00:19<RuPeRterer>yea i am
00:20<Gintru>I have it :
00:20<Gintru>type this : ldd /usr/bin/gedit
00:20<saiyan>ah, cool
00:20<Gintru>will give you all libs the binary is using

00:20<Gintru>SaluT / OuT O o .
00:21<saiyan>bye lol
00:21<saiyan>ok so lets see
00:22<saiyan>RuPeRterer: try typing "lspci | grep VGA"
00:23<somiaj>RuPeRterer: echo -e 'defaults.ctl.card 1\ndefaults.pcm.card 1' > $HOME/.asoundrc -- That will set your default sound card to 1 (your hdmi sound card) over your current 0
00:23<RuPeRterer>-bash: ispci: command not found
00:23<saiyan>its lspci but nvm that wont work anyways
00:23<somiaj>RuPeRterer: I'm assuming you awnt to change your default sound card. Otherwise you have to configure/tell your software to use your HDMI sound card for each piece of software
00:23<saiyan>type lspci and look for the audio card
00:24<RuPeRterer>alsmixer ?
00:24<somiaj>again notice how your hdmi is soundcard 1, so you can run 'alsamixer -c 1'
00:25<somiaj>or hit f6 in alsamixer to select the soundcard you want
00:25<RuPeRterer>do i need to set it to 0
00:25<saiyan>can someone help me install laMp?
00:26<saiyan>(linux, apache, mySQL,, PHP)
00:26<somiaj>RuPeRterer: look at the output you pasted and got kciked for (don't pate it again)
00:26<somiaj>RuPeRterer: notice how your hdmi card is card 1, so if you want to use your hdmi audio set it to card 1

00:33<Infiltrator>saiyan: Replace 'Wheezy' with 'wheezy'.

00:40<somiaj>saiyan: I was just thinking if you chose to use non-free softare you best get security updates too. (:
00:41<RuPeRterer>somiaj u give up on me lol

00:43<somiaj>RuPeRterer: run that command, do you hear noise comming out of your hdmi sound card?

00:48<somiaj>RuPeRterer: this means you need to configure pulseaudio to use the hdmi card 1 as default. Since I do not and have not used pulse I have no clue how to do this.
00:49<RuPeRterer>i have no idea wth pulse audio is
00:49<RuPeRterer>can i get rid of pulseaudo or no
00:50<somiaj>RuPeRterer: choice is yours, I don't like it, but that is just me. I think you are free to chooose for yourself. listen to themill and look at the pavucontrol program
00:50<RuPeRterer>i have not clue i am a debian noob

01:06<dpkg>1) add yourself to the 'audio' group (log out & in again) 2) unmute and raise channels w/ alsamixer (also try muting some & toggle jack sense if available) 3) <pulseaudio> or other daemon stopped? 4) speakers on? 5) does "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav" work for root? 6) purge any installed <oss4> packages to remove ALSA blacklist. See also <list alsa users>, <alsa firmware>.
01:06<somiaj>oh thought that said how

04:08<nocturnal>I need help with wm suggestions. I've been locked in a ratpoison bubble for many years and now I'm building a new computer with much cpu and ram. I still like the tiling WM concept but I'd like to know if there are tiling WMs with stuff like volume indicators, status bars with cpu load, ram usage. some eye candy basically.
04:08<nocturnal>I've been out of touch with WMs for years
04:08<nocturnal>don't know what's out there
04:08<nocturnal>I'm using wheezy
04:09<nocturnal>and yes I do already have some bindings in ratpoison that can show battery, load but only for a while with the ratpoison popup system. if I were to use a new WM I want it to show all the time.

04:16<babilen>nocturnal: I'd recommend awesome wm even though it probably falls short on your "eye candy" wishlist. It does have a number of "widgets" through it's "vicious" library, but they aren't really in the "bling bling" category, but rather in the "textual/minimally graphical, but informative" class

11:49<somiaj>Lilly: Any reason openjdk isn't working for you?
11:49<Lilly>well, my software needs java6 to run..
11:49<somiaj>Lilly: oracle will not allow us to distribute the non-free java version any more. You have to get it from them.
11:50<Lilly>added deb squeeze non-free
11:50<Lilly>and got it ;>
11:50<babilen>Lilly: And Sun's Java6 has been EOLed quite some time ago. Using it would constitute a significant security risk
11:50<somiaj>Lilly: apt-get install openjdk-6-jre, that is java 6
11:50-!-blazed [] has joined #debian
11:50-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
11:50<babilen>Lilly: OpenJDK is a Java implementation, are you sure you need Sun's version?
11:50<babilen>Lilly: And please don't mix releases, it is not good for your health ;)
11:50<somiaj>Lilly: if you really awnt sun's java don't get it from squeeze, go get it from orcale and use their support (you can just copy the java tree to /usr/local and link the binarys to /usr/local/bin to run)
11:51<somiaj>but most likely openjdk will work
11:51<babilen>Sun/Oracle stopped Java6 support quite some time ago --
11:52<dpkg>java-package (formerly mpkg-j2se, j2se-package) provides the make-jpkg utility for creating Debian packages from manually downloaded <Java> distributions; Oracle Java 6 (update >= 10) and Oracle Java 7 are currently supported. java-package is available for Debian 7 "Wheezy" and later systems in <contrib>. . Where possible, use <OpenJDK> instead, ask me about <install java>.
11:52<SynrG>^^ or that
11:52<babilen>I *really* wouldn't recommend to use it.
11:52<SynrG>(i consider that better than "get it from oracle" though)
11:52<babilen>(not java-package, but non-OpenJDK java 6)
11:53<SynrG>i agree.
11:53<somiaj>Ahh I don't follow the orcale java at all, didn't realize they stoped supporting it. Guess you want to get java 7 if you go oracles route. openjdk-6 is still supported though.
11:53<SynrG>somiaj: it's not that they stopped supporting it. they stopped supporting *java6*
11:53<babilen>It is indeed - Red Hat has somebody working on it.
11:53<SynrG>(what you said was ambiguous :)
11:54<babilen>Lilly: So, would openjdk be an option? Did you test it with OpenJDK?
11:54<babilen>dpkg: tell Lilly about install java
11:55<Lilly>babilen: well, the software has been said to work best on java6 from sun.
11:55<SynrG>Lilly: probably documentation written circa 2010 :p
11:55<SynrG>welcome to 2014
11:55<somiaj>Lilly: since sun doesn't really exist any more, that is outdated. (:
11:55<babilen>Lilly: Who says that? Did you follow our discussion and are you aware that simply by using Java6 from Sun that you are dealing with a number of security related issues?
11:56<Lilly>ie. java 7 makes the application to run very poor.

11:59<SynrG>Lilly: for certain ancient software it is possible java7 (sun or otherwise) doesn't work well for it. but in that case, you ought to be on a supported java6 that has security updates, not an unsupported one which will eventually lead to you getting hacked (due to java6's really poor security track record)

14:55<alonsog1997>I'm having trouble setting up Debian Wheezy on a computer with RAID. (Intel P55 with onboard sata controller, RAID mirroring enabled in the BIOS.) I can install CentOS 6.5 without a problem, which uses GRUB Legacy 0.97. However, when I try with GRUB2 0.99, or even downgrading manually to GRUB Legacy (removing grub-pc installing grub-legacy), it tells me grub-probe cannot find the specified device. (/dev/md126p2)
14:57<weasel>I'd ignore the bios raid. it's probably crappy anyway.
14:57<weasel>then, in the installer, just set up software raid. that should work.
14:57<alonsog1997>We're installing inside the partition instead of the MBR because otherwise, we cannot do a dual boot with Windows 7 while on Remote Desktop.
14:57<weasel>good luck.

14:59<alonsog1997>Should I try Debian Squeeze instead and then upgrade it to wheezy after the installation?

15:00<weasel>does installing grub into the mbr work?
15:00<alonsog1997>Well, then how will I get Debian installed? Or should I just use CentOS instead for our lab computer, which we also tested at home and verified it worked?

21:37<seawhores_>what worries me is that debian is such a big player in foss that it's adoption will eventually push other distros into the same situation (e.g. ubuntu, which already has happened as it's forced to use systemd as well). i just get worried about systemd's rediculous monopolistic behavior
21:37<somiaj>I think other init systems will be available in debian but they won't be supported as you may have to write/modify your own initscripts
21:38<seawhores_>i'm glad that debian will at least support sysvinit...
21:38<themill>Not using available libraries is normally considered to be poor engineering.

21:43<seawhores_>abrotman, i do care about Xorg's, but we have no other alternative. when wayland comes out i hope it will be better. as for udev, i think the best thing to do is fork it or rewrite it, not rewrite it and integrate it with systemd

21:44<seawhores_>no, i think forking is better to keep with the unix philosophy. if udev is a dead end (as many people have said), it's better to improve or fork it instead of requiring systemd
21:44<seawhores_>if udev is not a dead end and not harmful in the long run, then keep it

21:46<themill>seawhores_: there's nothing simple about thousands of buggy shell scripts
21:46<seawhores_>systemd's biggest problem is that it tries to replace so much of the operating system, not just the boot process. i wouldn't mind if systemd was more modular and you could trivially use any parts of it without requiring the rest...
21:47<seawhores_>themill, i don't have thousands of buggy shell scripts on my computer
21:47<Infiltrator>seawhores_: You should probably take this to #d-ot.
21:48<abrotman>"KISS" .. let's fork because it works too well .. seems simple
21:49<seawhores_>abrotman, if it works well, then no need to fork it unless it's going in a bad direction (e.g. monopoly).
