04:53<duclicsic>Bubble_Gum: a mouse shouldn't really need any special drivers. what's wrong with it?
04:54<Bubble_Gum>It's a nice gaming mouse that works fine on Windows, but I can't use the hotkeys on the side.. I had what they dubbed a "utility"
04:54<duclicsic>try running 'xev' and then press those buttons while hovering over the little window, it will show if they produce any keypress events
04:55<Bubble_Gum>Those buttons on the side are what I want to utilize; it's why I bought it.. I love Linux.. if it weren't for some games on Windows i wouldn't even use anything Microsoft related

05:05<duclicsic>there isn't going to be just one file, that ckb is a piece of software moreso than a driver
05:06<duclicsic>when you download it from git and build it you can do so in its own directory, then if you want to remove it you can always just delete the directory
05:06<Bubble_Gum>No wonder people hate Windows..
05:06<Bubble_Gum>Linux users..
05:07<Bubble_Gum>A lot of the traditional programs create a registry entry in windows and scatter files everywhere.. You're saying I can just assign everything to one directory
05:08<duclicsic>Bubble_Gum: when building software from source, you first do so inside a nicely contained directory, it's then up to you if you want to 'install' it to the system by placing binaries in your path, libraries with other libraries, etc
05:09<Bubble_Gum>Alright, only half of that made sense
05:09<Bubble_Gum>Can you walk me through or link me with the basics
05:09<Bubble_Gum>The part I got was that the downloaded file needs to be in a folder I create myself..
05:09<Bubble_Gum>The next part.... uhm..

05:32<phyrexia>Hello, I have a short question. I own a Dell Vostro 3750 that's running debian 8. The laptop comes with the optimus nvidia technology which supplies an onboard/standalone GPU.
05:32<phyrexia>After some tinkering with bumblebee/steam I got all my games working.
05:33<phyrexia>This tinkering did require to downgrade libdrm. I have marked libdrm on hold using apt-mark
05:33<phyrexia>dpkg --status shows libdrm packages are HI.
05:33<dpkg>I think you lost me on that one, phyrexia
05:33<phyrexia>running an apt-get update/upgrade still tells me the package is kept back and I cannot perform the upgrade.

05:35<phyrexia>The essence of the question is. I have a / multiple packages marked on hold using apt-mark. dpkg --status shows the packages are hold/installed. Performing an apt-get upgrade still does not work tho

05:37<teatime>phyrexia: unless perhaps some other upgraded package depends on the newer version?

05:38<teatime>you could see if aptitude gives a different result..
05:38<phyrexia>I'll have a look into what packages depend on libdrm
05:38<teatime>even in that case, I'd expect it to do what you want.
05:38<phyrexia>It's odd though, the package apt-get upgrade specifies that depends is marked hold.
05:38<jmcnaught>phyrexia: why did you need to downgrade packages, are you mixing releases or something?
05:38<teatime>huh? can you pastebin the full/exact error?
05:38<phyrexia>I'm making a pastebin as we speak
05:39<phyrexia>jmcnaught: I downgraded because my game simply wouldn't start. The ValveSoftware github had a thread about the libdrm issue, I downgraded and the game worked.
05:40<jmcnaught>phyrexia: are you using the steam package from Debian, or did you add a steam/valve repo?
05:40<Iridos>phyrexia, yeah... being a bit more concrete about "doesn't work" often helps :)

21:14<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: mine says that too, i wouldn't worry about it.
21:16<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: if you want them, there are lsb-* modules available, but Debian is removing most of LSB support in the next release, it doesn't get used much. I think all that will remain is the "lsb_release" command
21:16-!-shiftplusone [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:17<R4F_Debian>I see jmcnaught, but, please, what exactly LSB module does ? This question I couldn't fix solve in Debian Jessie

21:21<R4F_Debian>I tried 'man LSB', but there is no manual entry for lsb
21:21-!-sidmo [] has joined #debian
21:27<somiaj>R4F_Debian: what is the main thing you are trying to achive. Debian is dropping LSB support mostly because what it has, isn't full LSB support. Are you having the issue with software that is in debian or with running some 'lsb-complient' software?
21:29-!-sidmo_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:30<R4F_Debian>Hi somiaj, nice to see you again here ! In fact, I just would like to know what is LSB about, for discovered I don't have any LSB module installed here, and if it is quite necessary for my Debian Jessie 8.4 installation
21:31<R4F_Debian> as I showed to jmcnaught
21:31<somiaj>R4F_Debian: it was a system of tools/standards to ensure a certain level of base libaries and ABI calls on multiple distros
21:31-!-Shentino [~Shentino@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:31<somiaj>R4F_Debian: so a distro being 'lsb-complient' meant that it follows these standards and could run software built for LSB complient systems.
21:32<somiaj>R4F_Debian: the issue is the standards are hard to keep up with and in some case they aren't used that often or really needed. They may be useful to third party software providers, but the standards aren't keeping up. You can look at the lsb mailing list to see dicsussion on why it is not really being supported in debian naymore
21:32<R4F_Debian>oh, I see, and according what jmcnaught said me, it is not necessary here
21:33<somiaj>correct, I belive you are very strickt about only installing packages from the debian repos, in that case lsb compadability is not something you need to worry about.
21:33<somiaj>I'm sure it effects some people (and not jessie has some level of lsb compliance, so I'm unusre at what level it is at)
21:33<somiaj>I think a lot of this is stretch/sid info and partly that gcc5 compiled libs won't be compadable with the ABI calls required for lsb compliance
21:33<R4F_Debian>yes, somiaj, I always take care on installing basically through official and stable Debian Jessie repositories, I avoid non-free

21:35<somiaj>R4F_Debian: lsb compliance was trying to build some standard 'base components' for linux across distros. Usually used by third partiesi and priorprity (non-free) software.
21:35-!-Kottizen [~ZombieTre@] has joined #debian
21:35<jmcnaught>some of the stuff in non-free is considered free by others outside of Debian, like GNU documentation for example
21:35<R4F_Debian>yeah teatime, but I am still novice in Debian Administration. I would easily make mistakes you don't make anymore
21:35-!-Casper [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:35<teatime>jmcnaught: yes, very true
21:35<somiaj>R4F_Debian: the lsb packges in debian were meant to be the packages you needed to install to have this compadability. But this is only an issue for those who need to run the third-party software. Those issue should not be effecting any package in debian.
21:36<teatime>jmcnaught: the only thing that kept me from saying 'non-free is perfectly fine' is I wasn't sure I wanted to endorse nvidia driver lol
21:36<R4F_Debian>great somiaj !
21:36<teatime>although it seems to engender less hate these days from the channel

21:38<jmcnaught>i still hate the proprietary video drivers :)
21:38<teatime>heh... I will not lose sleep if I offend the FSF, who will not even give debian (of all distros) their free-software stamp of approval
21:38<R4F_Debian>well, jmcnaught, thanks for attention and information. Thank you again, somiaj for ample information about lsb !
21:39<R4F_Debian>yes, teatime, such as mixing in Debian repository linux mint, siduction, ubuntu and make a Frank-Debian, right ?
21:39<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: the other context LSB means something is the LSB headers in init scripts, but systemd units are a lot easier to manage
21:40<somiaj>I'm the other way, I actually like the nvidia blob (hav been using it for 15+ years). I would rather it was 'free', but as for the drivers it has worked for me well enough.

21:44<R4F_Debian>yea somiaj, you, jmcnaught, sney understand me already. Thank you !
21:45<somiaj>teatime: double check that, I think that is why debian wont' work on many pi's is because they only support arm v6 and v7 (that is the issue with my old pi, though it was one of the originals (like oriringal release Bs)
21:45<somiaj>but I think the new 2.0 (slightly more expensive models) do
21:45<somiaj>the newest 5 dollar pie I don't think supports version 7 though.

21:45<R4F_Debian>See you ! Bye !
21:45<teatime>I think the reason you use raspbien is everything has been re-built for arm softfloat abi, and is thus faster; but I think debian has a corresponding arch now. also I may have that backwards.
21:45<jmcnaught>The Pure Blends are basically task/meta-packages.. one or two of them have dedicated installers but the rest you just install from a regular Debian system
