00:00<Nemoder>the groups command will list the groups you are in
00:01<mask>i am in the 'audio' group and mute is not on
00:01<Nemoder>is there more than one audio device? press F6 in alsamixer and make sure it's the right one
00:02<mask>yes, there are two audio devices, how do i tell which one is the right one?
00:03<Nemoder>what are they called?
00:03<mask>HDA ATI SB and HD-Audio Generic

00:04<Nemoder>i would guess the first one is your onboard audio
00:04<Nemoder>but i would check the volume levels on both
00:06<mask>with HDA ATI SB (the '1' choice) I have set everything to max volume. with HD-Audio Generic (the '0' choice) I only have one control that does not have any kind of a bar on top of it and thus far only has settings of <MM> or <00>
00:06<Nemoder>ya that might be hdmi audio or somesuch
00:06<mask>and with those settings it says S/PDIF below it
00:07<Nemoder>as root try: aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav

00:12<Nemoder>maybe the default card is set to the wrong one
00:13<mask>that could be, i just tried to open an mp3 file with vlc and got the following error
00:13<mask>The audio device "default" could not be used: No such file or directory.
00:14<mask>after using the cmd 'alsamixer' in the terminal and then F6 to select the sound card i still have this problem, is there another way to change the default?
00:14<Nemoder>I dont think that changes anything just lets you choose which to adjust
00:14<mask>ah ok, do you know how i would go about setting a different default?

00:15<Nemoder>i'm a bit hazy on that, you may need to setup a /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file

00:38<Guest2129>Thanks. Long story short, I need to determine what settings in Debian will work best to get some o ther people to use Linux. That means it has to be similar to Windows 7
00:38<Guest2129>So far I am using Debian KDE which seems the closest

01:21<Nemoder>although I think udev is smarter about remembering things now
01:23<mask>Nemoder, i read the debian alsa wiki, but there is a lot of background information that i will have to go through to really understand how i need to apply the module index in my case, after i created the file i saved it and restarted the system, so it is working at the moment, if that fails then i guess i will really have to start reading
01:24<jm_>would index really work if the same module is used for two cards? it works for me with two different modules

06:56-!-fatoche [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
06:56<nocturnal>you can use sftp, which is like using ssh.
06:57<nocturnal>winscp is a good client
06:57<nocturnal>if you want to specifically use ftp, then I would suggest ftps with ssl. the extreme case is tunneling ftp over ssh.
06:57<ColombianBootloader>ok so I can set up my FTP server in my debian machine. and then each win 7 client will be using winscp?
06:57<jmw>sftp *is* using ssh
06:57<nocturnal>but that seems overkill to tunnel ftp over ssh
06:57<nocturnal>you can setup your openssh in your debian machine and activate sftp
06:59<nocturnal>I've been preseeding wheezy without problems until today when I suddenly get the keyboard layout prompt on a new pxe server. I tried adding d-i keyboard-configuration/variant select Svensk and that made the selection jump to Swedish but I can't get rid of the prompt. anyone recognize this issue? this seems related

12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: e.g. ls -l /usr/bin/java would show that it points to /etc/alternatives/java, but that's only a symlink to another file, as the alternatives system uses multiple symlinks. so update-alternatives --list java, as hlieberman says, shows you the ultimate destination
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: in irc when someone says "^" they are pointing at the previous thing said.
12:36<SynrG>to draw your attention to it
12:36<SynrG>(in this case the link to the article which answers your question)
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: the double-indirection is exactly how the alternatives system works. it allows a name of a thing to be associated with one of multiple things that provide it, installed simultaneously.
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: just read the update-alternatives man page, please. it explains exactly why:
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: a direct symlink would "belong to" the package providing it and is not configurable.
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: the double-indirection makes it configurable, as /etc is configurable according to FHS. does that make more sense?
12:36<SynrG>it would be a violation of the FHS for any program (e.g. update-alternatives) to take a symlink provided by a package under /usr/bin (or elsewhere outside of /etc) and change it to point somewhere else.
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: you're violating the FHS and corrupting packages
12:36<SynrG>we will not support you if you do that.
12:36-!-rmonin [] has joined #debian
12:36<SynrG>what you have is no longer jvm as provided by debian, but jvm as hacked by you
12:36<SynrG>sreyan32: to reiterate, configuration belongs in /etc. period. when you mess with that, *do not expect your packages to work*
12:37<SynrG>if you tinker with files owned by packages in that way, you are entirely on your own for support.
12:37<SynrG>the dpkg system *respects* /etc changes, but it has absolutely no idea if you f*ck with package files outside the bounds of what FHS allows for
12:37<SynrG>sreyan32: let me simplify it for you. you, personally, may only need a simple symlink. imagine a debian-like distro called 'deb-sreyan'. in deb-sreyan there is only one package providing a jre. that contains a symlink /usr/bin/jvm -> the specific version it provides.
12:37<SynrG>so when your user population is *one*, managing alternatives isn't needed.
12:37<SynrG>but debian has multiple javas, and they are not conflicting javas either. they can all be installed at once.
12:37-!-Auroch [~Auroch@] has quit [Quit: leaving]
12:37<SynrG>however, only one of those javas can be called /usr/bin/java
12:37<SynrG>the alternatives system solves this problem.
12:37<SynrG>just make sure that your own packages that only point at one jvm conflict with all other possible javas that might want to create /usr/bin/jvm
12:37<SynrG>because your non-alternatives-system-aware java won't be compatible
12:37<SynrG>trying to install them simultaneously will break.
12:37<SynrG>hm? if you uninstall sun java and it uses the alternatives system then yes, the next priority thing assumes that role.
12:37<SynrG>is that what you were asking?

15:58<circ-user-2OXsy>I never had this problem on my last debian install blast007. Granted I didn't set that server up as it was a VPS. I had to get a dedicated due to the fact the game servers I am running are CPU time heavy.
15:59<blast007>all I can suggest would be checking the error log output from those game servers or running each server individually and verify that they are not binding to the same port or something

16:02<circ-user-2OXsy>There are no errors and if it was binding to the same port it would tell me that. The commands throws no errors either, this is why I am wondering if there is a bottleneck on the os side so to speak
16:02<circ-user-2OXsy>because like I said, it does work on another debian install. I have 5 concurrent servers for paying customers which I need to move over to this server
16:02<blast007>does the sercond server just terminate and drop back to a shell?
16:02<circ-user-2OXsy>but I can't while I have the problem of only being able to run 1.

16:12<blast007>circ-user-2OXsy: one possible thing may be a bash vs dash thing. Wheezy uses 'dash' as the /bin/sh, where an older release probably used bash.
16:12<circ-user-2OXsy>OH, I guess I better look at that. Do you think the code will need to change much?
16:12<blast007>circ-user-2OXsy: if you script has #!/bin/sh at the start, you could try changing that to #!/bin/bash and see if the issue goes away (and then either decide that's good enough, or decide to update your script to work right with dash)
