00:21<johnsmith41>Hi, I am having a problem with my flash player (GNASH or Lightspark), where when I play interactive .swf games, they either flash awkwardly or skip through frames without stopping.
00:21<johnsmith41>I have tried running both from the web and from a local .swf file
00:23<johnsmith41>I am running Debian 7.5 on a Dell Latitude D410

00:39<jmcnaught>johnsmith41: i've also only had limited success with gnash, and even less with lightspark. i think the unfortunate truth is that neither implementation is completely compatible with real flash
00:39<johnsmith41>So is there a different program that works better/at all?
00:41<jmcnaught>johnsmith41: well flash kind of sucks that way. you can use adobe flash, but that means installing non-free software on a system that pro Free software
00:42<johnsmith41>How would I go about getting adobe flash?
00:42<phillipsjk>Unfortunately I have not found a way to switch between that and the free players (disabling one seems to disable all in iceweasel)
00:42<johnsmith41>I forgot to mention, I am using Google Chrome, in case that helps any
00:43<phillipsjk>!pepper flash
00:43<dpkg>Pepper Flash Player is a proprietary <flash> plugin included with the Google Chrome web browser. The pepperflashplugin-nonfree <contrib> Debian package (in <testing> and <wheezy-backports>) can be used to install this plugin for the <Chromium> browser.
00:45<johnsmith41>But I thought you said it was included with Chromium already...?
00:45<phillipsjk>Chrome is not chromium.
00:45<johnsmith41>oh, open source vs. closed source?
00:46<johnsmith41>Ah, that makes more sense.
00:46<johnsmith41>Is there a way to set Pepper Flash as the default flash player instead of whatever it is using right now (I think GNASH)?
00:46<phillipsjk>Chrome is mostly open-source, AFIAK. (thus the existence of chromium)
00:47<phillipsjk>You may have to uninstall gnash if simply installing pepper does not work.

00:48<jmcnaught>i think chromium no longer has the netscape plugin api that gnash is probably using, that's why flashplugin-nonfree no longer works for it and the pepper flash plugin was required

01:10<jmcnaught>johnsmith41: don't forget the main /etc/apt/sources.list. also it's easier for us to open if you include the http:// of the URL
01:11<johnsmith41>ah these files DO have ubuntu repos in them
01:11<phillipsjk>browser hide that by default these days :P
01:12<dpkg>A suitable /etc/apt/sources.list for Debian 7 "Wheezy" has three lines: "deb wheezy main" "deb wheezy/updates main" "deb wheezy-updates main". Be sure to run «aptitude update» after editing sources.list. Also see <deb-src> <contrib> <non-free> <wheezy/updates> <wheezy-updates> <mirrors> <apt-spy> and "man sources.list".
01:12<jmcnaught>phillipsjk: on iceweasel at least, even though it's hidden if you double click then ctrl+c it includes the http:// part
01:13<phillipsjk>Maybe chrome/chromium doesn't do that.

08:54<zsero>hi, I’d like to ask a bit of help with debian. I’ve installed debian wheezy as virtualbox guest, and I have the following problem. when I installed it as a default desktop with gui, the audio was working fine. however I preferred to install it as a minimalistic netinstall and only install lxde-core + lightdm, and this way I don’t have any audio. can you tell me what is needed to have a working audio on a minimal debian system?

08:56<jens_>zsero, I suppose alsa-base and pulseaudio
08:56*centrx audio works without alsa-base or pulseaudio
08:56<jens_>My life's been a lie
08:57<centrx>!alsa checklist
08:57<dpkg>1) add yourself to the 'audio' group (log out & in again) 2) unmute and raise channels w/ alsamixer (also try muting some & toggle jack sense if available) 3) <pulseaudio> or other daemon stopped? 4) speakers on? 5) does "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav" work for root? 6) purge any installed <oss4> packages to remove ALSA blacklist. See also <list alsa users>, <alsa firmware>.

In my research i found out that i need debian 8. Currently i run debian 7.5. What are the downsides or dangers to switch to debian 8? (I read on the wikipedia site that this is alpha version)
14:45-!-jens_ [] has joined #debian
14:46<sney>debian testing won't be called "8" until it's released. right now it's in development. if you want to use testing, read and get comfortable with finding solutions to issues yourself

14:49<sney>it's not "recommended" per se but it is pretty common
14:50<sney>seriously, read the faq! it's directed at unstable users, but at this point in the development process there's not a ton of a difference between testing and unstable
