04:24<guiniol>Hello all! Not sure if this is the right channel, but I need help creating a kernel module + binaries package. I'm using dh-make but I don't understand what the directory structure should be in the case where I have a kernel module and also binaries.
04:24<guiniol>can anyone tell me how the tarball should be laid out in that case? or point me to some documentation mentioning this?
04:27-!-faw [] has joined #debian
04:27<Guest6173>Ill see if I can find something relating to this on google, thats my best bet for now
04:29<Guest6173>Some Possibly useful resources : This one seems more specific
04:30<Guest6173>And this might be even closer
04:30<jm_>simply put them in separate packages
04:31-!-Miho [] has quit []
04:31<guiniol>Guest6173: thanks, I already read those links, but I still don't get it
04:31<guiniol>jm_: when in kernel mode, dh-make is supposed to do that automagically
04:32<guiniol>does anyone know of a package which installs a kernel module?
04:32<jm_>guiniol: huh?
04:32<jm_>nvidia/virtualbox dkms packages
04:32<guiniol>jm_: see section "Kernel Module"
04:32-!-blue_sky [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:33<guiniol>I need a compiled kernel module not a dkms one
04:33<Guest6173>you may end up having to deal with Kernel images then
04:34<guiniol>jm_: thanks for the nvidia idea, there is precompiled package
04:34<guiniol>Guest6173: what do you mean?
04:35<guiniol>nvidia doesn't work... I need a package where the source is available but is still distributed as a compiled module. I'll check virtualbox
04:37<Guest6173>Humm Do you mean a .ko kernel module?
04:39-!-faw [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:40<guiniol>Guest6173: yes
04:40<Guest6173>Also you may be stuck with the nouveau drivers, since the Nvidia drivers are Closed source
04:40<Guest6173>nouveau work quite well for videos generally, but are barely good enough for moderate gaming.
04:41<Guest6173>Although this is being gradually fixed
04:41<guiniol>I would like a package which includes a kernel module and also binaries to take as example for packaging my own .ko + binaries
04:41-!-GhostSpirit-fr [] has joined #debian
04:41<guiniol>Guest6173: I'm not looking to use it, just check how it's done ^^
04:42<Guest6173>This is an old article, but I think it may help "Compiling Kernel Modules"
04:42<Guest6173>Need to find something thats for the 3x kernels, as this is for the 2.6 kernel
04:42-!-__z [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:43<guiniol>Guest6173: thanks
04:43<guiniol>I already have a kernel module that compiles
04:43<guiniol>and the associated binaries compile too
04:43<guiniol>I would like to package it for easy distribution (mainly for testing for now)
04:43-!-adb [~ionmoldov@2a02:120b:2c12:70a0:c27c:d1ff:fe35:3dbc] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:44<Guest6173>Ooo then that would be a simular idea to the Ralink drivers? These drivers are installed by Package
04:44<Guest6173>Ill have to check if they are open source though
04:44<guiniol>do you have the package name?
04:45<Guest6173>firmware-ralink Its a driver you can install from Synaptic Package manager or package
04:45<Guest6173>I have had to use it for one of my Wireless cards and its a Very convenient installation.
04:46<Guest6173>But I believe it works by Installing the Firmware into a Library directory on the local computer
04:46<guiniol>no .ko apparently
04:46<Guest6173>Yeaa I will have to dig deeper
04:46<Guest6173>Although the Broadcom Proprietary drivers did install from a .ko file
04:47<Guest6173>But the were Unervingly glitchy
04:47<guiniol>I need an open driver, but out of tree, and access to the source, ideally through 'apt-get source'
04:48<Guest6173>Of course I would think that for Copying a Kernel module into a Distro would be as simple as installing from a Bash file.
04:49<Guest6173> Comes to mind
04:50-!-ununsept [] has joined #debian
04:50-!-ununsept [] has quit []
04:50<Guest6173>So if you simply need to Insert the module, then the insmod command could probably do it. Although I am not certain if .deb packages can run terminal commands
04:51<guiniol>Guest6173: I might have found it: sysdig
04:51<Guest6173>So a root access bash file might be the easiest method.
04:51<guiniol>Guest6173: insmod is for using the module, but I need something that packages the module for easy installation
04:51-!-zyley [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
04:51<Guest6173>And what I am trying to figure out is if a .deb package can run commands within it to insert the module
04:52<Guest6173>As you probally know from the gasp "windows" world installers can run Console commands
04:52<Guest6173>Horrible for security, but makes life easy on developers
04:53-!-viccuad [] has joined #debian
04:53<guiniol>Guest6173: there wouldn't be much point for an installer to insmod a module. The binary using the module should insmod it. Much better, especially after a reboot
04:54<Guest6173>So then you could use a Deb package to Install a Program that Maintains the module and possibly updates it
04:54<guiniol>but that means compiling on the host
04:54<guiniol>and I'd rather avoid installing gcc etc on a prod system
04:54<guiniol>so I want a compiled module
04:54<Guest6173>Not necessarily, there are some scripting languages like Python, Ruby, and some others I am forgetting
04:55<Guest6173>The installer could be using one of these universal languages
04:55<Guest6173>And no compilation is involved thankfully with this method
04:55<guiniol>it'd still need a compiler to update the module, wouldn't it?
04:55<Guest6173>If its being taken from Source code
04:56<Guest6173>Also if it needs special modifications before being applied to the computer.
04:56<Guest6173>But if the module is Pre-compiled it should be as simple as loading a .ko file
04:57<guiniol>but then I need to package it ^^
04:57<guiniol>which is what I'm trying to do
04:57<Guest6173>Python is pre-installed by default on Debian 8 and should be on lower versions as well
04:58<Guest6173>Some Fancy apps are in python, one such example is Quod Libet, its programmed in Python and uses GTK+ calls for interface
04:58-!-mythos [~mythos@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:58<guiniol>I'd rather a .deb so that I can put it in a repo and have people 'apt update/upgrade' to get it
04:59<guiniol>I know, but that's entirely a different problem

04:59<Guest6173>humm thats a strong risk to be honest, because unless everyones machines are properly compatible with the module then an Update may cause some machines to crash
05:00<Guest6173>I know that 3 different versions of Fedora had different amounts of Crashing based upon the Same Broadcom driver
05:01<Guest6173>The Module has to be fairly specific to the Operating system kernel version
05:01<Guest6173>This is why I recommend a Helper Aplication to Test if the workstation is Compatible with the update
05:01<guiniol>I have a driver which compiles. I have a binary which uses that driver and insmod it. Now, what I want is to use debhelper to create two .deb, one for the module, one for the binary. Using dh-make in "Kernel module" mode should enable me to do that. The module can then be updated whenever the kernel is updated without having to reinstall the binary.
05:01-!-ao2 [] has joined #debian
05:02<guiniol>yes, the module needs to be compiled for the right kernel version, but that can be done through dependencies
05:02<guiniol>using apt
05:02<guiniol>which is what I'm hoping to do
05:03<Guest6173>module-assistant is an extremely powerful, but underdocumented tool to build Debian kernel modules. Module assistant aims to facilitate the process of building kernel modules from source. It uses source code from apt repositories and produces binary .deb packages.
05:03<Guest6173>Produces Binary .deb packages from source code
05:03<Guest6173>Building Debian Kernel module deb packages from source code

05:07<Guest6173>It aparently installs a Kernel Module by apt-get

Can I make the system boot from disk 2 (as root) and use the uefi partition from disk1?

15:38<sney>grub chainload maybe? I don't know much about efi boot though
15:39<chris_se>Bliepo, just root or also /boot? Just root: you don't have to do anything special
15:39-!-Guest6200 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
15:40<chris_se>of course the correct device needs to be specified in the boot loader (e.g. root=/dev/sdb1 or root=UUID=....)
15:41<Bliepo>chris_se: thanks, I'll try that. How can I modify root= ? (It's a headless server so no screen attached)
15:42<Bliepo>I don't have a seperate boot partition btw. Just a UEFI FAT partition on disk 1 (I forgot to create it on disk 2)
15:42<blast007>Bliepo: by "EFI partition" do you mean that little EFI system partition (ESP)?
15:42<Bliepo>blast007: yes

15:44<blast007>why are you needing to move that to the other drive?
15:44<Bliepo>blast007: I want to switch from ext4 to btrfs (I know there is a convert option, but I'd rather not use it)
15:46-!-gshereme [] has joined #debian
15:46<chris_se>Bliepo, so if you use btrfs you should probably reinstall grub
15:46<chris_se>so what you can do is the following:
15:46<chris_se>mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt (new root file system)

15:48<chris_se>mount --make-rslave --bind /sys /mnt/sys
15:48<chris_se>mount --make-rslave --bind /run /mnt/run
15:48<chris_se>then you can chroot into the new root file system
15:48<chris_se>chroot /mnt /bin/bash
15:49<Bliepo>chris_se: I tried that, but it complains it cannot find the EFI directory
15:49<Bliepo>Perhaps if I mount that one as well...
15:49<chris_se>ah, wait, you also have to bind-mount /boot/efi
15:50<chris_se>before doing the chroot
15:50<Bliepo>Yeah, why didn't I think of this before
15:51<chris_se>then inside the chroot do dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64 to reinstall the boot loader
15:51<chris_se>then do update-initramfs -k all -u
15:51<chris_se>then do update-grub

15:52-!-ahmadj [~ahmadj@] has joined #debian
15:52<chris_se>Bliepo, maybe. UEFI is a bit more complicated, so I tend to use the debian package scripts for that (dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64)

15:53<chris_se>update-initramfs -k all -u within the chroot is required to make sure the btrfs module is included in the initramfs images
15:53<Bliepo>In that case, I'll err on the side of caution
15:53<chris_se>and update-grub may or may not be necessary, but just to be on the safe side and make sure the configuration is updated
15:53<Bliepo>Will do!
15:53<chris_se>then, once you're done with the chroot, log out of the chroot and remove all bind mounts
15:53<chris_se>(in reverse order)
15:54<chris_se>and well, I hope you have a method of recovering that headless system, because while that _should_ work, things can go wrong
15:55<Bliepo>Yeah, I have ways of recovering, but I'm sure it'll be fine
15:55<chris_se>just be careful what you execute within the chroot and what outside of it
15:55<chris_se>all commands to setup boot loaders should be done within the chroot

19:14<Yst>Sometimes when my laptop battery gets low, it doesn't warn me. After it gets even lower, it goes into suspension, but when it comes back out, the graphics are all messed up. Any idea how I can fix the graphics after this has happened?

19:15<Yst>This time, my font was entirely bugged up. I had to switch fonts just to read anything, and it doesn't help with text in title bars and whatnot.
19:16<Yst>Usually it mainly hits my icons, though they seem to be fine this time.
19:17<Yst>I imagine there's a really simple fix for this, something that just makes the computer redraw everything, but I can't find it.

22:00<CodeMink>I thought it would be great to run Debian on my laptop. There is one problem though, my laptop doesn't show the Debian USB as a bootable option. I created the Debian USB by formatting a USB flash drive to FAT32, and then I copied the ISO to it with dd. That method works well with other distributions. I also burned the installation image to a DVD with Brasero, my laptop doesn't detect that either. I've tried the DVD, CD, and live installation images.
