06:52<twb>If you need to *override* these, some DNS servers (e.g. dnsmasq) will let you do so.
06:52<aborrero>mmmm... things are getting complicated

06:54<twb>Maybe instead you can use a SOCKS5 proxy, like ssh -D
06:54<aborrero>in this case, I control the multihomed workstation but the DNS server is out of my control
06:55<twb>It sounds like you should discuss your issue with your network administrator

13:53<R4F_Debian>Hi all ! I often use 'sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=3' to clean memory and reducing cache in my Debian Jessie 8.3 (architecture used amd64). It always gives me a good result: memory used: 1380 MB and only 619 MB free before; after using this command: 405 MB used and 1594 MB free and so on.. Is there any problem on using this command frequently ?

13:56<chris_se>R4F_Debian, it might make your system slower
13:56<chris_se>for a short period of time, until caches could be built up again
13:56<chris_se>otherwise, it's harmless
13:57<chris_se>but also quite useless: you don't actuall gain anything: the caches in the kernel don't hurt at all - if a program requires more RAM, the amount of memory available for caching is automatically reduced
13:57<R4F_Debian>Hi chris_se ! Thanks for answering the question ! So, you consider it not so useful....
13:57<chris_se>so if you have next to nothing running, you can easily have 70% of RAM used by caches, but as soon as you start something that actually uses the RAM, the number will go down automatically
13:58<chris_se>well, there's a reason for that feature: reproducible benchmarks
13:58-!-redbeast12 [] has joined #debian
13:58<chris_se>if you want to test I/O performance in any way, you want to do that
13:59<R4F_Debian>oh, I see, do you consider it important for tuning kernel parameters related to down latency ?
13:59<chris_se>what do you mean with "down latency"? latency of what/
14:00-!-T0rch [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
14:01<chris_se>so the linux scheduler has some issues with systems that have high memory pressure (basically it's problematic if the entire RAM is full of actual non-cache data) - but caches don't matter in that regard
14:01<chris_se>(not much, at least)
14:01<R4F_Debian>agile response time for heavy applications to run, not necessarily high performance in the beginning. Example: loading fast processes requried to load tables in a database, for example. In the case, I thought about PostgreSQL response time
14:01-!-StathisA [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
14:01<chris_se>well, in that case you definitely DON'T want to drop caches
14:02<chris_se>because you want to keep that in RAM if possible

14:03<chris_se>it's not going to cause damage
14:03<chris_se>it's just not very efficient
14:04<R4F_Debian>oh, I see, let's say, a bit obsolete...
14:04<sney>this seems like it might be a good time to link
14:04<chris_se>it just evicts all kernel caches, so if you need to access something, the cache will have to be built up again - which takes time, but is otherwise harmless

14:09<chris_se>the only time you need to 'clean RAM' is if you have too many programs running that can't really be supported on your machine, then you should close some of those programs to regain the RAM - but once the program ends, the kernel reuses that RAM automatically, so there's never anything you need to do manually when it comes to kernel memory management
14:09<sney>if you actually run out of memory, it is a much different experience, but this is VERY UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN unless you have an application using too much memory, or your system has a very small amount of overall memory, like <256M

14:37<chris_se>the fact that it's in stretch is because the package was removed from jessie during the last freeze by the release team, but they didn't specifically block it from reentering testing at that point except for the fact that testing was frozen - so after the release of jessie, the package migrated back to testing

15:03<chris_se>then you wouldn't need NFS (which is btw. not encrpyted and not authenticated with sec=sys), and then you wouldn't have this trouble
15:03<chris_se>machstem, either way would work
15:04<machstem>ok, sounds good to me (i know it isnt encrypted, but we iptables the traffic between the hosts to limit access)
15:04-!-level7 [~quassel@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
15:04<chris_se>note that in the rsync documentation there's an example script called 'rrsync'
15:05<chris_se>you can use that to restrict access of rsync via SSH
15:05<machstem>oh neat
15:05<chris_se>for example, create an SSH key
15:05<chris_se>and on the computer where you want to make the connection to, put that key in authorized_keys but with a twist:
15:05<machstem>well, all my servers have master's key currently
15:05<machstem>to avoid having to type in password (obviously)
15:06<machstem>so how would you go about it using ssh/rsync
15:06<chris_se>well, if you have full SSH access anyway, then rsync is easy:
15:06<chris_se>on master: rsync -azP /path/on/master remote_host:/path/on/remote_host
15:07<machstem>I see
15:07<chris_se>add -u if you want that (which would actually work)
15:07<chris_se>note that rsync uses ssh internally, so ssh remote_host needs to work
15:07<chris_se>also possible:
15:07<chris_se>rsync -azP /path/on/master user@remote_host:/path/on/remote_host
15:07<machstem>didnt know I could leverage ssh on rsync like that
15:07<chris_se>also possible:
15:07<machstem>let me test right now
15:07<chris_se>rsync -e "ssh -i /path/to/id_rsa" -azP /path/on/master user@remote_host:/path/on/remote_host

15:08<chris_se>no, -i is identity file - you only need that if you store a ssh keypair somewhere else
15:08<machstem>oh i see
15:08<chris_se>(if you just keep it in the normal location, you don't need it, so you don't need -e)
15:08<machstem>but since it's already stored on the other servers, would i still need it ?
15:09<Paul^^>I'm using debian 7.9 , I tried to install proprietari nvidia drm, and now xorg don't go
15:09<machstem>ok, let me adjust my script. you da man
15:09<chris_se>machstem, well, if ssh remote_host just works, you don't need -e
15:09<machstem>i ge tit now
15:09<machstem>let me test
15:09<Paul^^>before I used nouveanu and the machine gone
15:10<chris_se>but you can do all sorts of neat tricks, like create a specialized key pair for this rsync and restrict the authorized_keys entry via the rrsync example script to only allow rsync to a specific location
15:10<chris_se>or things like that - it's up to you
15:10<chris_se>(and rsync over ssh is actually where rsync is really useful, because then you can leverage partial updates to files without transferring stuff over the network - which is not possible with NFS)
15:11<machstem>and considering my source is about 90gb

15:20<chris_se>machstem, just a comment: there's --numeric-ids for rsync which will use uid/gid instead of user/group - which from our discussion yesterday you _don't_ want, but just wanted to mention it

17:44<chris_se>ok, for RAID you definitely want to use a newer kernel

22:41<cjac>I'd like to have my /etc/default/<service> functionality back... I wonder if there's a reasonable way to pick those args up from systemctl...
22:41<somiaj>cjac: takes time to get use to the new tools. Though I find unit files far easier to deal with than shell scripts and hacks like /etc/default to centralize info for them.
22:41<somiaj>cjac: for what service, this may depend on if the service has a unit file or is using the init.d LSB script
22:42<somiaj>i.e. systemd is compadable with LSB init scripts but will use its .service unit file if it is present.
22:42<somiaj>and it could be you can just modify the .service file to take the info you want from /etc/default/

22:52<cjac>looks like we should use EnvironmentFile=/etc/default/<service> in /lib/systemd/system/<service>.service
22:53<cjac>somiaj: docker in this case
22:56<somiaj>cjac: that sounds about right, and really you should copy the service file to /etc/systemd/system/ if you want to make your own custom version and leave the packge one alone.
22:56<somiaj>cjac: you may also want to file a minor bug if you think that should be included in the actual packages service file
