00:00<Yst>Then manual says that 3 cap_from_text is not available.
00:01<teatime>hrm, that really should have done it...
00:02<teatime>for the man page, you can find it online or it's in the package libcap-dev

00:06<Yst>I am going to try running it on service. Maybe that is the issue.
00:06<vortek>can someone point me too a full install iso that contains firmware for wireless?

00:06<teatime>that is definitely the wrong thing to do.

00:27-!-oalvarez [~alvarezp@2001:470:d:872:8428:b8de:53e0:5091] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:29<Yst>Huh. I told ngIRCd to run as root instead of irc in its configuration, and it downgraded to nobody.
00:29<Yst>I think that the issue is that it is downgrading before binding to a port.
00:29<Yst>will try again to find a way with setcap.

00:44<teatime>Yst: the init.d file probably didn't take effect because that's only used by sysvinit init system but systemd is probably the init system you're actually using
00:45-!-towo^work [] has joined #debian
00:45<teatime>btw, did you know that the default IRC ports are actually above the level considered to be privileged ports?
00:45<teatime>anyone should be able to bind to 6997
00:46-!-tetrapovicc [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:46<teatime>I think privileged ports are still those <1024, maybe 4096 but I don't think so.
00:46<teatime>maybe there's some other reason you can't bind, like specifying the wrong addr?
00:46<Yst>The default is client-specific. Some use 9999 by default, others use 6697.
00:46<Yst>WeeChat uses 6667 by default for both encrypted and decyrpted.
00:47<Yst>For the "ircs" URI scheme though, the default is 994.
00:47<teatime>huh, lame
00:47<teatime>I guess it makes sense to put it in the priv'd range though

00:49<Yst>I will look that up.
00:49<Yst>Yeah, 194.
00:50<Yst>It was too hard to bind to that though, so they switched it.
00:50<Yst>But people never think that regular users are going to want encryption ...
00:50<teatime>well, putting it in the priv range makes sense

00:51<teatime>not really
00:52<teatime>if for some reason a daemon that is usually running on 6667 was down, for some reason, any user could impersonate it
00:52<teatime>maybe a user that learned a way to crash it
00:52<teatime>admittedly, not many servers that offer an ircd have untrusted local users.
00:52<Yst>Right, which means that it makes sense to put those in the privileges range too so that they can be trusted.

00:54<teatime>Yst: I've been operating under the assumptiong that your ircd is smart enough to bind before dropping root

Once we have switched the DNS entry and we started to get live traffic (ca. 10 requests per second) the server went down (a small static image that normally takes 0.2s to download - took now ca. 30s). According to `top` the CPU was not overloaded at all, and indeed pages were built pretty fast. The most time was spent waiting for server's response. It looked like the

02:53<Yst>Okay, we have tracked down why setcap works on my friend's system but not mine. I run ngIRCd as root, then it downgrades itself, then it fails to bind to port 994. He instead runs ngIRCd as a non-root server, it tried to set its user and fails, then successfully binds to port 994. Changing users drops the benefits granted by setcap.

02:56<manpreet>i think the standard irc tls port is 6669
02:56<manpreet>i used inspircd and it used 6669 for tls
02:56<abd32>jm_: I just installed iotop - is there a way to see to which files a process is writing?

02:56<manpreet>iotop will show which process is doing the writing
02:56<teatime>manpreet: there are a lot of different ports commonly used, but Yst proved the 994 thing earlier w/ an RFC :)
02:57<themill>no-one actually uses 994 though -- see for this network
02:57<themill>6697 and 9999
02:57<manpreet>teatime: k :) I just tried setting up some irc clients to use ssl and they defaulted to 6669
02:58<abd32>manpreet: is there a tool that shows also identifies the files?
02:58<Yst>manpreet: The "standard" is kind of fragmented. Each client has its own default. The default set for the "ircs" URI scheme is 994 though. <>
02:58<teatime>although I was going to say, that's just a draft... is there no published RFC for IRCS?

03:00<teatime>the best policy would probably to listen on all of them you know of, which I think is his plan.

03:02<Yst>WeeChat oddly defaults both TLS and non-TLS connections to port 6667. I cannot really support that one ...
03:02<jm_>abd32: not with iotop no, kernel has facility for that or you could strace it
03:02<teatime>Yst: heh, I think I can imagine how it happens to have that behavior

03:03<teatime>abd32: strace is a program that displays the syscalls another program is doing, like open() and write()
03:03<abd32>thank you!
03:04<manpreet>Yst: kvirc defaults to 6669 for ssl and 6667 for non ssl
03:04<teatime>themill: since I'm currently stuck in text mode, what does it give as the answer?
03:04<manpreet>but they are all in that range
03:04<themill>teatime: 6697.
03:05<Yst>themill: I am after the default for the scheme so that I can use a URI with no port, so default IRC ports from other documents are not comparable. I do plan to open up those ports also once I get this working though. Supporting as many client defaults as possible would be good.
03:05<themill>On the basis that all of the top 20 irc networks who offer SSL/TLS do so on 6697.
03:05<Yst>I will offer on port 6697 as well, but that does not mean avoiding offering on port 994.
03:05<Yst>The two are not mutually exclusive.
03:06<manpreet>well 6697 you won't run into bind issue
03:06<themill>except that 994 requires privileges
03:06<manpreet>its a non-privileged port
03:06<themill>Yst: anyway, there is no uri scheme and the uri scheme should not be specifying ports anyway as that is the job for something else
03:06<Yst>True. I have mostly worked through the issue at this point though, it would be a waste to give up now.
03:07<manpreet>or use the time someplace else
03:07<themill>You should always ignore sunk costs.
03:07<manpreet>like maybe authentication
03:07<Yst>themill: According to the list of registered schemes, there is a URI scheme: <>
03:07<manpreet>Yst: everyone is going to use irc clients to connect
03:07<manpreet>and all the clients are going to try connecting to 6697
03:07<Yst>And I will have that port open.

12:49<sney>you can't use apt-get for files on your local hard drive, that's not what it's for. it's ok, they still get registered in the local package database
