04:04-!-T0rch [] has joined #debian
04:05<jmcnaught>shtrb: provide as much information as you can and set the severity level to what you think is appropriate and the package maintainers will make the call. you could also look for the mailing list for the owncloud packagers and alert them there if you don't get a response
04:05<shtrb>jmcnaught ,
04:06<shtrb>it seems that there is some bad blood between the packagers and upstream
04:08<jmcnaught>i don't know anything about that, but reporting a bug for the owncloud package is the way to let maintainers know
04:10<jmcnaught>shtrb: also if you're using testing you should get used to going to #debian-next instead of #debian. Testing is not the best choice for a server, bugs like this (and how long it can potentially take to fix them) are why
04:11<shtrb>jmcnaught , that bug is also for stable version
04:11<jmcnaught>oh cool, well i guess it's good you're reporting it :)
04:14<shtrb>according to the upstream the maintainers are unwilling to fix the situation (as I said bad blood between the two)

04:14<shtrb>I understand both sides in the conflict but I'm stuck with broken software

04:17<jmcnaught>there are *many* web apps that move so fast and don't provide support for older versions that it makes using the debian packages a difficult choice: safe and convenient upgrades vs lots of non-APT upgrades that you have to worry about doing manually or automating some how
04:17<shtrb>jmcnaught , as a dev it is not always possible . I have a system when a bug fix rendered a subsystem redesign ( and backporintg such a thing just cost to much)

06:31<SynrG>xjja: the general approach is to install stable, and use backports
06:31<xjja>FLD: problem is that I would prefer to have debian keep track of bugfixes/security updates for me, so that I don't need to follow it myself and build it all myself
06:31<xjja>SynrG: backports has almost nothing in it :(
06:31-!-stripe [] has joined #debian
06:31<SynrG>xjja: there is no guarantee that a backport is available for each and every thing, but there are many backports
06:32<SynrG>still, it is the recommended approach.
06:32<FLD>xjja: so add the repository to your apt sources?
06:32<SynrG>when you mix in things from third-party sources, you can't always guarantee good results for upgrades.
06:32<SynrG>so this is not recommended.
06:32<SynrG>that being said, some upstreams have a good reputation for high quality newer versions of packages
06:32<xjja>FLD: I prefer to just use debian repositories. I have more trust in debian, than in other 3rd parties to not mess up my system.
06:33-!-sUbMuNdO [] has joined #debian
06:33<SynrG>xjja: and finally, there is always attempting to make a backport yourself for missing things ...
06:33<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
06:33<FLD>then you get to enjoy some old version of weechat
06:33<SynrG>right. can't have your cake and eat it too :)
06:33<FLD>the software is a security nightmare as it is
06:34<xjja>FLD: what do you mean?
06:35<xjja>SynrG: I've read about backporting it myself, I think that's the way I will have to go. I was just hoping that somebody already did a debian version of what I'd like.
06:35-!-falice [~falice@] has joined #debian

06:36<xjja>I am just a user, never wrote a line of code in my life :D
06:36<SynrG>xjja: if you don't trust their debs, you can just build the packages from their source, once you've reviewed it
06:36<xjja>though I can follow guides
06:36<SynrG>good time to learn
06:36<FLD>xjja: it has no sandboxing and people run it with user permissions which is almost always way too much rights for a software that is connected to the internet like this
06:37<SynrG>but yes, generally such reviewing is beyond most end users :)

11:12<pekhee>Hi people. I'm trying to install Debian on a late 2013 11,1 MacBook Pro. If I'm not wrong refind or a fork of it is installed on the device as boot loader. Copying a live Debian ISO on a USB stick and booting from it drops to GRUB rescue at "insmod normal" with error "file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.". I think GRUB's prefix is wrong, it's on internal disk and using GRUB's ls there is no device for USB stick.

14:19<MeatHammer>im having some difficulty working with network namespaces in debian. documentation for ip-netns is pretty poor, even man pages. I am trying to return the PID of an exisiting namespace with "sudo ip netns pids jail" (jail being the name of an existing namespace). The command returns nothing, no error, just back to prompt. What am I doing wrong?

22:12<teatime>chris_se: maybe, although IMO it's not very hard and quite useful to learn.
22:12<teatime>chris_se: and in the raid 1 case, the worst case scenario is you screw up or give up, and still have a perfectly normal bootable disk

22:13<chris_se>sure, and for me it's perfectly fine, but I do acknowledge that it's not quite as easy to use as it could be

22:14<chris_se><flaggen_> hi, i'm having some trouble installing on an isw raid0

22:16<chris_se>you mean 0.9 metadata + full disk in RAID1?
22:16<teatime>chris_se: one of the big reasons I tend to go for sw raid in the absence of a real budget, is that if your controller fails, the only thing you need to access your data is ANY linux PC you can connect your disks to

22:19<chris_se>teatime, well, it does do some things special
22:19<teatime>I think you misunderstood me
22:20<chris_se>because typically newer RAID metadata is at the beginning of a partition (to make sure that other software doesn't see the file system on the individual drives)
22:20<teatime>I was just saying that in a rescue situation, you don't need drivers for your raid in order to access your data
