torproject key
03:41<nevyn>as per the directions...
03:42<wumpscut>I think so, but im not 100% sure :/ thing is, I added torproject like a month ago and this is the first time I see something like this

22:41<que1>what's the difference between gtk-update-icon-cache and gtk-update-icon-cache-3.0? I've been researching and I couldn't find anything about it

22:45<que1>what's the difference for icons between gtk2 and gtk3? don't programs using gtk2 or gtk3 use the same icons?
22:45<sney>well, it's not that there's a difference so much as gtk3 will eventually replace gtk2, and as such ships its own set of utilities and stuff

23:03<caravel>hey there. Wheezy and data being all good on sda, I've used gnome-disk-utility to reformat sdb over luks and use it as a backup drive. I had the "good idea" to try GUID, then created a LUKS/ext4. All went pear shape since then: DMA errors all over the place. Can't even boot sda any more. Could anyone please help, at least help me understand what's going on?
