01:40<jm_>mattcen: didn't you run "chroot desktop apt-get install linux-image-amd64 -t wheezy-backports"?
01:42-!-twb [~twb@] has joined #debian
01:43<mattcen>Yes. I've a script that performs the debootstrap and then installs some extra stuff, including that apt-get install.
01:45<jm_>yeah and when doing that make sure environment for apt-get is sane
01:45<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>. Also works for EFI!
01:45<jm_>look at that for hints
01:45<mattcen>jm_: This exact same script worked fine last week.
01:45<mattcen>*Today* with a newer kernel, it's broken.
01:46<jm_>mattcen: yeah like I said, try fixing the above and then run it manually
01:46<twb>The same script worked two weeks ago when linux-image-amd64 in wheezy-backports was installing linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.1-amd64 Version: 3.14.12-1~bpo70+1
01:46<jm_>twb: do you still have it so we could compare postinst scripts?
01:46*twb digs it out
01:47<twb>jm_: at first glance it feels like linux-image-3.14 has added an undeclared dependency on perl-modules (which is Priority: standard, so could have happened without many people noticing)
01:47<twb>(For File/, if that wasn't obvious already)
01:48*jm_ slaps himself. i looked at the old postinst :)
01:48-!-scott1 [~scott@] has joined #debian
01:48<jm_>yeah they added File::stat dependency
01:49<twb> is the postinst from a working one built on 2014-07-17
01:49-!-ninlith [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:49<twb>OK so I can fix the immediate issue by explicitly installing perl-modules when I install the kernel (rather than later -- other stuff would surely pull it in).
01:50<jm_>yeah and in new one they added use File::stat; as mattcen said
01:50<twb>But against which package do I report a bug to add Depends: perl-modules
01:50<jm_>this exactl kernel package?
01:51<twb>OK. Wasn't sure if it was a bit weird for kernels, because they have changing names and stuff
01:51<jm_>the backports page says to use the debian-backports mailing list
01:52<jm_>quick look at archives on the web suggests no-one reported it yet
01:52-!-xakz [] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
01:53<twb>Can I use reportbug as well, or will that make the kernel/bpo people grumpy? I guess best would be to just use reportbug and CC the bpo ML

05:17<us`0gb>I didn't realize Aptitude had tags. Sweet! As for Wine, that's usually for nonfree games, right? If it's free, there's usually a port.
05:17<twb>The free RPGs I've seen tend to be pretty low quality. There are lots of kinda-not-really legal abandonware RPGs from old consoles.

05:51<dpkg>i heard debtags is a way of categorising packages with tags (facets) that describe how a package can be used, what data it can read/write, what interfaces it has etc. This adds another dimension to package searching. Install the debtags package, then search either using "debtags" or "aptitude". Search (or add new tags) at . See also or ask me about <aptitude search>.

09:13<SynrGy>you may have permission to become root, but that's something else :)
09:13<gappuser>ok.. so I need to do it in some other way
09:14<SynrGy>why? you're testing if tomcat6 can write ...

09:14<gappuser>ideally I would like to change to user tomcat6

13:05<oldlaptop>KickDown: You probably are better off encrypting your whole disk, if that's how you feel

19:34<InevBetrayal>Brigo: I want to configure a static IP for the machine
19:36<Brigo>InevBetrayal, you can use ifconfig command: ifconfig eth0 up, for example
19:37<InevBetrayal>Brigo, and that will persist through rebooting? i have it running with DHCP so i can connect to it, but i read that for the static ip to work it has to be done at boot option
19:39<Brigo>InevBetrayal, no,it will not persist and no, you do not need to select the static ip on boot, you can change it when you want.

19:40<InevBetrayal>Brigo, my goal is to have the same IP even in the event of a reboot though
19:40<Brigo>But a live system is not intended to work with static ips, it was made to fit in many networks as possible.
19:40<Brigo>InevBetrayal, are you using network-manager ?
19:41<InevBetrayal>I am not
19:41<InevBetrayal>I tried changing the /etc/network/interfaces file, but it stayed the same
19:42<jmcnaught>InevBetrayal: Debian Live images have a persistence feature: but you could also maybe configure your router to always give that MAC address the same IP address (which is outside the scope of this channel)
19:43<InevBetrayal>jmcnaught: i am running the live image with persistence though. i'll look into the router way, thanks for the suggestion
19:44<jmcnaught>InevBetrayal: you can also install Debian to a USB stick or external hard drive the same way you'd install it normally, as an alternative to using the Live image all the time

23:01<twb>I guess it could be worse
23:01<uso>not bad for the start :)
23:02<twb>I cheated a bit with -o -4

23:05<uso>SamB: the real beauty of network tables is gone soon anyway when you have gotten IPv6 and kernel/udev generated interface names :S
23:05-!-koollman [samson_t@] has joined #debian
23:06<SamB>uso: why would the interface names be kernel-generated?
23:06<SamB>I think only my *actual* devices have udev-generated names ;-P
23:07<uso>SamB: hardware related, like from onboard PCI bus, add-on cards, ... it's already default in RHEL7 I think
23:07<twb>SamB: he means like klibc and kdbus
23:07<uso>no more eth0 by default

23:08<twb>uso: so what do you have instead. I presume not just "en0"
23:08<SamB>uso: also, udev seems to persist the names
23:08<SamB>so I think you can rename them to whatever you want actually
23:08<twb>SamB: that is best practice around here
23:08<twb>obs. my pastes :P
23:09<uso>twb: yes, remembered that as I saw your paste
23:10<SamB>uso: anyway back when it locked in the names it was still using the old style naming here
