00:55<R4F_Debian>Hi all, I decided to compile 'clementine' for the version I downloaded as binary package, seemed to me bugged, for it wasn't working fine here. Tested it in Debian Jessie 8.5
00:56-!-Juno-Reactor [~Juno-Reac@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:56<R4F_Debian>Please, I would like to know if I shall have problems with this compiled version, before going ahead and install the built packages through dpkg -i

00:58<jm_>you have compiled exactly the same version as is in jessie already - why do you think anything will change with regards to your problems with it?

00:59<R4F_Debian>pure ingenuity I think, jm_, but I simply tried to have clementine through other way.
00:59<jm_>R4F_Debian: I highly doubt anything will change
01:00<R4F_Debian>I see, jm_ (by the way, Glad to see you again !)
01:00<R4F_Debian>I will try to manage clementine again and see why it doesn't load audio files
01:01-!-feisar [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:01<jm_>does it say anything if you start it in a terminal?
01:01<jm_>maybe you need additional gstreamer0.10-plugins-foo packages
01:01<R4F_Debian>don't know, jm_, I will check it now, first I ought to conclude the installation here
01:01<R4F_Debian>I will tell you afterwards, if you permit me, please
01:02<R4F_Debian>I see, let me see what happens here, jm_ :)
01:03<jm_>(although it already depends on -ugly so that's unlikely)
01:04<R4F_Debian>didn't understand, jm_.. depends on -ugly... ?

11:33<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

18:18<somiaj>betterchangenick: well they do have their own support community, but since they use debians packages they also get the debian configs and they may not change them. That is why we try to nicely point users to a proper place to get support.

18:39<somiaj>betterchangenick: and as for linux, I would suggest avoid optimus hardware.

18:53<somiaj>betterchangenick: as for install image, netinstall image works fine, if you have a wifi card or nic that needs non-free firmware, the unoffical installer will help with this (But it does contain non-free firmware)
18:54<bill-auger>betterchangenick: you started off sayin that the reason you are here is becuase you can not get your nvidia card to work - yes?
18:54<bill-auger>then the stable image is probably not going to help you with that - you probable need the non-free firmware and even then you may have some work to do

21:47<betterchangenick>wich brings me to my new issue --- in that picture --- using SUDO --- what up with that error -- how come not see my password --- laughed when it said i was going to be reported :p
21:47<sney>yes you used the testing installer which means you installed testing.
21:47<sney>both of those things are normal sudo behavior.
21:48<sney>also, to become root with sudo, you can use 'sudo -i'. running "sudo su" means you are a noob
21:48<betterchangenick>k --- so ditch the testing on next format for updated kernels
21:48<sney>that is the opposite of..
21:48<betterchangenick>LOL @ noob :p
21:49-!-vertex [~vertex@] has joined #debian
21:49<bounce>yeah, when you type your password into the terminal (for sudo certainly, and many other things) it will not show it to you
21:49<sney>with debian, unstable is newer than testing which is newer than stable. the current stable is version 8.5. testing and unstable have newer kernels and newer packages, but they also have more bugs and unpredictable things. new users generally should only use stable.
21:49<bounce>in case someone looks over your shoulder
21:49<betterchangenick>yea i know that bounce -- just the response it gave me -- that the current user was not programmed into sudo?
21:50<bounce>betterchangenick:) that's correct. You have to be given permission to use sudo
21:50<betterchangenick>sudoers file
21:50<betterchangenick>guess i better google that one
21:50<blast007>betterchangenick: if you set a root password when you installed Debian, it didn't set up sudo
21:50<bounce>Or, add it yourself if it's your machinche ;)
21:50<bounce>machine *
21:51<sney>if you ACTUALLY READ THE DIALOGS in the installer, when asking for a root password, it says "if you do not create a root password then your first user will have root access with sudo"
21:51<sney>but if you just type things without reading them then you will get surprises. :P
21:51<blast007>betterchangenick: the way to edit the sudoers file is to run 'visudo' as root
21:51<sney>really the best way is to add your user account to the sudo group, then you don't have to worry about syntax
21:52<betterchangenick>i created root password and userpass it asked next -- did both --- prolly the testing image i used
21:52<sney>no, you are still not reading
21:52<sney>if you DO NOT create a root password ...
21:52<betterchangenick>gotcha --- added a NOT at the end
21:52<bounce>you have a root password, and presumably know what it is
21:53<betterchangenick>added 2 "NOT's"
21:53<sney>anyway, become root, 'usermod -aG sudo newuser' and then log out & log in, you will have sudo access
21:53<blast007>oh yeah, forgot there's already a handy 'sudo' group
21:53<bounce>`su root` is a decent way to become root
21:54<bounce>(type in your root password, when it asks)
21:54<sney>even just 'su' as it will assume root if you don't specify the user you are switching to
21:55*bounce learned a new thing
21:55<bounce>thanks sney :)
21:55*sney thought everyone knew that
21:55<bounce>never assume :)

23:05<JesseW>(asked about this in #debian-perl but haven't gotten a response yet, so I thought I'd try here) On a jessie system upgraded from wheezy, I'm getting a "Perl API version v5.14.0 of Digest::SHA does not match v5.20.0 at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl/5.20/ line 210." error.
23:09<bill-auger>JesseW: this channel is really just for general user discussion - that seems like a fairly serious error - you should probably find the proper bug tracker to report it on
23:09<sney>JesseW: sounds like an incomplete upgrade, since jessie is on perl 5.20, any remaining 5.14 packages should have been upgraded
23:09<JesseW>bill-auger: OK, that makes sense. While serious, I hoped it was a *known* serious error. :-/
23:10<sney>possibly just re-run 'apt-get dist-upgrade' and see if anything got left behind.
23:10<JesseW>sney: hm. Thanks. I can certainly do that.
23:10<sney>bill-auger: that's not really accurate, anyway
23:11<bill-auger>what isnt accurate - this channel is not for general user chat?
23:11<sney>this is a support channel for debian stable users

23:11<JesseW>I found a somewhat related bug from back in 2013:
23:11<sney>while sometimes they do get redirected to mailing lists or bug trackers - most problem triage happens here
23:12<bill-auger>oh ok - i did not realize this was a support channel - then you came to the right place JesseW
23:12<sney>JesseW: at a glance that would have been during or before the transition to 5.20 so probably unrelated, unless you are still using perl packages that only exist in wheezy
23:12<sney>(i.e. never got a newer version for whatever reason)
23:12<JesseW>I don't *think* I am -- what arguments to dlocate (or apt-cache or aptitude search) should I use to check?
23:15<bill-auger>in that case i would like to report that a few weeks ago my adorable weasel friend was replaced by a scary fox :)
