00:41-!-csharp [] has quit []
00:41-!-roaet [~cryptk@] has joined #debian
00:44<teatime>I dunno what firefox-esr is. but firefox was originally re-named to iceweasel because it was required by mozilla's trademark policy.
00:45<teatime>I think specifically it was that if you modify and re-compile firefox sources, you cannot redistribute it as "firefox" or use the other firefox trademarks (logo)
00:45<teatime>but now mozilla has relaxed that policy, at least specifically for debian, so it has been named back to firefox.
00:45<dax>it's been named back to firefox-esr ;)
00:45<dax>i assume the plan is to have non-esr versions somewhere too
00:46<dax>(ESR is Mozilla's term for long-term support releases)

04:20<chris_se>so maybe that takes away control of the wireless device from networkmanager
04:20-!-bolt__ [] has joined #debian
04:20<chris_se>you could do: systemctl stop create_ap.service && systemctl disable create_ap.service
04:20<chris_se>according to my reading of the source code of that thing (never used it)
04:21<mith_>all seems to be up, but if I give a iw dev wlan0 scan
04:21<chris_se>and then maybe restart networkmanager
04:21<mith_>the output is that the device is down
04:21<mith_>hi chris_se
04:21-!-bolt__ is now known as Guest9456
04:21<mith_>ok I try now
04:21<chris_se>(not the applet in kde, I mean the service: systemctl restart NetworkManager.service )

04:22<chris_se>yikes, just took a peek at the create_ap script. that changes a couple of things, so you may need to reboot after disabling the service, because it seems to change quite a bit of the network configuration

04:32<mith_>chris_se, i have rebooted, all semms to be up, in network manager and in the little light of the hardware device of laptop, but if I give a iw dev wlan0 scan the answer is "command failed: Network is down (-100)"
04:32<chris_se>mith_, but networkmanager works?
04:33<mith_>it seems that it works
04:33<mith_>wifi is active in network manager
04:33<mith_>if I give a ip link set wlan0 up
04:34<mith_>after the scan works anda I can connect with wpa_supplicant, but after the browser doesn't work
04:34-!-superusr [] has joined #debian
04:34<mith_>it seems that the browser can't use that connection made with wpa_supplicant
04:35<mith_>I'm in trouble....
04:35-!-Vyrus001_ [] has joined #debian
04:35-!-Vyrus001 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
04:36<chris_se>wait what? you are using both wpa_supplicant manually _and_ networkmanager?
04:36<chris_se>so what you could do is check /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to see if your wlan device is excluded
04:36<mith_>when I saw that nothing worked I try with wpa_supplicant
04:37<chris_se>(I think the script you used modifies the network manager configuration and maybe it didn't modify it back)
04:37<mith_>ok I verify
04:39<chris_se>so if you don't understand it, you can copy the contents of the configuration file to and give us the link - then we can have a look at it
04:40<mith_>[main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] managed=false [keyfile] unmanaged-device=interface-name:wkan0
04:40<chris_se>remove the unmanaged-device=... line
04:40<chris_se>(you can also remove [keyfile]
04:41<mith_>and managed shouldn't be true?
04:41<mith_>or false it's right?
04:41<chris_se>no, managed=false in [ifupdown] is correct
04:41-!-Nijikokun [] has quit []
04:41<mith_>now must I reboot?
04:41<chris_se>that means networkmanage should ignore interfaces configured in /etc/network/interfaces (the standard debian configuration)
04:41<chris_se>systemctl restart NetworkManager.service
04:41<chris_se>that should suffice
04:42<chris_se>but stop wpa_supplicant beforehand
04:42-!-em|tue [] has joined #debian
04:42<mith_>how can I stop it?
04:42<chris_se>check if it's running: ps aux | grep wpa_supplicant
04:42<chris_se>and if it is: killall wpa_supplicant (as root)
04:43<chris_se>wait a bit, and check again if it's running
04:43-!-markus-k [] has joined #debian
04:43<mith_>it's running...
04:43<chris_se>if it's still running, you can also force-kill it with killall -9 wpa_supplicant (don't do that by default, only if it doesn't stop by itself)
04:44<mith_>ok killall it works
04:44-!-em|tue_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:44<chris_se>now restart network manager with the systemctl command I gave you
04:44<mith_>wpa_supplicant it isn't running anymore
04:44<chris_se>by the way: network manager starts its own version of wpa_supplicant, don't kill that ;)
04:45<mith_>I have killed it with killall wpa_supplicant
04:45<mith_>it's wrong?
04:45<chris_se>if you did it _before_ restarting network manger, it's fine
04:45<chris_se>just don't kill it _after_ restarting network manager
04:45<mith_>i'm restarting it now
04:46<chris_se>I just want to make sure the wpa_supplicant you manually started while testing it is gone, because that will interfere with network manager

04:50<mith__>chris_se, wifi is working fine now, thank you very much
04:50-!-bill-auger [] has joined #debian
04:50<mith__>why didn't it work?
04:51<chris_se>because the create_ap script you used told network manager to ignore the device (that's the line in the NetworkManager.conf I told you to remove)
04:51<chris_se>btw. please check via the command "systemctl status create_ap.service" that the service is disabled and not active

04:54-!-mith_ [~mith@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:54<chris_se>because if you start it again at some later point, or run the script, it will likely modify the network manager configuration again (because it needs to, otherwise network manager will interfere with the access point)
04:54<chris_se>so if you ever use it again, remember to edit NetworkManager.conf afterwards
04:54<mith__>I understand

Reboot and check if that fixes the behaviour. If you have native IPv6 connectivity you might want to check why you can't contact that host.

10:26<chris_se>Parrhesiastes, do you still have a jessie installation to compare it to? would be interesting to see what parameters both stretch and jessie use to drive your monitor
10:27<chris_se>maybe stretch uses a slightly higher refresh rate (because the driver supports more) and the cable and/or monitor doesn't really support it?
10:27<Parrhesiastes>chris_se: i dont have that, no :/

10:28<chris_se>the tv maybe, the cable doesn't have to be...
10:28<fireant>greets from Manchester, UK.
10:29<chris_se>you're using two monitors?
10:29<chris_se>does it affect both of them? or only one?
10:30<Parrhesiastes>1 tv 1 monitor, only affect the tv
10:30<Parrhesiastes>i think the monitor is actually connected to a dp port
10:30-!-JanC [] has joined #debian
10:30<chris_se>well, internally it thinks it's HDMI
10:30<Parrhesiastes>ye, looks like
10:31<chris_se>but the gpu could have an internal hdmi->gp adapter integrated, so that doesn't have to say much
10:31<chris_se>*dp not gp
10:31<Parrhesiastes>i think the monitor only had hdmi, so dp→hdmi or something
10:31<Parrhesiastes>anyway :)
10:31<chris_se>ok, so 60hz looks reasonable (and is the lowest for which hdmi is specified IIRC). full hd also seems fine (it's not like it's 4k or something fancy)

10:32<chris_se>I would reasonably expect that your setup should work barring hardware problems (such as broken cable), but if you say the very same setup worked in jessie (also with 2 monitors?), my guess is that there's probably a driver bug in stretch that's not present or not relevant in jessie
10:33<chris_se>you'll have to ask the driver people there
10:33<Creak>I have two users, but I'd like the second user's local emails to get in my mailbox. Is it possible to do that?

10:34<atannus>chris_se: Not jessie, stretch.

10:36<chris_se>atannus, so according to phpmyadmin in stretch is a different version than in jessie, so can't comment on that. but you could probably look at the bugtracker for phpmyadmin and see if somebody already reported a similar issue. otherwise open a bug report - worst case what happens is that it's not a bug and the maintainers close it
10:37<chris_se>but what you describe appears to be a missing dependency
10:37<chris_se>is the package php-gettext installed on your system?

10:40<atannus>chris_se: What does that mean "not a real package"?
10:40<chris_se>which appears to be wrong to me, since php-gettext is an Arch: all package providing PHP code, whereas php7.0-common contains a C extension for PHP

10:47<atannus>chris_se: well, I wasn't even sure this was a debian (package) bug or if I had to report upstream to the developer... You seem to agree that the problem seems to be that the phpmyadmin package is not loading all of its dependencies, correct?
10:47<atannus>But you went further and realized that php5 should be loading that dependency (php5-gettext). Do I have it right?
10:48<chris_se>well, it's more complicated than that. there's currently a move to php7 going on (but php5 is still available)
10:48<chris_se>and there is a package called php-gettext for PHP5 that is implemented in PHP to read gettext MO files - but apparently that's now integrated into PHP7
10:49<chris_se>and somehow that isn't handled properly, probably in phpMyAdmin
10:49<atannus>So, adding php5-gettext as a required package of phpmyadmin should fix this, should it not?
10:50<chris_se>but it could be that you can't actually solve this issue (other than documenting it), because what you'd need is something like "if used with PHP5, require the php-gettext package" (there is no "php5-gettext") but "if used with PHP7 don't require it and don't include the stuff because it's in a extension"
10:50<chris_se>no, it's already a dependency of phpmyadmin

10:51<chris_se>unfortunately, you can install php5 and php7 in parallel, so even if you're still using php5, the dependency of phpmyadmin is formally satisfied (from an APT perspective) by php7
10:52<chris_se>so now you have the situation that phpmyadmin does depend on php-gettext, but since you have php7.0-common installed, apt thinks the dependencies are all satisfied; but since you don't actually use php7 but rather php5, phpmyadmin doesn't work because it's missing the package required for php5
10:52<atannus>So php-gettext is never actually installed.
10:53<atannus>I understand...
10:53<chris_se>I honestly don't know if that can actually be solved using the APT dependency model. But this definitely should be documented in the phpmyadmin package, so check the README.Debian and NEWS files there to see if that was already done - and if not, file a bug to ask that this be documented.

11:41<T4b>So I've got a mixed IPv4/IPv6 home network. I disabled DHCPv4 on the router and set up my own isc-dhcp-server and bind9 combo. Almost works: While in Gnome/Network-Manager-graphical-thingy it says it's using the DNS servers I configured via DHCPv4, in resolv.conf there is only an IPv6 entry, probably through some auto-discovery thing coming from my router (which I can't turn off nor configure, crappy provider enforced router). How would I
11:41<T4b> make it at least *also* insert the IPv4 entries? That would solve 2/3 of my problem. Ideally I would be able to set up DHCPv6 (in the stateless variety I guess?) but that looks like opening a whole new can of worms to me.

11:52<T4b>Good point. Don't know about that either.
11:52<chris_se>for example, when not using network manager on a default debian install, I doubt that DHCPv6 will actually work out of the box (you'd probably need to install some other software), whereas default ICMPv6 autoconfiguration will work (on a kernel level)
11:54<chris_se>or maybe the software is already installed, but I don't recall DHCPv6 being used by default, so my guess is at the very least you'd probably need to tell debian to do so by default
11:54<chris_se>(networkmanager is a different story, that does DHCPv6 by default AFAIK)

22:16<kleedrac>It's been happening at a very erratic schedule (twice 2 days ago then nothing until today) and when it happens the PID changes but is always gone before I can ssh into the box and check what it is with ps

22:17<kleedrac>grantwu: Nope in fact there's no /usr/share/samba folder at all
22:17<kleedrac>Could I use that to help? Write a script and put it there to read out error and PID information?
22:18<sney>I just looked at the /usr/share/samba/panic-action script on my system and it's what generates that email
22:18<sney>so either there's some samba gunk in a weird location on your system, or the email is coming from a different server than you think, or maybe ghosts
22:19<kleedrac>Well the email is pretty clearly labelled as which server is generating it - plus only 2 of my servers have been given the ability to send external email
