#debian IRC Logs for 2016-03-16

---Logopened Wed Mar 16 00:00:14 2016
---Daychanged Wed Mar 16 2016
00:00<oem>somiaj: it appears that i never get a ping from it due to networking failing. but if you look at the rc.local script you can also see it had a DEBUG_END line but it _never_ made it to the /root/debug.log (rc.local was set to output there) - this means that script exec failed somehow half way
00:01<oem>somiaj: once it failed i decided to see what might have gone wrong and edited rc.local for some debug helpers, the output went into /root/debug.log
00:02<somiaj>well the only thing that isn't run is the last date and echo, so the ssh is erroring out.
00:02<oem>doesn't exist
00:02-!-tracewpearson [] has joined #debian
00:02<somiaj>hmm, that is strange, that rule should be created when new interfaces are detected. Wonder if this means the machine isn't detecting any interfaces
00:03<oem>somiaj: yes, but any idea why isn't it run?
00:03<oem>somiaj: because it wasn't affiliated with the ssh line, normal execution should have went on, no?
00:03<oem>somiaj: or you think it's because of RETVAL?
00:04-!-CutMeOwnThroat [] has joined #debian
00:04<oem>somiaj: i'm currently in RESCUE mode. mounted the partition on /mnt
00:04-!-Iridos [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:04<somiaj>unsure, but if you are making it that far though the script it is the script itself that is at issue. rc.local is the last thing run
00:04<oem>somiaj: /mnt/etc/udev/rules.d
00:04<oem>somiaj: the only thing here is a single "README" file
00:04<somiaj>udev by default should create that file when it detects an interface
00:04<oem>somiaj: yeah, i'm runlevel 5
00:04<somiaj>this means the kernel of the machine is not detecting any interfaces
00:05<somiaj>runlevel 5? using sysvinit?
00:05<oem>somiaj: could it mean udev might be not starting as well?
00:05-!-Gibri [] has quit []
00:05<somiaj>I guess it could be no udev, but then you would probabaly have more issues.

00:11<somiaj>oem: you have your answer. Unsure the best way to debug why udev is failing to start in your vm.
00:12<oem>somiaj: the thing is, it's rather weird the 70-persistent-net.rules is not there though
00:13<somiaj>that is because udev is failing
00:13<somiaj>you'll have to track down why
00:13<oem>somiaj: i looked at the timestamp of that file on my armhf - last modified date was 2014
00:14<oem>somiaj: meaning, it was created long before and never modified since. question is why would that file get deleted
00:14<oem>somiaj: on that remote system

00:28<svetlana>oem: I'm still not sure I want to know what `the man has the answer, what 'movie' is this` means. It's an international channel so I think the burden of explaining is not on me.

Take a look at /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules, it checks for a bunch of MAC address patterns from hypervisors and prevents the rules from being generated, so it seems this feature is disabled for VMs. Not sure if this was your issue, the channel's been a little tough to follow tonight :)

04:19<seneka>if i unjoin and some others join to limit, can i join?
04:23<Juest>seneka: The limit exists as a antispam measure.
04:23<Juest>717/731 users right now
04:24<Juest>the bot controls limit based on the amount of people currently joined
04:24<Juest>it leaves space so legitimate people join
04:24<Juest>its designed so a join spam is kinda prevented
04:26<seneka>if spam is randomtext and multicanal?

12:17<StubbornOX>ok I am not familiar with ZFS or MD
12:18<sney>md is linux software raid. it's just as capable as basic motherboard raid (since those are mostly in software as well), with the advantage that the array can be moved to any linux system.
12:19<StubbornOX>ok that makes sense.
12:19<sney>zfs is a more advanced technology, unfortunately not supported as the root filesystem for debian at this time due to license issues, but very very good otherwise. it's not officially supported here, but there are a lot of other resources
12:19<dpkg>ZFS (originally Zettabyte File System) is a file system / logical volume manager developed by Sun Microsystems ( The Debian GNU/kFreeBSD kernel since 7.2 has ZFS support, the userland utilities are packaged as zfsutils. 15:48<sleser>but im not c onecting anywhere yet
15:48<sleser>so what is hapening ? why am i seeing it
15:48<chris_se>so basically OCSP is a protocol that let's browsers determine whether SSL certificates are still valid
15:48<chris_se>(and were not revoked)
15:48<sleser>do i have to worry about this ?
15:49-!-Kritzefitz [] has joined #debian
15:50<CQ>sney: trying again, the USB stick is not blinking though, so nothing seems to be happening
15:50-!-ubik123 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
15:50<chris_se>well, it's not immediately clear to me why it wants to connect to Comodo (which is a well-known CA) - presumably it tries to connect to some website that uses SSL/TLS and has a certificate by Comodo and then tries to verify that certificate
15:50<CQ>I get the feeling that it wants to boot a signed image or something like that
15:50-!-ach [] has joined #debian
15:51<chris_se>so OCSP has some trade-offs: since browser connect to CAs to verify OCSP responses, CA servers could in principle track users to some extent at least (although OCSP is cached for a couple of days)
15:52<sleser>id like to remove it
15:52<chris_se>the trade-off is that if a certificate is revoked, without OCSP you don't get to find that out without OCSP, so if a server is hacked and the SSL/TLS private key leaked, without OCSP you'll be susceptible to impersonation attacks
15:52<sleser>i dont need any providers help on this
15:52<chris_se>OTOH, if somebody is doing man in the middle, they might simple suppress OCSP (which is soft-fail by default), so against a sophisticated attacker that doesn't help
15:52-!-Sycamore [] has joined #debian
15:53<chris_se>don't know if the instructions are still valid, but:
15:53<sleser>google peoples advices is to remove it completely . so is why im conserned too
15:53<chris_se>in my personal opinion one should use OCSP stapling: server staples an OCSP response to the certificate, so the client doesn't have to connect to the OCSP server
15:53<chris_se>=> no privacy breach, and the OCSP response can be cached on the server side
15:54-!-grimm26 [] has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
15:54<sleser>sounds like complicated stuff to understand for . a person who dont understand all thouse things
15:54<chris_se>that works automatically if the server admin has configured it (and also works if the browser has "normal" OCSP disabled) - but unfortunately only a fraction of servers do OCSP stapling...
15:55-!-TomasCZ [] has joined #debian
15:55<chris_se>in an ideal world browsers would not connect without OCSP stapling, but not do OCSP themselves... but we're unfortunately far off from that
15:56<sleser>does your iceweasel show on iftop when if you just open it and havent pute a homepage on iceweasel
15:56<sleser>without connecting anywhere or brousing anywhere yet
15:56<chris_se>and there is a good argument to be made that privacy leaks to CAs is a much bigger issue than SSL/TLS impersonation with stolen keys (which is _very_ rare), so there is validity of disabling "normal" non-stapled OCSP in browsers
15:56<chris_se>I can check
15:57<sleser>yeh chek please
15:57<chris_se>note that firefox/iceweasel will not do OCSP by default without connecting to a website
15:57<sleser> also
15:57<chris_se>so it should not only connect to, but also to some website
15:57<sleser>mine is doing it without connecting anywhere yet
15:58<chris_se>so it does also on my system
15:59<sleser>safe or not ?
15:59<sleser>me too . but im not in to computers
15:59<sleser>so confused
15:59<sleser>wats the catch
15:59<chris_se>the comodoca: that's a trade-off between privacy in the common case and security in the rare case
16:00<sleser>google shows they colect info to sell it
16:00<sleser>and basicaly alot of bad things it can do
16:00<chris_se>so if you disable OCSP (see the link I posted earlier), you'll have better privacy, but you trade that against potential security issues in _extremely_ rare circumstances
16:00<chris_se>(i.e. if somebody hacks the server of something you want to connect to, steals a key, they could potentially impersonate that server without you knowing it)
16:01<sleser>nobody can hack a server without knowing a pw . as big as a sentense with 10 words
16:01<sleser>gold or money isnt stored in a server .

16:03<chris_se>well, some servers can indeed be hacked - why do you think credit card details of online shops get stolen quite often? on the other hand, that information is typically more valuable than SSL/TLS private keys of these shops to the attackers, so you can make a good argument that the privacy concerns related to OCSP outweigh the potential problem of not detecting a revoked certificate
16:03<chris_se>sleser, my guess is that some other request iceweasel makes in the beginning triggers that OCSP query
