01:14<awal>Trying to get a verbose boot logging with systemd, similar to the sysvinit one: any technical importance/difference/preference between adding "systemd.show_status=1" to the kernel cmdline and uncommenting the line "ShowStatus=yes" in /etc/systemd/system.conf ?
01:15<awal>the result is the same durring boot, so just wondering...
01:15<somiaj>awal: what you do mean by verbose, you just want it to print everything to the screen as it boots?
01:15<somiaj>have you removed the 'quiet' line from the kernel options in /etc/default/grub
01:16<awal>somiaj, every thing no, removing 'quiet' give an extreme verbosity. I just want something similar to sysvinit boot if you remember
01:16-!-markedsea [] has quit [Quit: markedsea]
01:16<somiaj>with all the [ OK ] that gets printed durng the servies? That is what I see when I remove quiet
01:17-!-markedsea [] has joined #debian
01:17<awal>somiaj, yeah the 'Ok's' I want only not all other kernel stuff (drivers and so
01:17<awal>I have found this
01:18<somiaj>I do see a 'quiet loglevel=3' [make sure you put it in that order]
01:18<somiaj>seems you can adjust that log level from 0 to 7, does that have any effect?
01:18-!-muka [~muka@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:18<awal>there you 're talking about systemd system.conf?
01:18<somiaj>no same /etc/default/grub
01:18<somiaj>instead of removing quiet
01:18<somiaj>adjust the loglevel
01:19-!-TomasCZ [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:19<somiaj>I have not tried this, so I don't know what effect it will have, it is just some documentation I found
01:20<awal>somiaj, ok I will try adjusting/playing ith levels from 0 to 7 as you said and see
01:20-!-woody [~woody@2602:306:83f1:9870:c911:4460:8ee5:4eb5] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:21-!-lambda-11235 [~Lambda@] has quit [Quit: Bye]
01:22<awal>but I think that uncommenting "ShowStatus=yes" in /etc/systemd/system.conf is a nice way (because I have tried it)
01:22<somiaj>I see there is some systemd log levels that can be set to, but unsure how it is grouoped. My boot is so fast I would rather just look at the output of the logs than see them during boot
01:23-!-lambda-11235 [] has joined #debian
01:24<awal>somiaj, right, looking at the output of logs when in X or tty is fine for sure, but my idea is because I miss the old sysvinit boot
01:24<awal>I like see the descriptive/info lines when booting the machine

01:25<awal>without that it's like I'm running ubuntu or windows
01:25<somiaj>awal: understand, hopefully you can adjust the loglevel to a acceptable balance.
01:26<awal>I know it's subjective what I said but, that's what I feel
01:26<awal>ok, somiaj, I'll try the loglevels too

09:47<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: check for some info on that. "dpkg-reconfigure" will let you choose which locales should be generated for a system, and which one is the default. there are various ways to choose a locale for a specific user/session/application
09:49<scootergrisen>I dont have dpkg-reconfigure
09:49<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: you could even try "locale -a" to list locales on your systme, and then launch supertuxkart with "LANG=fr_CA.utf8 supertuxkart" for example (setting LANG to something listed by locale -a, and whatever the program is called)
09:50<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: dpkg-reconfigure needs to be run as root. the stuff i suggested in in my previous comment can be done as regular user

10:35<vlad_>why do you need to write it on hard disk?
10:36<jmcnaught>n-st: it's better to use debootstrap or the debian installer in the VM. there are ways to automated the installer. if you do clone an image to make a new VM, there are a bunch of files that need to be changed for the new hostname (/etc/hostname, /etc/hosts, /etc/mailname, SSH host keys and more depending on packages installed)

11:01<jmlongo>yeah ... you're right
11:01<lindi->n-st: you can even run the installer on your own system inside kvm and export the block device over network with nbd
11:01<n-st>is there any initrd that contains just enough to set up a static ip and then tftp the installer via the internet?
11:02<lindi->n-st: I think your existing initrd can already do that
11:02<n-st>lindi-: any idea how?
11:02<lindi->n-st: "ip" command to setup networking, "busybox tftp" to use TFTP (but why do you want TFTP?)
11:03<lindi->n-st: my recommendation: install everything locally to a virtual machine and test that it works
11:03<jmlongo>maybe this could help too?

11:03<n-st>lindi-: i was thinking i could just skip the dhcp step of pxe-netboot by having an initrd set a static ip, then proceed to load the entire install environment over the network, like i would with pxe
11:03<lindi->n-st: then boot your existing installer with break=premount boot option and use "busybox nc" to copy the working image
11:05<n-st>lindi-: i've thought about that, but it would be painful to fix all the hdd and ethernet config mismatches from the "foreign" installation

17:07<androidirc>Hey there! Ive been having some driver issues with jessie which i couldnt resolve by myself(new to linux). Would this be a good place for questions?
17:08<teatime>7 Yes.
17:08<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on See <smart questions><errors>.

Ask me about <backport caveat> and read See also <bdo kernel> <bdo mirrors> <bdo contents> <bdo list> <bdo bugs> <bdo xorg> <bdo NEW>.

23:03<dpkg>The packaging tutorial ( and the New Maintainer's Guide ( are good places to start learning about Debian packaging. 23:03<somiaj>ays: nevermind, the second one is the link I was thinking off, didn't realize there was also that tutorial.

23:04<ays>I see. I'll read the new maintainers guide then.
