00:27<P4C0>hello, I'm planning in setting up a box with debian for my parents, is it possible to have 2 accounts logging without password?

00:33<twb>P4C0: so that they type their name, but aren't prompted for a password?
00:34<P4C0>twb: yes... I have read somewhere about autologin in X
00:34<twb>It is easy to have a single account auto-login, see nodm.
00:34<twb>If you want users but no passwords, you can set a "null" password for both accounts.
00:34<twb>For security reasons, this might need to be explicitly allowed in your display manager, e.g. gdm3
00:35-!-hoopy [] has joined #debian
00:35<P4C0>twb: nice, but then it is possible right?
00:35<P4C0>perfect, thanks!
00:35<twb>I haven't done if for GUI logins for a long time, but I use it regularly for hosts that are physically secured
00:35<teatime>twb: really?
00:35<twb>teatime: yes
00:36-!-Yst [] has quit [Quit: <>]
00:36<twb>teatime: you obviously can't log in remotely with a null password -- it's blocked in /etc/securetty and in default sshd_config, plus I disable password auth for SSH.
00:37<twb>For hosts that netboot and have no local storage, my choice is either: no password, disable local console login, or ship a (hashed) password inside the netboot rootfs, which anyone on that network can read.
00:37<P4C0>I could get them both to use the same account, but it is nice to keep them separated, mainly due to browser history, preferences and such
00:37<twb>P4C0: if it's just browser history, have one account and two different .desktop icons that launch firefox -profile mum and -profile dad

00:39<P4C0>twb: hmmm
00:39<P4C0>twb: what's realy stored on the profiles? passwords? cookies?
00:39<twb>That's less weird than null passwords :-)
00:39<twb>P4C0: everything that happens in the browser, AFAIK
00:39<twb>Which in the "modern" world, means basically everything
00:39-!-hele_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:40<twb>You might have to do some basic viability tests
00:40<P4C0>that could be an option
00:40<twb>I don't use GUI browsers myself, I just lock them down
00:40<teatime>... you don't use a GUI browser
00:41<twb>teatime: not for daily use. I have to for some banking
00:41-!-junior01 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:45<sleblanc>P4C0, you could set up two X instances, so that you can switch from an account to the other with C-A-F6/7
00:46<sleblanc>maybe remap the keys, or provide a desktop icon that does the switching (e.g. "Dad's desktop" on mom's desktop, "Mom's desktop" on dad's desktop)
00:46-!-Xavier714 is now known as JeremyE77
00:46<sleblanc>A long time ago, when multi-monitor was slightly more iffy, I used to run two X instances (one on each screen) and the second was logging in under a different account

01:36<somiaj>squeeze hasn't been suported in a few years, and squeeze-lts support recentally eneded.
01:36<twb>You should definitely enable squeeze-lts if you're running squeeze
01:36-!-pabs [] has joined #debian
01:36<pabs>can I configure mdadm to stop sending mails about a particular disk in an array being failed? the machine is to be decommissioned at a specific time so I don't need mails about the broken disks, but if the arrays fail entirely I want a mail to decommission it earlier
01:38<twb>is that disk permanently failed out?
01:38<twb>I'm thinking of something like mdadm -M --remove failed
01:38<twb>Where "failed" is a literal string
01:39<twb>I had a feeling mdadm had a script that it ran to mail people (which you could therefore patch), but I can't see it. I may be thinking of smartd.
01:41<twb>pabs: it looks to me like hte emailing logic is baked into the mdadm binary?
01:41<pabs>hmm ok
01:41<twb>(Not 100% sure)
01:41<blaman>somiaj: thanks, now trying it
01:42<blaman>twb: yeah I tried that first but I can't find a mirror with build-essential in it
01:43<twb>blaman: does this work ? 17:36 <somiaj> blaman:
01:43<twb>(gotta go)
01:43-!-twb [~twb@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:43<pabs>not sure about permanently failed out, how do I tell?
01:44<somiaj>blaman: yea squeeze-lts only has the security updates, you need an actual squeeze repo, which is now on archive
01:45-!-Alam_Squeeze [] has joined #debian
01:46<blaman>somiaj: ah makes sense. I'm getting "Depends: libc6-dev but it's not going to be installed". This is on a fresh 6.0.10 install. I actually did this *yesterday* and it worked, sigh
01:47<pabs>LTS will be archived too soon enough. I would switch to wheezy ASAP
01:47<blaman>Could it have something to do with the fact that I shamelessly put squeeze-lts in /etc/debian-release to get it to work?
01:47<somiaj>I don't see why that would change much, espically with the repos and what packages you have available
01:48<somiaj>If you are doing a new install you should really use wheezy if you want security support.
01:48<smokeysea>Guys anyone can help get alt key escape key to irssi + screen combination in enlightenment
01:48<blaman>pabs: yeah it's because I need to make some backports for vyos which is based on squeeze
01:48<pabs>you can use for getting the old squeeze packages
01:49<somiaj>blaman: use, you might be able to do this inside a chroot if all you are doing is building stuff.
01:49<blaman>is there a guide for this?
01:49<somiaj>blaman: building in a chroot?
01:49<somiaj>blaman: look up deboostrap
01:50<blaman>ohh I see what you mean, alright
01:50<blaman>I'm off to work (this is actually for work), will be back later. thank you.

13:11<gas>Hello. I've set up a remote computer to run a bittorrent client. I was thinking about the Transmission client without GUI. But APT got me confused. description for transmission-cli says that it's a deprecated client for transmission-daemon, so I guess I have to install daemon+cli. Expect APT states they "replace" (and "break") each other. I don't understand...
13:13<chris_se>gas, transmission-cli breaks old versions of transmission-daemon (<< 1.50-1)
13:13<chris_se>while I haven't used that piece of software myself, apt is perfectly happy to install both at the same time

13:15<gas>Thanks, chris_se
13:17<chris_se>R4F_Debian, well, there's - no idea how well that works (haven't tried it myself) or if there are any potential pitfalls
13:17<chris_se>(note that for licensing reasons zfsonlinux is a DKMS module, i.e. the kernel module is built on your system, and not prebuilt like other kernel modules that come with Debian)

13:20<R4F_Debian>chris_se, it means it does not run as a native structure in Debian as it runs on Ubuntu Server ? Is that a risk using ZFS, since it is a DKMS device ?
13:20-!-tzafrir [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:20<chris_se>R4F_Debian, well, it is a kernel module, but it's compiled on your system (so installing the package will also install the kernel headers and a compiler and such)
13:21-!-smokeysea [~smoke@] has joined #debian
13:21<chris_se>there is a _slight_ risk that changes to the kernel through updates could result in the module not working anymore, but since you are running stable, and stable updates are very self-contained, this risk is minimal
13:22-!-follinge [~smuxi@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:22-!-jova2 [] has joined #debian
13:23<chris_se>also note that older versions of Ubuntu use the same logic (apparently quite successfully), newer versions do include a compiled module from the get-go, but there are many people that think that it's not quite legal what Canonical is doing with newer versions, so there's a risk that they will not be able to provide the precompiled module anymore at some point in the future for legal reasons
13:23<chris_se>(which to me seems to be the far greater risk, but that's just guesswork)
13:23<chris_se>so as long as you run stable and stable kernels, I expect you'll not run into problems

13:34<machstem>hey all. I have a ext4 partition on a server that I export on a SLES box using nfs4. I used to use fsid=0 in my options but whenI mounted my export on a debian box, I would list the contents and the user was set to tftp and the group as ssh. If I touched/created a file in that share,it wouldn't get the proper ownership/group nor the correct permissions. 13:39<chris_se>well, the kernel up to 3.3 doesn't support raw UIDs/GIDs with NFSv4, so you need to setup idmapping properly
13:39<chris_se>(on both the server and client)
13:40-!-siducer is now known as Guest6534
13:40<chris_se>on the server rpc.idmapd needs to be started
13:40<machstem>like, in my script i just run a ssh ip_address 'chown user:group /path/to/files' and then one for chmod 755 as it needs it
13:40<chris_se>on the client you can use either rpc.idmapd or you can use nfsidmap via request-key (the latter requires keyutils)
13:40<chris_se>both are configured in /etc/idmapd.conf
13:40<machstem>i run an rsync from this remote system with files that need to be updated on 30 diff servers

13:42<machstem>so i mount them all and rsync my master folder with each of the mounts
13:42<machstem>which is fine
13:43<machstem>but the files on the servers I export from dont get the proper ownerships/permissions after an rsync

14:04<teatime>how to configure apt/dpkg to not auto-start newly-installed daemons
14:04<teatime>and 2) how do you tell systemd to start anything configured to start at boot but not running
14:05<teatime>or even better if there's an init-system-agnostic way
14:06<muep>the preset mechanism in systemd is intended to address the first item. I however do not know if debian uses it
14:07<teatime>I've done both of these things but it was probably 10 years ago
14:08<chris_se>muep, debian doesn't properly support that yet, unfortunately
14:08<chris_se>also, presets are not about starting at package installation, but about enabling/disabling stuff
14:08<teatime>I think he must have meant my "2)" when he said first item
14:08<chris_se>teatime, well, there's the policy-rc.d mechanism, where you can disable the starting of daemons by maintainer scripts
14:09<chris_se>so if you install /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d, make that executable, then depending on the exit code of that thing daemons will be started etc. during APT installations
14:09<chris_se>(start or not)
14:10<teatime>hrm, I could have sworn there was an apt config item
14:10<chris_se>(and in theory at least this should _only_ affect package installations, and for the most part that's true, but there are some cases where packages didn't follow that completely)
14:10<chris_se>teatime, there isn't, sorry
14:10<chris_se>if you want to disable starting/stopping of daemons in maintainer scripts completely: printf '%s\n%s\n' "#!/bin/sh" "exit 101" > /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d ; chmod 0755 /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d
14:10<teatime>maybe I was remembering a different package manager :(
14:11<chris_se>however, that also affects package upgrades, and that is bad
14:12<chris_se>you can customize that to a certain extent (read the documentation: zless /usr/share/doc/sysv-rc/README.policy-rc.d.gz ), so you could whitelist already installed packages
14:13<chris_se>(this is init-system-agnostic, but not very nice)
14:13<chris_se>that's your best shot, but you're mostly on your own with that

19:41<chris_se>isn't awesome a tiling window manager?
19:41<chris_se>and shouldn't that replace the DE completely?
19:41<CJHR> Correct
19:41<CJHR>It should entirely
19:41<CJHR>So it means I probably have it installed wrong.
19:42<chris_se>also: "manual mode"? what do you mean?
19:42<chris_se>so you select your desktop environment or window manager at the login screen
19:42<CJHR>I did, yes
19:42<chris_se>all major login screens in debian support selection of all installed WMs/DEs
19:42<chris_se>with GDM, KDM and LightDM you have a small gear for selecting the "Session Type"
19:43<CJHR>Which I selected to Awesome
19:43<CJHR>However there was no noticeable change at all.
19:43<chris_se>(GDM: next to the login button _after_ entering the username and pressing enter, KDM: at the bottom left corner of the login box, _after_ entering the username and pressing tab, LightDM: at the top right corner of the screen, also _after_ entering the username and pressing tab)
19:44<CJHR>As for the 'manual mode', that's part of the output of my "update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" command
19:44<CJHR>After, huh
19:44<chris_se>ah, update-alternatives are just system defaults - but if you already logged in on that particular system, the system default doesn't hold
19:44<chris_se>(in this case)
19:44<chris_se>because a per-user setting is recorded

19:46<chris_se>(so for GDM it's per-user and per-computer, so if you have /home on NFS, GDM will store a different default for each combination of computer and user; while KDM will only discriminate between users)
19:46<chris_se>so if you select it before user/password, then it can't work
19:46<chris_se>because it's always a user-centric session
19:46<chris_se>(I agree that the UI design of _all_ login managers is crap in that respect)
19:46<CJHR>Well I'll relog and try username first, then my choice.

19:56<quentusrex>is there a separate irc channel for the debian ha maintainers?
19:56<chris_se>quentusrex, for example, 1.1.14-2 is not in testing yet and if you look at the changelog from 1.1.14-1 (which is in testing), it's quite large:
19:56<NapoleonWils0n>anyone else having issues with vlc not displaying video
19:56<chris_se>which means that they probably will at least want to backport 1.1.14-2 - but backports rules require that the package is in testing

22:08<somiaj>cystash: arm is just a different set of hardware, might be worht the expreince. But sounds like he has a paticular device in mind and wants to make custom images of various osses for it, which requires figuring out how to install/tweak each one on it.
22:10<cystash>Thats what im thinking, is it even possible to combine android and debian? I know android is technically a linux build. So i guess in a sence i could tear into androids source and tweak it to how he wants?
22:11<cystash>The device is a Blu Studio Mini Lte 2......yeah he is paying the company some good money to have me try and do this thats why im here asking you guys if its worth him spending the money or if i should tell my boss to refund him

22:12<somiaj>cystash: though my guess will be single images, not dual booting. But providing the option for others
22:12<somiaj>though this would be provided he wanted these images produced for something.
