04:09<stemid>is it possible to update nofile for root without reboot? I've been completely stuck on wheezy with the following in /etc/security/limits.conf and it works for myuser when I logout but not for root.
04:09<stemid>does root require reboot on debian wheezy?

04:13<twb>stemid: I think you can just restart the service in question
04:13-!-Corey84 [] has joined #debian
04:13<twb>Those limits apply per process
04:14-!-Corey84 is now known as Guest2001
04:14<stemid>yes but I want to confirm them by creating a root bash process and using ulimit -Hn, that's where the issues are.
04:14<stemid>but yes I could blindly restart the service and hope it works.
04:14<stemid>it's weird because I could see the new ulimit -Hn just a minute ago.
04:14<stemid>and now I can't
04:14<stemid>must have something to do with how I login
04:15<stemid>root is a disabled account on this server, I login using a sudo account.
04:16<stemid>I tried su - root, sudo -i bash
04:16<twb>Yeah I'm a bit fuzzy on those details
04:16<stemid>ok I guess root is not disabled, because su works. I meant it's not allowed to login over ssh. I haven't passwd -l root

04:20<stemid>also weird that strace -o logfile su - root doesn't work while su - root works. I was trying to see in strace if was being opened.
04:20<stemid>but I haven't touched my pam config on this system
04:20-!-Zimmer_Nova [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:20<stemid>strace -o logfile su - root gives me Authentication failure
04:22<grawity>that's normal; strace (ptrace) makes the kernel ignore the setuid bit, so su is no longer special
04:22<stemid>I suspected something like that, thanks
04:22<grawity>if you must, run su first, and attach to a running pid with -p while it's waiting at the password prompt
04:22-!-garagenum [] has quit []
04:23-!-garagenum [] has joined #debian
04:23<grawity>anyway, to update rlimits for existing processes, you can use `sudo prlimit --nofile=1234567 --pid=<PID>`
04:23<grawity>e.g. --pid=$$ for the current shell, or script something with `pgrep -u $USER | xargs ...`
04:23<stemid>sure enough pam_limits is not in the strace logfile.
04:23<stemid>thanks grawity! prlimit is a great tip
04:24-!-fstd [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:24<grawity>that's also somewhat normal – pam_limits is a session module, so it won't be reached if you get an error during the authentication phase
04:24<stemid>I mean I attached to the su process with strace -p, so I was able to login.
04:24<garagenum>hello, i have a problem trying to pxe install Debian, when i try to add extra packages
04:25<garagenum>I did post on debian forums but no answer.. would someone be able to help?
04:25-!-Casper [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

04:29<stemid>yes I can even see that is commented in su
04:29-!-thierry [] has joined #debian
04:29<stemid>but not in login
04:29<stemid>I could just uncomment it in su and try again
04:29<grawity>hmm I thought they both just include it via common-session
04:30<stemid>yes that worked, I could see the new limit

04:41<rqou>anybody happen to know how to fix imagemagick giving "convert: non-conforming drawing primitive definition `path' @ error/draw.c/DrawImage/3182." when trying to go from svg ==> wmf?
04:42<rqou>i'm running literally the simplest possible command ever: "convert foo.svg bar.wmf"
04:43-!-srtu [] has joined #debian
04:44<twb>Try graphicsmagick instead of imagemagick?
04:44<twb>From the error, I'd guess your SVG is buggy
04:44<twb>Try rsvg-convert (from librsvg-bin) as well, though that cannot emit WMF
04:45<rqou>the svg comes from matplotlib.pyplot, and firefox and inkscape and eog can all read it
04:45<rqou>i'm trying to get it to a wmf to feed it to google docs

04:48<twb>can google docs not accept a vector image, in PDF or EPS format?
04:48-!-Triumphguy [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:48<twb>because WMF is raster and raster is >sad face<
04:49<rqou>I thought wmf is also vector? The interwebs seems to think only wmf works
04:50<rqou>Somebody else on the interwebs suggests uniconvertor, but the debian package for that seems to be broken
04:51<HamishB>Hi, rebuilding a system due to a failing hard drive corrupted some files in /usr/bin/ and /usr/include. can't boot it but can mount it. is there a straight forward way to get a dpkg --get-selections or the aptitude magic to list manually installed packages from the intact 3rd party dpkg database?
04:51<HamishB>ie /var/cache/apt copied off ok
04:52<twb>rqou: hmmm, maybe you are right
04:52<twb>rqou: OK WMF can contain raster and/or vector
04:52-!-metnel [~binyamind@] has joined #debian
04:52<rqou>blargh, uniconverter is broke as s***
04:53<metnel>Hey, I'm trying to connect to a windows share using gvfs and the login prompt just keep on reappearing. it does work when I use cifs mount however. Am I missing something?
04:53<rqou>I am trying to avoid yak shaving right now; any simple SVG=>WMF methods that can be run batch/from the command line?
04:53<twb>metnel: in nautilus ?
04:54<grawity>metnel: Samba/smbclient has become a bit more restrictive about authentication methods, I think
04:54-!-Zimmer_Nova [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:54<twb>Yeah testing with smbclient directly is a good idea
04:54<twb>rqou: did gm work?
04:54<grawity>metnel: try "client use spnego = no" in smb.conf
04:54<metnel>I'm able to mount with cifs
04:55<rqou>I'm not sure how to select gm in lieu of imagemagick
04:55<metnel>okay, let me try that
04:55<grawity>cifs is not Samba
04:55-!-f10 [~flo@] has joined #debian
04:55<rqou>it seems to also name its tool "convert"?
04:55<grawity>it's a separate client
04:55<metnel>grawity: so I should try with smbclient directly?
04:55<twb>rqou: "gm convert blah" instead of "convert blah"
04:55<grawity>metnel: yes
04:55<rqou>gm gives "gm convert: Non-conforming drawing primitive definition (path)."
04:56<twb>OK so same issue
04:56<twb>did rsvg-convert say the same?
04:56<twb>Is the SVG actually well-formed? Especially if it was generated by python2 instead of python3, might have invalid UTF-8 byte sequence or something

05:05<rqou>welcome to computers
05:05<adema>i'm using jessie and just set up procedure to uncrypt lvm with a keyfile stored in an usb key, and wonder how does initramfs handle keyscript found in crypttab
05:06<adema>because, for some time it ued to be full path do the script like /lib/cryptsetup/scripts/passdev
05:06<adema>and now it's just the name of the script in /lib/cryptsetup/scipts
05:07<adema>if you use full path, the passdev binary does not end up in the initramfs but no error is outputed during initramfs build
05:08<metnel>Thank you guys! it does work now. I had to change add 'client use spnego = no' to smb.conf. now everything works!

09:45<danlii>So I just installed Debian jessie on a Lenovo Thinkpad X260, which I usually start up with lid down, in a dock, connected to an external monitor. systemd-sleep sets it to suspend soon after starting up, while still in the login screen, seemingly because the lid is down. If I open the lid, this won't happen.

Think of all the main computers in the world that are physically connected (by T1 and T3 and M1 and such) as stones in a lake. To get from your stone to the stone on the other side you need to "hop" on a certain number of other stones. Same for communicating on the Internet.

20:48<sney>if it's your only option and winusb is something you absolutely need, then you can use dmo, but generally the recommendation is to find better software
