03:25<Orochikaku>I'm attempting to switch from Windows 10 to Debian Jessie
03:25<Orochikaku>I happen to not have a CD read/write drive
03:26<Orochikaku>But I do have USB ports, unfortunately this 'official' guide says I need a GNU/Linux system to install via USB :
03:26<Orochikaku>What can I do?
03:27<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show our .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
03:28<somiaj>Orochikaku: you can use that software in windows. It will do a direct write of the debian .iso you have downlaoded and put it on your usbdrive
03:29-!-Rosco2 [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
03:29<Orochikaku>Thanks somiaj I'll look into it.
03:33<Orochikaku>Hmm it appears that the .iso is split into 3 pieces, what should I do?
03:34<somiaj>Orochikaku: do you have a decent internet connenction? You can install with a minimial net install cd and only download the packges you want.
03:35<Orochikaku>I was hoping I could get 1 usb to install Debian on all my computers because it'd be a bit of a pain to do it over 5 times
03:35<somiaj>Orochikaku: debin has over 20,000+ packages, but you most likely don't need some of them.
03:35<somiaj>Orochikaku: What are you wanting to use? Do you want desktop software or any paticular type of software?
03:36<Orochikaku>I was planning to build on nothing basically. I assumed the netist would only have a bootstrap and a installer, or is it like a Debian base pakage?
03:36<somiaj>The netinstall contains a minimial base system that can be installed without the network
03:37-!-a-l-e [~quassel@2a02:1205:c6a2:4100:226:82ff:fe9d:8e25] has joined #debian
03:37<somiaj>but you will have to download all other packages you want to install.
03:37<somiaj>the cd images/dvd images are just collections of the most commonly used packages, so many only need dvd1 or even cd1 (depending on software you want to use)
03:38<Orochikaku>Oh, that's excellent, I'm used to minimal since the last time I dabbled with Linux was with Arch so I guess the netist is what I need.
03:38<somiaj>You can also set up an apt-cacher on your first machine and this way you dont have to download the packages from the internet each time just the network.
03:38<somiaj>Orochikaku: do you have wifi cards that may use non-free firmware? Would you be intersted in having an installer with the non-free firmware on the installer (not default in debian, since debian main won't have any non-free software in it)

03:39<jm_>if you are curious
03:39<somiaj>Orochikaku: I like the net-installer, but if you are downloading a full desktop on 5 diferent machines or more, might be worht while getting the full cdimage for the desktop you prefer
03:39<Orochikaku>Oh, yes! That's exactly what I wanted a cacher!
03:39<Orochikaku>I'll toss it on the NAS
03:39<dpkg>i heard apt-cacher is a caching proxy designed specifically for use by <apt>. See also <apt-cacher-ng>, <approx>, <aptly>.
03:40-!-descala [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:40<Orochikaku>Luckily I'm still a caveman in networking and using a good ol' switch and some CAT5
03:40<somiaj>maybe try apt-cacher-ng, I don't use them myself, but I belive that is what you'll want (there are other options, debian proivdes lots of choice)
03:41<Orochikaku>I must say, the Debain community is way more helpful than Arch's as much as I love it.

03:43<jmcnaught>apt-cacher-ng is pretty easy to use. once it's installed on a system, on the others while using the installer there will be a question about a network proxy for apt, and you put in "http://hostname.of.cache:3142/" (IP address works too)
03:44<Orochikaku>Sweet, luckily I've setup my network the way I have, this should be easy.

05:08<androidirc>Hey, i have a clean installation of the latest jessie stable, but i have a few driver issues(in particular with the i915 integrated graphics driver crashing and the audio driver not generating sound). This is probably because of the hardware being very new(skylake etc). Can someone please walk me through setting up the backports and kernel update correctly? Last time i tried it, i messed something up and the display driver just failed to load alltogether.

19:36<dpkg>#debian is primarily a support channel for Debian users. Please keep the discussions in #debian on-topic and take longer discussions and non-support questions to #debian-offtopic. Imagine the chaos if each of the hundreds of people in the channel felt the need to wander off topic for a few minutes every day.
19:36<three_legs>Marillion: we are talking about importing a new program into debian how is that off topic ?
