01:18<R4F_Debian>Hi all, I would like a help with unrar-free that I've installed here in my Debian Jessie 8.4. I saw in the man pages descriptions and explanations (options) for unpacking a .rar file, but it is not being succesfully applied here

01:21<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: the description for that package says that it can't handle some files in the RAR 3.0 format, but to try the "unar" package

01:23<R4F_Debian>jmcnaught, I have a file here in this path: r4fkramer@r4f:~/Downloads$ ls
01:23<R4F_Debian> RDFNCLUB15VLDOIS.rar
01:25<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: i don't have a lot of experience with RAR files to be honest, but the man page for unar looks pretty straightforward
01:25<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: there's also an unrar in non-free
01:26<R4F_Debian>jmcnaught, I see. In this case, I used the following syntax: unrar-free -x --extract RDFNCLUB15VLDOIS.rar
01:27<R4F_Debian>unrar-free was installed without problems here, I try to unpack, the procedure starts through command line, but .mp3 files aren't extracted, only others
01:28<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: it's probably a file that unrar-free doesn't support, so try unar or unrar (the non-free one)
01:29-!-gdot [] has joined #debian
01:29<R4F_Debian>ok jmcnaught, thanks for attention and help. I will try it here

01:34<R4F_Debian>jmcnaught, I tried to unpack the file as root user: it was created a new file with the design of a lock on the top icon and I can not delete this file. How can I move this file to the trash? It's giving the message: Access Denied
01:35<R4F_Debian>jmcnaught, sorry, the correct message is: Unable to trash file: Permission denied
01:36<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: don't use root for this type of task. now you need to use root to undo this. did all the files unpacked from the archive go into a single directory?

01:40<R4F_Debian>let me try it here, jmcnaught, just one moment, please
01:41<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: that will make the files in your Downloads directory owned by the 'r4kramer' user instead of 'root'. If there are sub-directories you can add a "-R" after the "chown"
01:41<R4F_Debian>I see, jmcnaught, let me try it here

01:47<R4F_Debian>no problem, jmcnaught, I tried to use " chown r4fkramer /home/r4kramer/Downloads/* " as root, but gave error

01:49<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: i think you're still repeating the typo in the path. It should be /home/username/Downloads/* (which means all the files in the Downloads directory of your user, whatever your username is)
01:49<dede>hi everybody. during debian installtion, can i use lvm-encrypt on a ssd? if not, is there another option for encryption on a ssd?
01:50<R4F_Debian> is under heavy load right now :(
01:50<R4F_Debian>I have to wait here
01:50<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: we prefer here anyways

01:52<jmcnaught>dede: what i like to do is after it sets all that up, i go into the "configure LVM" menu and remove the largest logical volume (/home for example) and create it again but a little smaller so there is unallocated space. Then you need to select that LV on the main partitioning menu and select use as, and set the mount point again
01:52-!-Altitudes [] has quit []
01:53<jmcnaught>dede: totally optional, but it's nice to have unallocated space on the LVM volume group. you can use it for snapshots, or making root bigger when you realize you made it to small

02:01<dede> hi, the reason i was asking was because i read that i'll need to enable TRIM which makes encryption a little less secure

02:05<dede>so what you guys are saying is - do the lvm+encryption at installtion, then follow this guide -
02:05<dede>would that be a good idea?
02:06<jmcnaught>also i think most new SSDs are supposed to be rated for so many TB of writing it's very unlikely you'd be writing that much each day to wear it out like that. some SSD models are blacklisted for trim support in the kernel though

02:07<dede>that's also true. i'm not worried too much about writing 20gb per day for 10 years :-)

02:08<jm_>I do both, 25% over provisioning + TRIM every N months
02:08<dede>also, just thought of this one - what about swap?
02:09<jm_>I just put swap on ssd, it gets used so little with 16G of RAM it doesn't matter

02:15<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: /home/r4kramer is not the same as /home/r4fkramer. Personally I think it is safer for you to change the ownership of the files than to go deleting stuff as root

04:03<HermanDE>I was worried that I had something hanging... Someone suggested rm -r -f /
04:03<HermanDE>It seemed to work.
04:04<HermanDE>I just can't get it to reboot.
04:04<Stummi>obvious trolling. The rm version in debian won't let you do that ;)
04:05<HermanDE>I did have the problem.....
04:05<HermanDE>Just solved it by a touch of PXE + preseed + ansible....
04:05<HermanDE>Like a new shiny penny again.
04:05<HermanDE>Just bothered by the full device. Nothing in the logs... Inodes were full.
04:05<beatdown>You can rm -rf /*
04:06<beatdown>It works
04:06<HermanDE>fsck did nothing.
04:06<HermanDE>Even a mkfs -S did nothing.

21:58<HhIiLl1>hi jmcnaught, i'll answer in order, just a sec please
21:59<HhIiLl1>basically what started the issue was me attempting to reduce shutdown time. I tweaked a couple values in the systemd config file to be 1 second instead of 90
21:59<HhIiLl1>after doing that, i would get a timeout error after booting up
22:00<HhIiLl1>right after decrypting the drive
22:00<HhIiLl1>and it would just sit there and never load
22:00<HhIiLl1>so i'm trying to recover the default systemd config file
22:01<HhIiLl1>through rescue mode but am having some difficulty

22:03<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: what values did you change by the way?
22:03<HhIiLl1>ah i mentioned those values earlier today
22:03<HhIiLl1>were you logged in all day today? you could probably scroll up
22:03<HhIiLl1>i can look up again tho

22:43<HhIiLl1>no it just sits there, retrying
22:43<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: if it just takes a long time to boot, "systemd-analyze blame" can tell you the culprit
22:43<HhIiLl1>yeah it takes a long time
22:43<HhIiLl1>like forever
22:43<HhIiLl1>it never starts up
22:43<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: if you remove "quiet" does it tell you what's taking a long time?
22:43<HhIiLl1>one time i let it sit for like 30 minutes
22:44<HhIiLl1>and then when i rebooted it said something about the temperature
22:44<HhIiLl1>it gets stuck at random lines jmcnaught
22:45<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: and you changed all the lines in /etc/systemd/system.conf to defaults (either commented out or removed)?
22:46<HhIiLl1>login screen this time!
22:46*HhIiLl1 high fives

22:47<HhIiLl1>could you potentially help with the boot up issue?
22:47<HhIiLl1>and it taking forever to shut down?
22:48<HhIiLl1>you've helped immensely already
22:48<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: for the bootup issue you could put the output of "systemd-analyze blame" on . Also checking the logs with journalctl is where you would look for clues
22:49<jmcnaught>for shutdown issues to use journalctl for the previous boot you would need to enable journal persistence as described in /usr/share/doc/systemd/README.Debian
22:49<jmcnaught>(or look for clues in /var/log/syslog and other log files

23:17<jmcnaught>HhIiLl1: you're welcome. i was distracted for a bit. each of the lines in that paste is a service you can check with "systemctl status servicename" or see its logs with "journalctl -u ModemManager.service" for example. the ones that take a long time are the one to look at first
