00:44<RainbowW>there is not a way to restrict ftpsync to a particular version, is there? debmirror would do that but didn't produce a usable mirror. ftpsync is at over 100g of stuff and only up to pool/main/l/llvm-toolchain-snapshot ... all i need is jessie amd64 ...

00:53<somiaj>RainbowW: you can backport (compile) your own custom package of that software
00:53<somiaj>,v ftpsync
00:53<judd>No package named 'ftpsync' was found in i386.
00:54<somiaj>RainbowW: oh wait making a mirror nevermind
00:54<RainbowW>it's not packaged, and i don't speak enough scriptfu to dissect it.
00:55<somiaj>Do you want all packages in jessie amd64 or just the ones you use
00:55-!-hele_ [] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
00:56<RainbowW>all packages. i'm building a mirror for testing and educational purposes. ~200 constantly reimaged clients, no consistent image, users need to be able to break and redo them. apt-cache seems the wrong choice, esp since i'm only on a 2mbit connection.
00:56-!-jesus [~jesus@] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
00:57<somiaj>RainbowW: seems in your etc/ftpsync.conf file you can have a list of EXCLUDE= and ARCH_EXCLUDE= options
00:57<somiaj>I'm surprised they don't have an include option as well, but the guide I found suggests you use somethign like
00:58-!-cornerman [] has joined #debian
00:58<RainbowW>yes, but what exactly do i exclude? i've learned how to exclude everything !amd64, but that still mirrors wheezy and sid.
00:58<RainbowW>i got like 20 different kernel choices.
00:58<RainbowW>link the guide?
00:59<somiaj>that is a copy of the config I saw that only mirrors wheezy i386 and amd64
00:59<somiaj>RainbowW: you say you are mirriong on a slow 2mbit connenction, why mirror jessie, that is going to change a lot and need lots of updating.
01:00<RainbowW>somiaj, my estimation is that i'll be able to keep up with jessie, and the software will be newer for testing/educational purposes than wheezy.
01:00<somiaj>It will also contain bugs and be harder to matain. I would suggest wheezy and create backports of stuff you find you need to be 'newer'
01:00-!-g_man [] has joined #debian
01:01<somiaj>but anyways hopefully that config limits thigns to what you want

06:05<weasel>debian packages are built on the premise that if you don't want their service, you don't install them.
06:06<jm_>stevenm_: man invoke-rc.d has a section about a policy, that should help
06:06<stevenm_>right but you might not want to start a service until you've configured it in it's configuration file

10:31<simondaemon>somiaj: thankyou.. I guess I'll try the web-installer before building myself a version 6.xy but if that fails I will try to build it..
10:31<somiaj>simondaemon: what web installer? You should be careful about how you install software outside of debian on a debian system.
10:32<somiaj>simondaemon: some notes. make sure the software is installed in either $HOME, /usr/local or some software likes /opt (I guess if it is just a bunch of webpage scripts installing the scripts into DocumentRoot is just fine)
10:33<somiaj>simondaemon: again do not install stuff in the standard /usr places as this could conflict with debian packaged software, and the other thing is if the software is percompiled binaries (I don't really know what opencould is) make sure it runs or is linked against libs you can find in wheezy

10:38<somiaj>simondaemon: common support issue here is someone isntalling random stuff on their machine and breaking it (usually it is a .deb package from another debian version or even another debian based distro that started the downhill spiral)

10:45<somiaj>It is fairly easy to install debian from a usb drive. The catch is debian gives you very special iso's that you want to do a direct copy (cp debian.iso /dev/sdc) provided /dev/sdc is your thumbdrive works great

15:44<carandraug>so I'm reading about configuring ntp and in many places it recommends to add "fudge stratum 10" at the bottom. From what I understood, this is so that the daemon uses itself when it can't connect an outside server. But really? Can't ntpd figure it out itself yet? Or this recommendation and old thing? Default Debian Jessie configuration does not have it
15:45<SynrG>i've never heard of it
15:47<carandraug>SynrG, I found it because it was on the configuration of a system which I'm now taking care of. It was by googling about it, and appears in many places. But never a very good explanation on the gory details on why ntpd would have problems with something as simple
15:47<carandraug>in this case is show but not explained
