03:51<babilen>iamrohit7: Sort off, but the graphical interface is simply loaded later in the boot process. That means that you *do* boot to it, but that you simply don't like seeing the textual part of the boot in between. You could install boot splash software such as plymouth that would hide that information from you with a supposedly nicer picture or animation.
03:52<iamrohit7>babilen : in ubuntu or any other distro i don't see it. why in debian?
03:55<babilen>Because those other distributions decided that "normal" users don't want to see the important messages that are displayed during boot. They simply configure a lot more for you under the assumption that they can approximate your wishes to a sufficiently high degree. Debian doesn't do that, but that doesn't mean that you cannot configure your system the way you want to. (quite the contrary)

06:03<appas>Guest640: look for raspbian

06:08<SynrGy>take note that's on freenode, not this network

06:45<larjona>Hi everybody. I have my Debian Jessie in my laptop, and I had some free space in the disk so I decided to install another Jessie in the free space, for tests. That 2nd jessie I dind't wanted to have desktop, only a minimal install. The installer suggested to install grub in my disk, I said ok, and everything went perfect, except that my grub now is ugly-blue instead of having the official Jessie Lines theme. How can I have my GRUB with "
06:45<larjona>lines"aspect again?

06:47<valdyn>larjona: you want to have grub maintained from your primary jessie
06:48<valdyn>larjona: so run "dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc" there. IT should find the secondary and also reinstall the previous grub. (with whatever looks it had there)
06:48<larjona>great valdyn, thanks

13:41<grindhold_>what is the current status on this issue with the wnpp-queries not working? (
13:41<judd>Bug in python-debianbts (forwarded, patch): «reportbug: crashes on BTS query returning "HTTPError 500 Internal Server Error"»; severity: important; opened: 2015-06-17; last modified: 2015-07-14.
13:41<Jabbi>oh thank you.
13:42<somiaj>grindhold_: the current status will be in the bug report.
13:42<somiaj>i.e. any workarounds and discussion shoud be there. Once it is fixed the matainer marks it as closed and puts that info in the report.
13:42<grindhold_>somiaj: put another way: is there any other possibility to file an ITP bug that does not involve querybts?
13:43-!-mookins [] has quit []
13:43<appas>so i found the default, i think: /etc/skel/.config/openbox/rc.xml. but it's not in there, either. nothing about muting.
13:43<somiaj>grindhold_: I don't know what you mean by ITP bug, but reportbug isn't working I assume? You can just mail the bts directly, all report bug does is first check the bts, then format the email. But tells you how to format the email.
13:44<somiaj>appas: anything in /etc/skel only gets copied to the home directory for a new user, this won't be default or something openbox reads during startup
13:44<grindhold_>somiaj: thx, so i will do that
13:45<paxmark9>for editing openbox keybindings I like using xmlcopyeditor of the .../openbox/rc.xml

13:50<somiaj>appas: another thought, does openbox have some volume applet in a system tray or the likes to control your volumes?
13:50<somiaj>also you may want to ask in an openbox channel (there may be one on freenode) as they may have better tricks for tracking down this keybinding
13:51<paxmark9>edit for viewing openbox keybindings I like using xmlcopyeditor to view the nested structure easier.

21:36<rhostat>rbrito: Then an update is needed.
21:36<markybob>nope. i'll do it for you. /msg me. really
21:36<rbrito>rhostat, I maintain a package that is already a set of scripts (see, but it doesn't work (yet) with FUSE filesystems (see bug and it has issues with udisks2.
21:36<judd>Bug in usbmount (open, help): «usbmount: Can't mount ntfs drive (Transport endpoint is not connected)»; severity: grave; opened: 2014-12-29; last modified: 2015-07-17.
21:37<sheogorath_>anyone good with remote desktop?

21:37<rhostat>rbrito: Looks like you have a few wanting to help out...
21:37<rbrito>I was hoping that udisks2 would be a replacement for my set of scripts, but it seems that it is not....
21:38<markybob>sheogorath_, which one?
21:39<rhostat>rbrito: Track down a good script writer and you'll be good.
21:39<sheogorath_>that's going to the basis of my question. Just put Debian on my work rig, and am looking for a way to remote into the windows partition on the same pc.

21:41<rbrito>rhostat, I still have hope to kill usbmount from Debian and see udisks2 take its role, even for embedded devices.

21:42<sheogorath_>markybob, I considered that, but haven't tried it before. this is the first work pc I've been able to try this on.
21:42<markybob>sheogorath_, it's really, super easy. install it, then /msg me or text your message in here. 99% of us know how to do that
21:44<rhostat>rbrito: I'd imagin it would be (stay as) an addition instead of a replacement for backward compatibility. The powers that be will decide that I'm sure.

21:54<twb>Until now I haven't worried, but I was testing jessie on a desktop last week and I noticed that it took an extra 2min to boot because systemd was waiting for the firmware to load
21:55<abrotman>twb: do you care if the box is non-free?
21:55<twb>(Maybe my servers do that too and I just hadn't noticed.)
21:55<twb>abrotman: a bit. I guess what I'm really asking is: what's the downside of omitting the non-free firmware?
21:55<abrotman>twb: some drivers still work, just in a degraded way. others won't function at all. Do you use that device?
21:56<twb>I must be using it because that's how I ssh in

23:12<ryouma>how do i manually create an initramfs? i tried find . | cpio -o | gzip -c > but it did not boot, saying bad cpio magic
23:12<twb>I don't know what "linux kids" is.
23:12<twb>ryouma: -Hnewc
23:12<ryouma>reason for doing this: my initramdisk contains the wrong conf.d/cryptroot. it seems update-initramfs did not update it. i ahve no idea
23:12<twb>The reason I'm not using crypted root is because the initramfs scripts for crypsetup made me go "oh. my. gods."
23:13<twb>ryouma: linux only supports one cpio format, and it's not the default in GNU cpio
23:13<twb>ryouma: IIRC it's newc, but it might be the one with no checksum
23:13<twb>ryouma: details should be in /usr/sbin/mkinitrd and also in kernel Documentation/ tree
23:13<ryouma>perhaps you can tell me why update-initramfs would silently not update cryptroot?
23:14<twb>ryouma: no sorry, I drank away those memories
23:14*ryouma so very much doesnot want to be debugging his boot process
23:15-!-corey84- [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:15<twb>ryouma: IIRC when you run update-initramfs the /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/scripts/crypsetup script tries to work out which (if any) LUKS dm is used for the root filesystem, then add *only* that one to crypttab on the ramdisk
23:15<ryouma>twb: i found "cpio --quiet -R 0:0 -o -H newc 4>&-; echo "ec2=$?;" >&4" in sbin/mkinitramfs
23:15<twb>Cool so -Hnewc is the right option. Pity they're not using --null :-/
23:16<ryouma>(whatever that means. dunnow what all that redirection stuff is for or whether -R is nec)
23:17<twb>ryouma: >&4 will be the same weirdness you see in dpkg where they faff about with redirects to implement IPC
23:17<ryouma>um, no clue
23:17<twb>ryouma: just ignore it
23:17<ryouma>but i'll just ignore it
23:17<ryouma>is -R 0:0 necessary?
23:17<ryouma>that's user group apparently
23:18<twb>find -print0 | cpio --create --null -Hnewc | gzip -9c >initrd-3.16-...
23:18<twb>ryouma: it won't hurt, not sure if it's needed

23:18<twb>ryouma: you could also instead of making it manually, teach initramfs-tools to do what you need
23:18<twb>ryouma: but that probably involves more learning
23:19<ryouma>yeah that would be a lot better but it would also be teaching it to dowhat it should have done in the first place, which means possibly screwing it up even more or something
23:20<twb>I kinda want to go on a -0 bug-filing rampage now
23:20<twb>"initramfs-tools: breaks when path contains newline" etc.

23:25<ryouma>yeah, and in my case, it just breaks by not updating cryptroot, yet returning silently
23:26<ryouma>so you end up in an initrd shell instead of booting. not that many people know what to do in an initrd shell.
