02:40<jmcnaught>gonzalo: there are Limit directives documented in systemd.exec, and Restart=on-abnormal can restart when the service is timing out. It's probably better to figure out why the service consumes so much CPU and fix that

02:42<jmcnaught>gonzalo: systemd.resource-control(5) might also interest you

02:43-!-zyl [] has joined #debian
02:44<jmcnaught>gonzalo: you could also use monit or something similar, but the best would be to fix the cause of the problem, whatever's making the service consume so much CPU instead of restarting it all the time

02:48<gonzalo>jmcnaught: thanks!!! the problem occurs in very specific occasions and restarting the application solves it. what is the better application to monitor a process?? monit, supervisor?? or is better to monitor the process with systemd?? and sorry for my english!!
02:48-!-srtu [] has joined #debian
02:51<jmcnaught>gonzalo: if it were me i would try and do it just with systemd. not sure if monit or supervisor is better. if you have a lot of systems to monitor you might prefer something like nagios or icinga

12:22<lindi->jla: or hmm, it's just a workaround
12:23<Cerb>actually i am not forced to use pcmanfm .. i might use another file manager.. i just like pcmanfm
12:23<jla>I agree
12:23<jla>or you could edit your shortcut to launch differently
12:23<Cerb>you agree with me or with lindi- ?
12:24<Cerb>i would like dolphin even better..but i had trouble in setting it as the default file manager because i do not find its .desktop

16:14<jmcnaught>jla: actually from what i gather it seems systemd fixed this by making RemoveIPC not apply to system users. I bet you could fix this by making a system user for this program with "adduser --system ..." and using that instead of the nobody user

16:15<jmcnaught>jla: nobody has a uid of 65534, system users have uids between 100 and 999 (on debian at least). I didn't dig very far, but i think systemd is deciding what's a system user based on what's in /etc/login.defs
16:15<jla>jmcnaught: That's a also good solution for other reasons I've read in the past. Maybe I'll use this as a reason to finally do that

16:35<Weierstrass>I'm using Debian Jessie on VirtualBox and can't set my resolution to 1366x768. I generated the xorg.conf with "X -configure", copied to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tried to edit the "Device" Section driver with "virtualbox" or "vboxvideo" and didn't work
16:35<Weierstrass>it will only work if the "Driver" in the Device Section is "vesa" but the max resolution is 1024x768

16:43-!-gfedel_ [~gfedel@] has joined #debian
16:44<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: VirtualBox provides specialized drivers for guests so that they can use the virtualized hardware. I don't use VBox, but libvirt+KVM which has similar "virtio" drivers. This is probably why you are stuck using the fallback VESA driver. /var/log/Xorg.0.log would have some details
16:44<blast007>Weierstrass: I install that and then I can just resize the VirtualBox window to whatever size I want.
16:46<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: you'll want to watch the output of apt-get when you install the package to make sure it successfully compiles the modules. The dkms package it depends on recommends a linux-headers package, which should install unless you've done something like disable recommends (which is not recommended)

16:49<R4F_Debian>Hi all, I had a strange experience using 'youtube-dl' in my Debian Jessie here: I downloaded a large video file, extracted in youtube (2.43 GB), and after more than 5 hours, I was done succesfully. But I can't find the file

16:58<barteks2x>Is it possible to make it so that after the next stable release my system will automatically switch from testing to stable?
16:59<jeremiah>barteks2x: What are you using in your /etc/apt/sources.list -- testing or stretch?
16:59<jeremiah>If its testing, you'll follow testing
16:59-!-Airwave [] has quit [Quit: Bye]
16:59<jeremiah>But I think you can switch to stretch and then when stretch is released, you'll be on "stable"
16:59<barteks2x>So I need to change testing to stretch, right?
16:59<jeremiah>barteks2x: Yeah, I think that should do it.
16:59<jmcnaught>barteks2x: this probably isn't a very good idea. while testing is frozen a lot of stuff gets queued up in unstable. when testing becomes stable, there's a lot of turbulent changes in testing
17:00<Weierstrass>blast007, jmcnaught: sorry for my ignorance, you are telling me that I have to install guest additions in VirtualBox on Windows then after installing Debian I have to install the guest additions again inside the GNU/Linux OS?
17:00<blast007>you install it on the virtual machine, not on the host
17:00<jmcnaught>barteks2x: so it's probably best to stick with "stretch" and then remain on stable for the first few months, then move to the next testing release. also testing support is next door at #debian-next
17:00<barteks2x>Switching from stable to testing was probably the worst decision I've made, and when it will be possible I want to start using stable again

17:02<Weierstrass>blasted007, jmcnaught: oh! Alright, I'll look for it. I'm sorry for misunderstanding.
17:03<dpkg>[contrib] Debian packages that contain <DFSG>-compliant software, but have dependencies not in main (possibly packaged for Debian in non-free). To get contrib packages, add lines like "deb [jessie|stretch|sid] main contrib" to your /etc/apt/sources.list, then «aptitude update». Also ask me about <non-free>, <contrib list>.
17:03<barteks2x>I have a few reasons. 1. I don't want to ever touch nvidia drivers+bumblebee again, 2. I don't want to reinstall all of my programs half of which I don't even remember now.
17:04<blast007>Weierstrass: basically change at least the main lines in /etc/apt/sources.list so it ends with "main contrib" instead of just "main", then 'apt-get update' and then install the package

On testing however package upgrades can bring new features, change behaviours, remove stuff, introduce new bugs etc. So testing might be fine for you right now, but if you want "no surprises" then stable is what you want to use

20:27<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: good to hear :)
20:27<shaimoz>a very green person here
20:27<c0nfuseki>i see. thanks jmc... turns out that what i wanted was apt-cache show and apt-cache search

20:32<shaimoz>ive tried u Torrent and transmission but it doent work
20:32<jmcnaught>shaimoz: okay, you'll need to find AV Linux's support channel then, only Debian is supported here
20:32<jmcnaught>!based on debian
20:32<dpkg>Your distribution may be based on and have software in common with Debian, but it is not Debian. 20:33<shaimoz>its debian
20:33<jmcnaught>shaimoz: please read the above message from dpkg
20:34<shaimoz>okey and thanks guys

20:38<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: i don't know if any browsers refuse to start as root, but running a browser as root is dangerous. you should only use root for administrative tasks, never log into a graphical session as root

20:40<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: if you ever need to be root for a few commands you can us "su -l" to temporarily become root. There are some graphical tools like Synaptic that will prompt for the root password. Other than that avoid using root
20:41<Weierstrass>jmcnaught: yes, I'm learning :) I'm reading right now about how to configure sudo
20:43<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: sudo is pretty easy to set up. You install the sudo package, then add your user to the sudo group with the command "adduser username sudo". Then log out, log back in, and sudo commands will work.
20:44<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: there are some pretty decent free books at the handbook and reference especially, they both can also be installed locally with packages
20:45<Weierstrass>jmcnaught: oh, it's so easy!
20:45<Weierstrass>jmcnaught: I'll check them out! Thank you again
