02:12<CQ>what's the best way to get started with PHP (in particular to work on wordpress plugins)? Which IDE (Netbeans?) and how to debug (Xdebug?) are my main two questions... any suggestions?
02:14<shadow>CQ: what other background do you have?
02:15<andrew>CQ: Get the trial for phpstorm. Yeah, it's not open source, but (and this is coming from someone who will normally do anything to use the opensource way), it just really is worth the value in the time it saves, and the perspective it gives you in bigger projects. It also automatically pairs up with xdebug and every framework you would end up working with, which helps
02:15<CQ>Yes, C
02:16<andrew>and yeah, I guess plugins for any architecture would be fine. I chose mediawiki, but it's hellish in comparison to wordpress
02:17<shadow>andrew: does anything compare, once you're acquainted ?
02:17-!-chomwitt [] has joined #debian
02:17<andrew>shadow: I've used vim (which I quite like, but it's just not good for working within large object-oriented projects) and eclipse, which is simply shit. so in short, nothing really comes close
02:18<andrew>I really wish someone would extend vim to do it all though xD
02:18<shadow>good review, thanks ;0
02:19<CQ>as long as vim doesn't turn into emacs ; )
02:19*shadow stabs shift key covered in coffee
02:19<shadow>emacs is fine if your keyboard layout is from 1972
02:20<andrew>also, phpstorm is the same intellij as used for android development (though they got google backing, so their version of the IDE is free)
02:20-!-ne0sis [~quassel@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:20-!-ne0sis [~quassel@] has joined #debian
02:20<andrew>hahaha. I don't think something like emacs is necessary, it's just that the idea of an editor that lets you immerse yourself without thinking about it, that covers -all- the bases, would be wonderful
02:20<andrew>and vim only covers them up the requirements of pre-object projects, in my opinion
02:21<shadow>haven't used an IDE since... Borland in the '90s
02:21<shadow>not much of a coder either I'd say
02:22<andrew>shadow: well it's not really necessary unless if you're like, trying to figure out how an entire product is connected
02:23<shadow>you mean to say there's programmers trusted in this day and age to have a scope of a whole project? wow.
02:23-!-fr33k [] has joined #debian
02:23<shadow>good information anyhow thank you
02:24<andrew>shadow: well when everything is broken into objects, each piece is so small that it's hard to necessarily know what you need to modify (unless if the docs are good, which never happens), to get the functionality you want. so any assistance is good. as for the rest, idk :P
02:24<andrew>welcome :)
02:25-!-Tom___ [~textual@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:25<andrew>CQ: honestly though, why php? it's a really inconsistent language that's only useful if you have to work within a project already written in it. javascript is where all the resources are going nowadays
02:27-!-glebihan_ [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:27-!-glebihan_ [] has joined #debian
02:27<CQ>andrew: wordpress plugins...
02:27<dualbus>(without reading all the context, just the previous statement, I wonder how javascript is more "consistent" than PHP. Even simple stuff like the plus operator applied on different kinds of objects gives results that are not "consistent" to me)
02:28<dualbus>(the Wat talk from Destroy All Software is pretty concise in showing this. But anyways, off-topic. I just baited because it seemed like a pretty amusing claim)
02:29-!-jerrytgarcia [~jerrytgar@] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 0.4.3]
02:31<andrew>dualbus: it's trading one inconsistent language with another, but one runs in the browser, and the other does not, therefore has a bright future for it
02:31<dualbus>*shrugs*, no opinions on that matter. Just on the inconsistency thing.
02:31<andrew>haha sorry if I implied it was consistent
02:32<andrew>it's just, all the resources and the future of webapps is in it, and php is losing its market share

13:39<mazze>E. g. I can without problems do a 'fdisk -l' of the device and get the partition table every time. After reading a couple of seconds, when disk does not work any more, fdisk -l does not give anything.
13:39<sney>so there's still data on the platter(s) but the mechanical parts are failing
13:40<mazze>Sometimes also the device kind of 'resets', waiting around 8 secs after which the device is removed and reassigned to the kernel again. ddrescue exits in such a case ...
13:40<ixi>whitebyte all I can suggest is to try a newer kernel
13:40<sney>yeah, but ddrescue isn't guaranteed to recover everything. sometimes you need to either move the platter into a donor drive or just take it to a professional place
13:40<ixi>to fix same problem with dell laptop I had to install a 3.14 kernel for example.
13:41<mazze>sney the point is that there are parts of the disks being bad blocks now, but touching them makes the disk unaccessible until powered down and up again. After that, I can read again around the bad blocks

13:42<mazze>sney donor drive? you mean, I could disassemble the disk drive and put the platters in a compatible other disassembled, still working device?
13:42-!-q__ [~q@] has joined #debian
13:42<whitebyte>but that still doesn't guarantee the problem will be fixed
13:43<sney>yeah. as long as it's close enough in design, and you keep it a clean and static free environment, it's more likely to work than continuing to try and convince a broken drive to behave consistently
13:43<mazze>whitebyte I absolutely know that there is never a guarantee in such a case.
13:43<sney>and yeah it's only for the purpose of retrieving the data
13:44<sney>and there's a (relatively) high chance of messing up the platters when they're exposed to the outside world, so clean and static free is really not optional
13:44<mazze>doesn't sound like a lot of fun :(

13:46<mazze>Q: I knew that the disk did fall down, presumably during work, so there most probably occured a head crash. Some parts of the platters are defect for sure. Is it reasonable to believe that the controller itself is having a 'problem', meaning is not working as designed? Would not a different controller do the same with the same platters?

13:49<mazze>sney it just is that I did read the whole 320GiB disk from backwards (ddrescue supports that), and I could read for hours with 10MiB/s without any problems at all -- and I still can, as long as I don't read from the bad blocks ... makes me think that _that_ part (the disk controller) might not be damaged ... but I might be wrong ...
13:49<sney>yeah, it could theoretically be anything, every break is different. but it's not something you're going to solve in software

15:21<babilen>nemanja: The other option is to mirror certain parts of the official Debian repositories complete, which would also include a plethora of packages you will probably never install.

17:33<andrew>I was just working on my fstab in the terminal ahahah
17:34<foreverska>lol thought it was a weird request
17:34<andrew>wait, so you're a mix of both testing -and- unstable?
17:35<andrew>and squeeze...
17:35<andrew>=\ this was going to blow up one time or another
17:35<foreverska>from my understanding SID doesn't get security updates and I have no idea what that squeeze stuff is honestly
17:35-!-pitelpan [] has quit []
17:36<andrew>well stable (which is wheezy, squeeze is old-stable) is where the most efforts go there, testing gets updates as well
17:36<andrew>so you have a very old system mixed with the testing system with the unstable (does break) system
17:37<andrew>and from your error, it looks like you have leftovers from when multi-arch was done for amd64 systems, because not everything was totally available in 64bit yet
17:37<foreverska>I'm dropping squeeze until I can figure out why it was there. But do I update the security to sid?
17:37<andrew>well let me get to my point aha ;)
17:37<sney>upgrade everything to testing/sid or reinstall
17:38<sney>otherwise you'll keep having "fun" with apt
17:38<andrew>this one error is not going to be the end of errors-- your best bet aside from a reinstall is to try to downgrade it all to testing, or upgrade it all to sid
17:38<andrew>sney: dammit!
17:38<andrew>!beer snid
17:38*dpkg pours a pint of Green Flash IPA for snid
17:38<sney>good thing you typed my name wrong, that green flash probably tastes like acid

17:40<andrew>regardless-- foreverska it's really your choice, removing everything except the jessie or the sid-- beg someone on here to tell you how to remove the packages from the other architectures because I can't remember, and then try to do a dist-upgrade
17:40<andrew>foreverska: or just reinstall to a testing-only, and remember this lesson ;)

17:45<andrew>foreverska: try playing around in aptitude's gui for a bit, it might help you track down and remove things. but the only real way is a bit of bash scripting that strips all the packages you don't want with dpkg, and then a apt upgrade

17:51<andrew>foreverska: this is a dpkg job, I think there's too much mixing that's already happened for it to be fixed any other way. you have to get dpkg to list the stuff from the archs you don't want, remove them, and then upgrade. if you're wise you'll have an actual cd or other source for the version of debian you want, to be able to move to those pkgs without assistance of apt, because it will likely break during this process
17:52-!-ph0b0s [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
17:52<andrew>that's all I can say, good luck, research those utilities thoroughly, and don't mix debian releases--if you really need packages from one, really best to compile and make your own debs

23:08<us`0gb>My DVD is supposedly in use, so it won't eject and won't burn. Any ideas on how to fix this?
23:09<acald3ron>i download clementine app from google play store so i can connect to my desktop computer but there ir a version problem, the app only support 1.2.1 and jessie is 1.2 !
23:09<somiaj>us`0gb: do you have it mounted? have you cd'd into a directy inside the mount or running any file form it?
23:11<us`0gb>somiaj: I don't know how to check to see if it's mounted, but if it is, it shouldn't be. I've done nothing with it besides put it in the drive and attempt a burn with Xfburn.
23:11<somiaj>us`0gb: well you can type mount or df to see if it is mounted,
23:11<somiaj>us`0gb: have you tried the command 'eject'

23:16<us`0gb>ananth123: The door is so small I don't see a way to do that, but I just ejected the drive itself. Assuming it hot plugs, perhaps it will work now. If not, I'll have to reboot anyway which should clear up any lock on it.
