02:15<horriblenoob>good evening, so uh im not sure where to turn with a networking question. I installed "seafile" on a local system & was able to access it via any local node using the ip; however, I could not access it from outside my network
02:16<horriblenoob>I changed my local systems hostname/domain name (to a one) and was succcessfully able to connect to said node from outside my network; however, can no longer connect to it locally
02:17<horriblenoob>I think if I change my hosts file on a pc it might fix the problem for one network node but I can't change all my nodes hosts files, is there somewhere I can go to make the changes for everything?

02:34<jmcnaught>horriblenoob: your router might be using dnsmasq behind the scenes, or something very similar. it may or may not have an interface for adding hostnames
02:35<horriblenoob>jmcnaught: its pfsense, evidently they call it "DNS Forwarder" I'm reading the manual now
02:36-!-mactimest [~mactimes@] has joined #debian
02:37<horriblenoob>jmcnaught: LOL the manual needs a translation into plain english, or a glossary at least.
02:38<jmcnaught>libvirt also runs dnsmasq on the virbr0 interface it creates, so i actually use that as my first line in /etc/resolv.conf. this lets me resolve hostnames for VMs running on my system (jessie doesn't have libnss-mymachines)
02:41<jmcnaught>horriblenoob: you could also run a DNS forwarder or resolver on a computer on the LAN, and have the router tell all systems to use it

04:23<dpkg>brcmsmac (brcm80211 prior to Linux 2.6.39) is an open source <mac80211> driver, supporting 802.11n PCIe devices based on Broadcom <BCM4313>, <BCM43224> and <BCM43225> chips. Firmware is required (bcm43xx-0.fw, bcm43xx_hdr-0.fw), ask me about <non-free sources> and install the firmware-brcm80211 package to provide. Access point and adhoc modes are supported since Linux 3.10.

10:23<frlttrwrd>(1) sometimes I get random restarts; (2) sometimes I get random graphics freezes (mouse cursor still moveable, image frozen and nothing clickable; I can still ssh in); sometimes usb stops working randomly or doesn't work at boot (often happens after (1) and (2)); sometimes 3d accelleration doesn't work after boot (KDE desktop effects don't work and can't be enabled; often happens after (1) and (2)). I guess it's a hardware problem, but what logfiles
10:23<frlttrwrd> could have relevant information? dmesg, syslog, Xorg.0.log. anything else I should look at?

15:51<somiaj>HiTree: you shouldn't need a speical repo, debian repos should all provide the current point release of jessie
15:51<HiTree>none does.
15:51<somiaj>HiTree: it could take a day or two for the mirror to update so that could be the issue
15:52<somiaj>HiTree: if you have jessie-updates in your sources.list you may also have most the updates already.
15:52<HiTree>The release-file itself says 8.4.
15:53<somiaj>HiTree: It can take a little bit for the updates to happen (espically with all the arches). I don't know how long it is supose to take historically though

15:55<somiaj>HiTree: as long as you have the main jessie repo in your sources.list and in your sources.list you are just fine and should just wait. 15:56<somiaj>HiTree: Hopefully the mirrors update soon, but and are just mirror redirectors, and i'm unsure how quickly mirrors update with changes.
16:00<somiaj>HiTree: use jessie-updates for now if you want the newest bug fixes before the point release hits the mirrors
16:01<HiTree>no. waiting for the release. But looks like there's a problem though not noting any...

17:31<vert18>I have a .deb that was made for mint/ubuntu it's not a ppa. it's a daemon for an i2c panel on the front of my computer. the script in the package starts a modprobe i2c-i801 and then exec a /usr/sbin/fpsvc but running that in a term shows it could not detect front panel i2c bus... not sure if mint/ubuntu uses this .deb i have on my debian testing system isnt working right, any ideas?
17:33<Brigo>if it could detect the front panel it should be a kernel/modules issue.
17:33<Brigo>couldn't i meant :)
17:34<amacater>If it's prior to 16.04, Ubuntu used sysvinit / upstart. Mint - not sure. I suspect the modprobe means that you have a module built against a kernel. Where's the source ?

17:35<Brigo>i2c-i801 module exists in 4.3 debian kernel, at least.

21:22-!-andrus_ [~andrus@] has left #debian []
21:23<Guest3148>R4F_Debian: your question is probably better suited here:
21:25-!-Guest3148 is now known as yuicat
21:25-!-andrus [~andrus@] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
21:26<R4F_Debian>yuicat do you know what is the 'curl' utility for youtube-dl in Debian Jessie ? Should I install it ? This source you've passed doesn't explain about it...
21:29<yuicat>R4F_Debian: curl is just another utility for transferring data
21:29<yuicat>the command noted in the github readme can be replaced with wget, etc
21:30<R4F_Debian>I see now I understood about it, thanks yuicat. But my issue is not explained here. This is a tutorial for basic use, doesn't explain how to help on fixing this issue I'm experiencing here
21:31<yuicat>no problem R4F_Debian- if you think you have a problem that you can replicate across different environments, create an issue via github
21:32<yuicat>other people might be having the same problem

21:47<R4F_Debian>no, it does not make sense for me, what I have here is simple issue, but don't know how to fix it, although I've tried it first. Taking a long time reading a manual, if my time is not enough for it is not reasonable
21:48<R4F_Debian>I can replicate it across different environments afterwards, not now. The idea is not bad, but I ought to fix this issue urgently. that is why I ask for help in this channel....
21:48<yuicat>I'm not sure how you can diagnose your issue as "simple" if you don't know the solution
21:49-!-zeromon [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:49<R4F_Debian>it is not difficult to get it through an intuitive perspective. Your analysis is not enough for this case.
21:49<somiaj>R4F_Debian: youtube is regurally changing how it generates its pages with the videos and the script may not always be up to date as youtube changes.
21:49<somiaj>,v youtube-dl
21:49<judd>Package: youtube-dl on amd64 -- jessie: 2014.08.05-1+deb8u1; jessie-backports: 2016.02.22-1~bpo8+1; sid: 2016.02.22-1; stretch: 2016.02.22-1
21:50<R4F_Debian>Hi somiaj
21:50<somiaj>R4F_Debian: have you tried the script which is available in jessie-backports which is much newer than the one in jessie (by about 1.5 years)
21:51<R4F_Debian>no, somiaj, didn't know about this script, can you help me on this, please ?
21:52<somiaj>R4F_Debian: youtube-dl is a script. Just install the package from jessie-backports (not the one from jessie)
21:52<R4F_Debian>First of all, could you please see what is happening here ? The video is extracted completely, but youtube-dl does not finish its process, apparently
21:52<somiaj>R4F_Debian: apt-get -t jessie-backports install youtube-dl
21:52<somiaj>R4F_Debian: the script in jessie is probabaly just outdated and doesn't work with the newer youtube pages.
21:53<R4F_Debian>so, the first thing to be done is delete this I'm using here ?
21:53<somiaj>i.e. as youtube changes so does the youtube-dl script which downloads the video.
21:53<somiaj>R4F_Debian: no, just install the package from jessie-backports and see if it works as expected
21:53<cra1g321>if it's just as script, why not just grab the latest version from it's homepage ?
21:55<jmcnaught>cra1g321: if a Debian package works, why bother with installing by hand from upstream?
21:56<cra1g321>jmcnaught, from the couple mins i've looked at it, the script can update itself, so why wait for the maintainer ?
21:56<R4F_Debian>somiaj, see this output: youtube-dl is already the newest version.
21:56<cra1g321>if it's something like a program then of course a debian package makes sense
21:56<R4F_Debian>Please, somiaj, take a look on this:
21:58<yuicat>R4F_Debian: that output doesn't have anything useful in it
21:58-!-AntumDeluge [] has joined #debian
21:59<jmcnaught>cra1g321: mostly because the Debian package will handle dependencies, and will be upgraded with the rest of the system, and that's better for most users. It could turn out that R4F_Debian needs to use the upstream version to resolve the issue, but then that's one more thing that needs to be updated separately from the packaged software on the system
22:01-!-juan [~juan@] has joined #debian
22:01<R4F_Debian>yuicat I think you couldn't understand my issue here, for you didn't try it, and I'm absolutely sure you don't have the minimum idea about what is my issue here (if you had, you wouldn't never say: "that output doesn't have anything useful in it". But there is a real problem here....

22:02<R4F_Debian>Thanks for attention, somiaj. Nice to see you again here, jmcnaught. Thanks for observation about my issue here !
22:02<somiaj>R4F_Debian: it might be the youtube-dl script in debian is outdated. I noteced there was a recent release, but in sid I am getting a similar issue, It paused at Downloading MPD mainifest

22:03<R4F_Debian>I see, somiaj, in my case, the outuput is not concluded here, but the video is extracted succesfully. But, if the process in the command line is not concluded, I get a bit worried and confused about why it is not finished
22:04<jmcnaught>i just tried the youtube-dl from jessie-backports, works for me
22:04<somiaj>jmcnaught: maybe it is the video he is trying to get, I just tried it in sid to test
22:04<jmcnaught>it could depend on the format the video is in..
22:04<cra1g321>i dont disagree with that, just think if the package contains a version of the script that is voer 2 years old, to me it makes more sense to have try get a newer version, thankfully we have backports :)
22:04<R4F_Debian>here is in .mp4, jmcnaught
22:05<R4F_Debian>I always prefer .mp4 for my needs here
22:05<somiaj>R4F_Debian: yea my script works fine for a video I tried, but when I used the link you gave it didn't work. It could be something with the video/link you were using

22:15<jmcnaught>bash was interpreting the & in the youtube URL as "run this command in the background"

22:17-!-capradma_ [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
22:17<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: nah stick with bash. for youtube URLs, after the .com/ part you only need the "watch?v=zjS1wfpKEmQ" where the random looking characters after v= is an ID for the video.
22:18<somiaj>R4F_Debian: afiak that is POSIX sh syntax so another shell would still have the issue
22:18<somiaj>I think quotes can help with that
22:18-!-capradm__ [] has quit [Read error: No route to host]
22:18<jmcnaught>after the video ID there's an & sometimes in the youtube URL that tells youtube another parameter, like &playlist=blahblah for example

22:36<R4F_Debian>removing the first ' & ' and everything after it
22:37<R4F_Debian>ok, I will try it here
22:37<R4F_Debian>hey jmcnaught, hey somiaj, other example finished without issue here !
22:38<jmcnaught>R4F_Debian: youtube URLs sometimes have a lot of HTTP GET variables, but a program like youtube-dl only needs the video ID specified by v=
22:38<jmcnaught>and & is the delimiter separating GET variables
22:39<R4F_Debian>Please, so the first '&' and after it is not necessary for extraction using youtube-dl always, jmcnaught ?
