01:26<SmitySmiter>just the whole HDD (500) GB
01:26<jm_>you can use advanced mode in the installer and partition manually
01:26<SmitySmiter>jm_ I think I am using that, chose "Manual partition", but can't see any partition under my HDD
01:27<SmitySmiter>could it be because it has an undetected partition (exFAT)?

01:34<jm_>artition table entries are not in disk order
01:35<jm_>maybe that's what confuses it
01:35<jm_>who/what created such a partition table?
01:35<SmitySmiter>but I previously had a Debian Wheezy installtion which worked fine (untill a few weeks ago when I messed up something)
01:36<terravires>does anyone else have suggestions on how to install on a GPT (3TB) drive? I've tried about 13 different installs, none work. UEFI, legacy, grub-pc, grub-efi, bios reserved partitions + efi parts.
01:36<SmitySmiter>I created the partitions

01:53<jm_>SmitySmiter: just partitions 3 and on, btw, why do you think existing isnstall is unusable?>
01:53<SmitySmiter>I created a live USB from Debian, using Unetbootin
01:54<maldridge>if gnome is replicating panel items after I set up xinerama, is there a good place to start debugging that?
01:54<jm_>I don't know about EFI in installer but my brother didn't have much trouble installing grub-efi on his EFI system (the only problem was he had to uopgrade to testing - which then became wheezy - at the time)
01:54<SmitySmiter>restarted, it said "incorrect/corrupted kernel", so I canceled and boom!
01:54<jm_>you should be able to fix that with a live usb

01:54<SmitySmiter>but I wanted to reinstall my Debian installation
01:55<SmitySmiter>since I had messed it up
01:55<SmitySmiter>would become extremely slow after a few hrs of continuous use, all the system log appeared in the terminal etc..
01:55<SmitySmiter>all this started when I tried to install Fandango icons :| (along with it, I must have done some other stupid shit)
01:55<SmitySmiter>was just trying to make it look pretty
01:55<jm_>sounds like kernel panics perhaps
01:56<SmitySmiter>nope, after installing the said theme/icon-set, it started to lag, i looked up "how to optimize" saw somewhere I could disable logging
01:57<SmitySmiter>and then voila! every single shit inside terminal

02:09<jm_>SmitySmiter: I never used gnome3 but I haven't heard of anyone here complaining about lag - I use simple window managers that allow me to work with a keyboard so I don't care about aesthetics much
02:10<SmitySmiter>all right, thanks anyway :)
02:11<jm_>have you checked memory/swap usage when it started lagging? compared it to "before" when it hasn't lagged?

02:11<terravires>Is there anyone else that could please help with UEFI + GPT + RAID install? Details here
02:13<jm_>you could certainly try xfce or lxde if you want something lighter (or even gnome in classic mode)
02:13<SmitySmiter>terravires, are you trying to dual boot or just debian?
02:13<terravires>SmitySmiter, only debian
02:13<SmitySmiter>Gnome classic mode = doesn't have all those nice features of Gnome3
02:14<terravires>been trying to get this working for days. :(
02:15<SmitySmiter>umm, you might have, but did you try searching for tutorials?

12:46<mjrosenb>ls -l /bin/bash; ldd /bin/bash?
12:46<DunGoofedUp>very very odd :'(
12:46<DunGoofedUp>rwxr-xr-x root root /bin/bash
12:47<DunGoofedUp>ldd shows linux-vdso.1 /lib64/
12:47<DunGoofedUp>same as my other machine
12:47<mjrosenb>is / mounted noexec?
12:48<DunGoofedUp>good thinking, but no it isn't
12:48<mjrosenb>(root shouldn't be able to run anything then)
12:48<mjrosenb>/bin/bash permission denied is something printed by a program?
12:49<DunGoofedUp>yeah, write()
12:49<mjrosenb>write is the syscall, not the program.
12:49<mjrosenb>with -f, it should print the pid before every syscall.
12:50<DunGoofedUp>it does...
12:50<mjrosenb>actually, I'd just scroll back and look for perm
12:50<DunGoofedUp>it never changes, indicating that su never forks
12:50<mjrosenb>since there is a good chance that permission was denied /somewhere/
12:51<DunGoofedUp>"perm" pattern not found
12:51<mjrosenb>this may also be an issue where you can't strace across a uid-changing exec?
12:51<DunGoofedUp>might be
12:51<mjrosenb>DunGoofedUp: you probably want a case insensitive search
12:51<DunGoofedUp>but I don't think so because I see the write() for the error message
12:52<DunGoofedUp>good point, sec
12:52<mjrosenb>DunGoofedUp: that would get printed after the exec already failed.
12:52<mjrosenb>you can also try su strace bash.

16:35<Mikecom32>Hey everyone. I'm a bit Debian green, and I'm having some trouble figuring out how to update a package that isn't being maintained. The project has stopped updating their Debian package (they build for Fedora normally I think) and now I'm stuck with a really old version. I tried cloning the git and reading the files in debian.upstream to figure out the install, but I ended up just breaking what I had. I reverted to a snapshot (thank you VMware), and

16:40<obeardly>It does sometimes, but it's worth a shot if it's already been broken via trying to build with source

21:17*SamB_laptop wonders what makes the volume-control keys on his laptop actual change volume, and if it should really be manipulating the ALSA-level mixer ...
21:18<somiaj>what desktop?
21:18-!-lofejndif [] has quit [Quit: gone]
21:18<somiaj>most likely they have a keybinding that runs a script to change the alasmixer level
21:19<SamB_laptop>honestly I don
21:19<SamB_laptop>er, don
21:19<SamB_laptop>gah return stop that
21:19<SamB_laptop>don't even know if it's treated as a normal key ...
21:21<somiaj>it is, run 'xev' and hit the key, you will see it has a name associated with it
21:23<SamB_laptop>hmm, those particular keys don't show up like normal keys :-(
21:23<somiaj>on my system they do, you will get lots of output lines in xev but I belive you will see a keyname that is reasonable. I'd have to turn on my laptop to see what mine are called
21:26<SamB_laptop>on mine I seem to get a FocusOut, a FocusIn, and a KeymapNotify but no proper KeyPress/KeyRelease events
21:27-!-mode/#debian [+l 638] by debhelper
21:27<SamB_laptop>I do get those for some similar keys, like XF86AudioPlay, though
21:28-!-calisto1 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:30<somiaj>yea I am not getting xev to tell me the keyname either, but my keybindings in fvwm work when attached to they key 'XF86AudioLowerVolume' and 'XF86AudioRaiseVolume' so it seems my laptop is responding to those keys correctly, I know I got them from xev at one time (though it was a different alptop) not sure why it sin't returning that info now
21:34<somiaj>SamB_laptop: ahh I see why you dont' get anyting in xev, when I remove my keybindings I get xev giving me proper keypress events when I don't xev doesn't because fvwm has grabed the key event and it isn't sent to the xev window
21:35<somiaj>that is probabaly what is happening with you, xfce has a keybinding for that key and it is grabing the event so xev never gets it and thus you don't see it work like a proper key though it is

22:13<lsp>hi, can anyone tell me how to install emacs24 on squeeze? i keep getting a "broken packages" error
22:13<somiaj>,v emacs24
22:13<judd>Package: emacs24 on i386 -- wheezy-backports: 24.3+1-4~bpo70+1; jessie: 24.3+1-4+b1; sid: 24.3+1-5
22:14<somiaj>lsp: how did you try to install it? Where did you get the package, did you set up the wheezy-backports source correctly and are you running wheezy?
22:14<lsp>somiaj, apt-get install emacs24. but i did not add wheezy backports
22:15<lsp>disregard that, i actually have wheezy-backports in sources.list
22:16<somiaj>emcas24 is not in wheezy, you to enable wheezy-backports and then say 'apt-get -t wheezy-backports emacs24'
22:16<somiaj>arg -- apt-get -t wheezy-backports install emacs24
22:17<lsp>ok - so i need to specify -t wheezy-backports when installing anything from backports?
22:17<lsp>ok, cool. Thanks :)
