21:12<oldlaptop>...never seen that :|
21:12<kimberlyw>Context - new debian 7 servers on Rackspace create this user, support could not give definitive answer - they just had me create another instance and declared all well when the new one did it too.

21:17<sney>kimberlyw: vps/server providers often have weird customizations in their OS images
21:17<sney>support may not know about it if it was the decision of some other engineer at the company
21:18-!-Morou [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:18<kimberlyw>That's what I want to believe it is - just a Rackspace thing. Just odd though - they never did it before and I can't figure out why it would be necessary to create a user in /home.
21:19<oldlaptop>linode doesn't do garbage like that, or so they say
21:19<oldlaptop>they're also expensive
21:19<kimberlyw>Although, if it were something malicious I would think it wouldn't be so obvious.
21:19-!-trapier2 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:20<sney>linode does have a bizarro pointless custom kernel, and hilarity ensues if you run 'aptitude -f install' on a new image... or it used to, I don't remember if they fixed it
21:20<oldlaptop>their malicious stuff is much better hidden :P
21:20<sney>fwiw, digital ocean is pleasantly stock as far as I could tell
21:21<oldlaptop>VPS providers can do whatever they want to you, even more so that with a physical server
21:21<oldlaptop>if they want to do something malicious it doesn't even have to be in the VM where you can see
21:22<kimberlyw>I suppose so, just being overly paranoid
21:22-!-james41382 [] has joined #debian
21:23<oldlaptop>it's not paranoia if they're out to get you! ;)
21:23<sney>chsh debian -s /bin/false would still be a good idea, probably
21:23<sney>and set the password to some random 128-bit string
21:23<sney>(or remove it altogether)
21:24<kimberlyw>I was going with removing - didn't cause a problem on the test server

22:48<_Max>Hi, I just installed Debian for the first time using partitions 4 and 5 (1 and 2 are for Windows 7).
22:48<_Max>When booting to Windows, Windows now wants me to run a chkdsk.
22:48<_Max>(The HDD is quite new, shouldn't be failing).
22:48<_Max>I skipped that and the Windows event viewer says the NTFS filesystem is corrupt on partitions 4 and 5.
22:48<_Max>These partitions are where Debian is installed. As far as I know, Debian doesn't use NTFS.

22:55<SamB>what I'm wondering is why the heck your partitions would be set up so Windows thinks that they ARE supposed to be NTFS
