00:23<ryouma>what is the latest iceweasel recommended practice? if you are on jessie, do you use jessie's version + jessie's xul-ext-* extensions? do you use the debian mozilla repo? and then you're supposed to merely use extensions? or is there a repo for extensions?
00:24<ryouma>will iceweasel only get security updates on jessie? or will it just get bumped up and the extensions to?

01:36<JJ564464>Hi everyone
01:37<JJ564464>This is about my third installation of Debian! The fault I used to run into was with my Xorg config trying to get bumblebee to work with Geforce GTX 960M on an MSI laptop
01:37<JJ564464>I am now on a fresh install, just installed tlp and intel microcode for power saving
01:37<JJ564464>but I need to know what to do next
01:38<JJ564464>Is my card supported? Someone suggested I add the experimental to my repos
01:38<JJ564464>I understand how to nano /etc/apt/sources.list
01:38<JJ564464>but that is th extent of my knowledge
01:38<Hydroxide>ryouma: grep-dctrl is a package in Debian that's explicitly designed to parse that format, but indeed it's intentionally RFC822-esque and many ad-hoc or third-party solutions can handle it.
01:38<JJ564464>Could someone point me in the right direction
01:38<Hydroxide>ryouma: err, I think the package name is now dctrl-tools
01:39<JJ564464>I know I don't need an Xorg config
01:39<JJ564464>so I dont want to screw that up again
01:40<Hydroxide>JJ564464: I'd suggest you look at and follow the instructions for Jessie (the current Debian stable release)
01:40-!-marcello1 [] has quit [Quit: Sto andando via]
01:40<Hydroxide>JJ564464: it looks like any requirement to go beyond the stable release is out of date, though it's possible something special is needed for your card
01:40<JJ564464>Ah thank you, I have tried that and I will try again on this install and let you know
01:41<Hydroxide>JJ564464: good luck. I may or may not still be watching IRC, but feel free to ask for further help here regardless.
01:41<JJ564464>Do I need the linux headers first?
01:42<JJ564464>Im not sure really what that is I just understand it is a prerequisite for the drivers?
01:42<Hydroxide>JJ564464: you shouldn't need to do more than what's on that wiki page
01:42<JJ564464>alright thanks
01:42<Hydroxide>JJ564464: again, at least not as a first attempt
01:43<Hydroxide>JJ564464: much information on the internet was written before the current Debian stable release from earelier this year, at which point itt may have been more complicated than it is now.
01:43<Hydroxide>JJ564464: the only reasons why anything beyond that would be needed is something hardware-specific beyond Optimus generally.
01:43<JJ564464>okay thanks
01:43<JJ564464>I love Debian so far :p
01:44<JJ564464>just the Xorg config was causing me problems because I didnt need one!
01:44<Hydroxide>great :)

09:32<blu>hi guys. This is openvpn but the #openvpn chan is not answering. I want openvpn client-to-client scale with multiple servers, running multiple openvpn processes. I'm stuck on how servers communicate with each other. If I have 4 VPN instances on Server A, should I just create a client for each VPN on server B? Then for three Servers, I have eight clients only for interconnecting the servers, + 4 actual servers each, so total of 12 openvpn processes
09:32<blu>. that sounds kinda wrong..
09:33<blu>the idea was that for example rsync backups max out one openvpn server running on one cpu. so I used multiple on one machine. now I want this redundant, so I wanted to use multiple vpn processes on multiple servers using the same PKI, but using a different /24 each, so that clients connect at random to them.
09:34<EmleyMoor>In Character Map (regular Gnome desktop), how do I search by character detail in Jessie?
09:35<blu>however if one server has 4 cores and two processes max that out by uploads, it will take 2 more processors to forward this traffic to the destination server, which runs the destination vpn server process

10:38<paxmark9>KOJIbKA, more elegant to first do sudo apt-get autoclean, then if need be sudo apt-get clean. if you have ncdu installed that is helpful also.

12:00<somiaj>JJ564464: what version of debian are you running?
12:01<JJ564464>Hi I am running jessie
12:01<JJ564464>I removed nvidia-bumblebee
12:01<somiaj>JJ564464: you should be able to have nvidia and nouveau side by side, just black list the nvidia driver and change your xorg.conf file
12:01<JJ564464>changed the Driver=nouveau
12:01<somiaj>did you actually install experimential packages on jessie?
12:01<JJ564464>just apped experimental to source list
12:01<somiaj>you should be able to remove the xorg.conf file completely, nouveau should be auto detected
12:01<somiaj>do not add experiemential sources to jessie. This is only asking for hurt
12:02<JJ564464>I actually dont have a xorg.conf file because normally it has caused issues in the past for me
12:02<somiaj>the main thing you may have to check is you remove any black list the nvidia packages put on nouveau, check /etc/modprobe.d and make sure the module isnt' black listed.
12:02<JJ564464>hmm I have never checked that file
12:02<somiaj>yea xorg should auto detect most things. You really only need a small snipit if y ou are using nvidia non-free
12:02<somiaj>instead of changing it to load the nouveau drivers I would just remove either xorg.conf or the snippit in xorg.conf.d/
12:02<JJ564464>but not if you are using bumblebee right?
12:03<somiaj>I'm unsure of anythings special that needs to be done for bumblebee
12:03<JJ564464>yeah nothing is in modprode.d
12:03<JJ564464>and I dont have an xorg.conf
12:03<somiaj>it could be the intel driver ist he one that gets detected and you do have to do something to tell xrog to use the nvidia nouveau driver
12:03<JJ564464>hmm that is probably right
12:03<somiaj>but I'm just talking about clean up. Mkae sure you remove all the non-free nvidia stuff, make sure you remove the blacklist for nouveau, reboot
12:04<somiaj>load xorg
12:04<somiaj>check /var/log/Xorg.0.log, if the intel driver is the one that is being loaded by default you may have to write a small xorg.conf snippit to force it to use nouveau instead. Unsure how well this works as I have never tested it
12:04<JJ564464>ah okay I will look at wiki about blacklist for nouveau
12:04<somiaj>grep nouveau /etc/modprobe.d/* -- that should check for you
12:05-!-magmax [] has joined #debian
12:05<somiaj>also make sure you have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed
12:05<JJ564464>oh okay thanks
12:05<JJ564464>how do I install xserver-xorg-video-noveau
12:05<somiaj>just apt-get install
12:06<somiaj>depending on how you installed your system it most likeyl is already installed (By default xorg will install all the standard video drivers) so it should be more a check than an intsall.
12:06<JJ564464>oh wow just apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
12:06<somiaj>correct, that ist he package name in debian
12:06<JJ564464>thank you
12:07<JJ564464>here is the result of grep nouveau...
12:07<JJ564464>/etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf:# do not automatically load nouveau as it may prevent nvidia from loading
12:07<JJ564464>/etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf:blacklist nouveau
12:07<JJ564464>/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf:blacklist nouveau
12:07<JJ564464>oh wow
12:07<somiaj>JJ564464: that is the blacklist I was talking about. You can probabaly just remove that file
12:07<somiaj>you probabaly need to remove the nvidia-dkms package ro what ever package you used to isntall the nvidia moudle
12:08<JJ564464>oh okay so just cd to that /etc/
12:08<JJ564464>and rm modprode.d?
12:08<somiaj>jsut removinb bumblee won't do that. Taht will rpobabaly remove the blacklist (or as I said they should be able to both be installed, you just need to change configs to make sure nouveau is loaded over nvidia)
12:08<somiaj>do not remove modprobe.d that is a full directory full of stuff about modules
12:08<JJ564464>yeah I dont have nvidia installed at all because I would have to install 352.21 from experimental
12:08<somiaj>remove the thing you want, or just edit the nouveau.conf file and comment out the blacklist options
12:09<JJ564464>okay thanks
12:09<somiaj>something installed that blacklist so you do haev nvidia installed
12:09<JJ564464>so nouveau.conf is in /etc?
12:09<somiaj>no it is in /etc/modprobe.d/
12:09<JJ564464>nano /etc/modprobe.d/?
12:09<somiaj>safest is to just edit that file and put a # character in front of of the blacklist lines
12:09<somiaj>no, it is a directory, modify the files insie of it
12:09<somiaj>the /etc/modprobe.d/* (this was just a short hand for all files)
12:10<JJ564464>sorry how do I get to edit the files inside of it
12:11<JJ564464>I went to cd /etc
12:11<somiaj>with your favorit editor, nano /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf
12:11<JJ564464>oh thanks
12:11<somiaj>ok, now cd modprobe.d (get inside the directory), ls that directory, edit the file you need to edit
12:11<JJ564464>.d symbolizes a directory?
12:12<somiaj>JJ564464: it is just a standard convention for a directory that is full of config snippits (over a single config file)
12:12<somiaj>so instead of having one very large file, modprobe.d/ allows packages to put just the info they want and manage it in sepeate files. You will see this used in lots of config files that have multiple packages wanted to edit them.
12:12-!-whoaski [~whoaski@2601:483:8002:3e42::14] has joined #debian
12:13<somiaj>but /etc is also a directory, /usr/ is also a directory. usually I try to put a slash at the end of a file name to signifiy it is a directory,
12:13<somiaj>but I don't always do that
12:13<JJ564464>oh okay thanks
12:13<JJ564464>so I went to /etc/modprode.d
12:13<JJ564464>then ls
12:13<somiaj>see all the files, edit the one you want
12:13<JJ564464>and saw nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf as one option
12:13<somiaj>that is just a list of all the files, that is the name of the file you want to edit
12:13<JJ564464>so I edited it and there was pretty much only one line that said blacklist nouveau
12:14<JJ564464>so I commented it out
12:14<somiaj>now when you reboot nouveau should auotmoatcaically load
12:14<somiaj>or you can just try 'modprobe nouveau' and see if you can just load it
12:14<JJ564464>as the only option?
12:14<JJ564464>would I want to deal with fbdev-blacklist.conf?
12:15<somiaj>well nvidia and nouveau conflict, so when you installed nvidia, it put that file there to keep nouveau from being loaded by deafult. commenting out that option keeps that file around and makes it not effective (This way if you try to switch back to nvidia at a later time you can just go remove that comment)
12:15<JJ564464>or bumblebee.conf in modprode.d at all?
12:15<somiaj>Unsure about bumblebee, you could see what that file does. I aws just trying to make it so nouveau will be loaded at boot for you which is what you need if you want nouveau

18:25<agaida>my problem is - i've asked if you want a true answer - and that swap will ruin your ssd is bs
18:25<mgv>and that's a good idea if you have a SSD
18:25<jaccob>I think if you do not create a swap, it will create a swap on the root partition
18:25<mgv>jaccob: no, it won't create anything by default if you use manual parititoning
18:26<jaccob>agaida, feel free to ignore me if you are annoyed by me
18:26<jaccob>mgv, hmm, yeah that makes sense, thx
18:26<agaida>one have to write over 40G-60G every day to destroy a modern sdd - over 5-8 years
18:26<mgv>and even if you have created a swap partition by accident you can comment it out (or delete it) from /etc/fstab
18:26<agaida>when the ssd has a decent size
18:27<jaccob>I would try to find a computer that has ssd and hdd. But usually there is only one.
18:27<mgv>I have no idea how many write/erase cycle a modern ssd can do before dying, but swap is practically useless with a decent amount of RAM as long as you don't intend to hibernate it
18:28<jaccob>mgv, I notice that too, even with just 2g ram, you don't really need swap anymore.
18:28<hicks>I have 8GB ram in the comp I use with an ssd and it hardly ever puts anything in swap. Total writes to the ssd over the last 6 months are tiny, nowhere near the value needed daily to be a prob.
18:28<hicks>Not sure how much you'd use swap with 4GB though
18:29<jaccob>hicks, so you never did any optimizations then, just a basic/regular install as if it were hdd
18:29<mgv>I have 4GB RAM and no swap. No problem with this setup
18:29<hicks>with smartctl you can monitor how much has been written to the ssd and get an idea of whether you're going to run into long term issues

19:40<veshi>I'm trying to create a system that will be used to upgrade and/or roll back to various system images.
19:41<veshi>I haven't yet worked out exactly how to create a "container" for these images that just has a bootloader and a partition table.

19:42<petrucci>Probably a bit over my head, but what about something in the likes of what clonezilla does?

19:44<petrucci>If you just need the bootloader and the partition table, can't you just dd them to a file. For images with unallocated space sparce files work nicelly.
19:45<veshi>Yup -- that's exactly what I want to do. I'm just having trouble getting that to work. =)
19:46<veshi>For example -- after creating an image file, how do I install the bootloader?
19:46<petrucci>Yes, I saves the mbr into a binary file, each partition in another, separated file(possibly compressed). and then in recovery time changes its value accordingly to the destiny system.
19:47<petrucci>You mean a saved bootloader? From a file to a live system?
19:48<petrucci>Probably relevant:

19:49<petrucci>The mbr( modern UEFI system differ) contains the bootstrap(pointing to the bootloader) and the partition table. You can save it and recover it with dd (explained in the archwiki link)
19:50<veshi>Yes -- for my purposes, that would probably work. Do you know how to "save it" off the top of your head?
19:50<veshi>I'll continue to dig through the archwiki pages...
19:51<petrucci>the actual bootloader is in a partition. You can also save it with dd or clonezilla( it recognizes the file system and saves you the trouble of saving unallocated space)
19:51<petrucci>sorry, you mean save the mbr?

19:55<petrucci>By executing -- dd if=/dev/sda of=./mbr-backup bs=512 count=1 -- you copy it to a file called mbr-backup
19:56<petrucci>It's fine, I hoppe I can help ( I'm no expert tough )
19:56<veshi>Okay. So, I can create a new file and use something like `parted` to create a partition table and then just shove mbr-backup into it?
19:59<petrucci>You can... But when you shove mbr-backup into the file (since the partition table is in the mbr ) it will write anything you had done with parted. You can however first shove the mbr first and then use parted later if you want
