01:37<fletch_>need some help anybody. I just downloaded the latest debian os on a wiped desktop and now when ever I log in it says "oh no. something went wrong" and redirects me to the login page or a black screen. Know whats wrong?
01:38<jm_>probably an issue with graphics, perhaps consider using something other than gnome
01:39<jm_>or find out exact reason for the problem
01:40<fletch_>is gnome something other than debian, or is the part that I picked during set up?
01:40<jm_>it's the default desktop environment, there are other options - xfce lxde are lighter, kde is somewhat similar
01:40<jm_>but it might be as simple as a missing firmware, who knows
01:41<fletch_>do you know if I have to delete everything and re-download to get soething other than gnome?
01:42-!-Coestar [] has quit []
01:42<jm_>no, you simple install another thing next to it assuming there's enough free space left, but maybe spend some time investigating things first, i.e. check gdm/session log
01:44<fletch_>I have enough free space, so just type that in and see what it says? sorry im new at computers
01:46-!-balrog [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:46<jm_>let's check the log first

01:49<fletch_>okay ill get it going, but during startup it says error something and then can not register or something with the serial port but it works through it to get me to the login screen. could that have something to do with it?

03:06<fletch_>So I just downloaded the newest i386 debian on a wiped desktop. When ever I go to log in it says "uh oh, something went wrong" Im not sure what to do? Any body have a clue?
03:06<jm_>do you have ~/.cache/gdm or /var/cache/gdm ?
03:07<fletch_>hey nice to see your still on. how would i tell?
03:07<jm_>login and check?
03:07<fletch_>okay so I logged in where would it say?
03:08<jm_>ls -l ~/.cache/gdm or /var/cache/gdm
03:08-!-Gabriel_7 [] has joined #debian
03:08<fletch_>so type those in?
03:09-!-coldtobi_ is now known as tobi
03:10<fletch_>typed in the the second one and it said its a directory
03:11<jm_>and the first?
03:11<fletch_>stupid question but where do you find the wavy symbol?
03:12-!-Helleshin [] has quit []
03:12<jm_>on us keyboard it's shift + key_left_of_1
03:12-!-Unforgiven [] has joined #debian
03:12-!-neiljp [] has joined #debian
03:12<jm_>you can also type ls -l $HOME/.cache/gdm instead
03:12<jm_>or cd && ls -l .cache/gdm
03:14-!-claw [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
03:15<jm_>you need to do that as the user who you tried to login with in gdm, not as root btw
03:16<fletch_>it says no such file or directory but gives me a list of things
03:17<jm_>what did you type exactly?
03:17<fletch_>oh and says cannot access .cache/gdm right before that
03:17-!-claw [] has joined #debian
03:18-!-T0rch [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:19-!-MarcosNM [~marco@] has joined #debian
03:19<fletch_>I typed "ls -l ~/ .cache/gdm"
03:19<jm_>aha no space between / and .!
03:19-!-MarcosNM [] has quit []
03:20<fletch_>it says no such file or directory
03:21<jm_>ok so let's check files in /var/cache/gdm - cd there and run ls -lrt, put the last file listed on the paste site
03:21<dpkg>Do not paste more than 2 lines to this channel. Instead, use: or for pics. Use for large files (think tar.gz) up to 100MB. Remember to tell us the URL of your paste! Cannot cut and paste? Ask me about <pastebinit>, <nopaste>, <wgetpaste>.
03:21<jm_>the first one preferably
03:22<fletch_>so type in "/var/cache/gdm - cd there and run ls -lrt"?
03:23<jm_>cd /var/cache/gdm<enter>ls -lrt<enter>
03:23<jm_>you are definitely a candidate for reading some material after this is done
03:24<fletch_>I know! this stuff is hard!
03:26-!-pamaury_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:26<fletch_>Okay another noob question, what do I do? Im using my laptop to type this while i work on the desktop

03:29<fletch_>no but is says that there are 32 total but is only showing me 8

03:33<fletch_>and thanks so much for the help

03:34<jm_>login as root on another tty, ctrl-alt-f2 and login, ctrl-alt-f1 should get you back to the other session
03:35<fletch_>okay what would be the root? What I named the computer?
03:36<jm_>no, root is the superuser, it asked you for root password during install
03:36<jm_>so username is root

03:36<fletch_>sweet got it!

03:49<fletch_>it gave me the same thing as before
03:49<jm_>you did not type the command as I gave you :)

03:50<fletch_>haha okay Ill try again
03:50<jm_>ls -lrt /var/cache/gdm | nopaste<enter>
03:50<fletch_>The one above enter?
03:50<jm_>it has to be exactly like that
03:50<jm_>well yeah above enter sounds OK
03:51<jm_>the only way I get the generic URL is if there's no input for nopaste
03:53<fletch_>i swear im typing in in right "ls -lrt /var/cache/gdm | nopaste"

03:54<jm_>if the command without |nopaste part shows directory listing then no, does it?
03:55<fletch_>Ill try it in root and see what happens
03:56<fletch_>gave me the same thing
03:56<fletch_>the the generic url
03:57<jm_>huh, what we are trying to achieve is for me to see your dir listing without you having to type it all
03:59<fletch_>when i type in with out the | nopaste it gives me "Total 0"
03:59<fletch_>could that be the reason?
03:59<jm_>in that case I'd expect to at least see "Total 0" on the paste site
04:00-!-diocles [] has joined #debian
04:01<jm_>but yeah total 0 means there's nothing useful there anyway
04:01<fletch_>dang! Okay so where to now?

10:18<cruncher>yes, you can choose that
10:18<installer>since i use lvm under looks should i mark any partition as bootalbe?
10:18-!-matt-pls [] has joined #debian
10:19<cruncher>but its the same, if you install mbr to the 1st hd, windows will overwrite it (and im not even sure that works having mbr on 1st and debian on 2nd))
10:19<cruncher>n, the problem is with your concept basically
10:19<cruncher>best would be if you install windows first (assuming it is windows that you want to install in future))
10:20<cruncher>then replace the windows boot loader with grub
10:20<matt-pls>Morning, I am on 3.20 and need to remove synaptics & evdev for touchpad support, but when I try to uninstall it tries to remove libinput-all and task-desktop? is this normal? can I reinstall after or will everything break
10:20<cruncher>or oyu install debian to the 1st hd, and when you install windows make the 2nd hd be seen as the first as windows is "egoistic"
10:21<cruncher>then you just configure grub to boot windows as well

10:21<somiaj>matt-pls: those are just meta-packages, so all they do is pull in all the packages and can be safely removed with no major effect on your system.
10:21<installer>cruncher: sounds like a good option. another question. is it easy to encryypt the bootloader?
10:21<mnuhmnuh>matt-pls: is "synclient TouchpadOff=1' not enough?
10:22<somiaj>matt-pls: just be careful, sometimes the meta-packages are holding all the other packages (which are marked as auto install) in. YOu may have to mark some packages as manual install to keep apt from thinking they should be autoremoved
10:22<cruncher>well, depends what you consider easy, but i guess the general answer is no
10:22<somiaj>matt-pls: and as another option you can use xinput or other ways and just disable the device as opposed to removing the drivers
10:22-!-towo` [] has joined #debian
10:22<installer> i ll need 2 partition 1 efi unencrypted and 1 encypted right?
10:22<cruncher>and i guess with bootloader you were speaking about the debian boot partition
10:23<somiaj>installer: I thought you said you were using legacy boot, you won't need an efi partition in that case
10:23<cruncher>installer, i thought you said you have a legacy bios?
10:23<matt-pls>well I like to disable it for keyboard-nipple but have guest users who need it on. FN disable is broken when libinput is not defaul
10:23<somiaj>matt-pls: look at xinput
10:23<installer>somiaj: yeap u re right

10:24<installer>u can install encrypted bootloader with legacy?
10:24<cruncher>installer, yes, the basic idea is to have the boot partition unencrypted, and perhaps the root/home encrpyted.. if thats what you mean
10:24<cruncher>i dont really know about uefi partitions.. never used them
10:25<installer>so to sum it up: i Should install both mbr, debian and bootlader ont the same LUKS encrypted partition?
10:25<cruncher>that wouldnt work

15:24<somiaj>actually that may not work, that just lists the options, it dosen't list the files assoicated with them
15:25<somiaj>grawity: dpkg --status packagename, then look under 'Conffiles' for the list of all conf files (and their hassum)
15:25<grawity>hmm no
15:25<grawity>I mean, --purge also deletes whole directories
15:26<grawity>(both /etc/nginx and /var/log/nginx had quite a few files not tracked by dpkg at all)
15:26<somiaj>it shouldn't delete any directories which have config files that was not created by the package.
15:26<somiaj>(i've seen it error out, with 'did not remove directory foo, because foo was not empty'
15:26<grawity>ah well, it did. even though some of them were also owned by another existing package, too
15:27<somiaj>hmm, wish I had a simple package to test this with, let me find one

15:31<grawity>example 2: removed letsencrypt because it was replaced by certbot (and became a transitional package, I think?), and `dpkg -L letsencrypt` showed no files at all
15:32<somiaj>grawity: okay, on my system using debian pcakges /etc/nginx is filled with config files from the nginx-common package. I am adding a blank file to that directory and purging to see what happens

15:34<somiaj>grawity: I was able to reproduce it, seems that dpkg doesn't check things as nicely for config files, but for non config files I get stuff like "dpkg: warning: while removing nginx-common, directory '/var/www/html' so not removed"
15:34<somiaj>so I am surprised that it doesn't do this for config directories
15:34<grawity>yeah, it kept my /var/www, but nuked both /etc/nginx and /var/log/nginx (not that I miss the logs much, but.)
15:35<grawity>are logs generally 'config' files in dpkg?
15:35-!-Q-Master^Work [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
15:35<somiaj>not in my mind
15:35<grawity>anyway, I suppose it's not entirely unexpected, given the purpose of --purge
15:35<somiaj>it could also be dpkg is letting the postremove script do this, and the script is just being destructive
15:35<grawity>but it should at least keep files already owned by another package, imho >_<
15:36-!-Q-Master^Work [] has joined #debian
15:37<somiaj>grawity: correct, this behaviour seems strange to me that dpkg would delete files not 'owned' by a package. confiles are a special case, but it should still adhear to this in my opinion

15:39<somiaj>according to the man page: "Note: some configuration files might be unknown to dpkg because they are created and handled separately through the configuration scripts. In that case, dpkg won't remove them by itself, but the package's postrm script will
15:40<somiaj>grawity: seems to be an issue with the postrm script, maybe file a bug against nginx, but in the postrm script there is the command (under purge) "rm -rf /var/lib/nginx /var/log/nginx /etc/nginx"
15:40<somiaj>I'm unsure on policy here, but it isn't an issue with dpkg knowing what files to remove or not, it is the package script that is being very agressive about cleaning up stuff.
15:41<grawity>I guess it's the same with letsencrypt then?
15:42<somiaj>that would be my guess, dpkg won't remove files that are not owned by the package. Config files are somewhat a special case, and a packages postrm script can also have additonal things it will do durning a 'purge' which as we see could be more destructive than what dpkg would have done.
15:43<kion>Can someone explain why do I have on my activities bar two firefox icons, one says Iceweacel --> Firefox ESR and the other only Firefox ESR?
15:43-!-R4F_Debian [~r4fkramer@] has joined #debian
15:43<R4F_Debian>Hi all
15:43<somiaj>kion: with the latest security update, iceweasel (firefox 38-esr) has been upgraded to the current firefox-esr version 45.
15:44<somiaj>kion: also during this upgrade, the iceweasel branding has been droped. It is probably just an artifact from the iceweasel transitional package during this change.
15:44<kion>somiaj, But now I have two firefox icons, what should I do?
15:45<R4F_Debian>Hi somiaj, some time ago it was noticed that should happen. Now it's done. Do you know the reason Debian Project doesn't use iceweasel package and logo anymore ?
15:45<somiaj>kion: once you complete the upgrade you can remove the iceweasel transitional package, maybe that owns one of the icons. (I'm unsure as I don't use firefox and haven't experinced this)
15:45<grawity>because they no longer have a reason to use it
15:45-!-hjak1876jhjd7182 [] has joined #debian
15:45<R4F_Debian>just delete one icon, kion. You have only one firefox installed
15:46<R4F_Debian>the two icons refers to just one firefox package in Debian Jessie
15:46<kion>R4F_Debian, cool, thanks
15:46<somiaj>grawity: I am not seeing any specific policy attached to 'postrm purge' and what is considered 'follows policy' in terms of how agressive the removeal is
15:46<R4F_Debian>you are welcome !
15:46<somiaj>grawity: I guess the lesson is becareful when you purge because the package script may take out whole directories without checking them first.
15:47<somiaj>R4F_Debian: its a long history. Debian stable is frozen and doens't like to include new packages. So for years debian would backport security patches to a version of firefox no longer supported or matained by mozilla.
15:48<R4F_Debian>Oh, I see !
15:48<somiaj>R4F_Debian: mozilla did not like that debian was providing (although it was secure) an older version of firefox which may not contain many of the features and confused users. Thus mozilla used its trademark (firefox) and refused to let debian distribute its trade mark on an older version of firefox.
15:49<guildenstern>and then firefox started doing long term esr releases anyway
15:49<R4F_Debian>I see, so that's why firefox logo is back again...
15:49<somiaj>R4F_Debian: so years past, and browers got biger, and bigger and with this got more and more security holes. It got to take way to much time to backport the security pathces back to the version in jessie, so in wheezy debian changed its stance. Browsers will now be fixed with a current upstream release (to make the security fixes easier for the security team)
15:49<kion>R4F_Debian, Thanks indeed, you were right, I had two icons and only one installation of Firefox
15:50<somiaj>R4F_Debian: and thus the original reason mozilla took the trademarks away from debian is no longer the case, and a few years later they let us distirbute their trade mark again.
15:50<R4F_Debian>yes, kion, you have just one firefox installed on your Debian Jessie
15:50<guildenstern>is iceweasel still a thing
15:51<guildenstern>ah just a transitional package

15:51-!-Blacker47 [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
15:51<somiaj>guildenstern: though some people have taken up the process of using the iceweasel brand and debranding their own version of firefox, this is no longer done by debian.
15:52<kion>Will same thing happen with IceDove and Thunderbird?
15:52<somiaj>R4F_Debian: yea the iceweasel vs firefox was a constant confusion, so I'm glad it is no longer there.
15:52<R4F_Debian>agree somiaj ! :)
15:52<somiaj>kion: I think so, but it won't happen in jessie. Unlike browsers, icedove will not be upgraded to the newer version during jessies lifetime, but in the next release it may no longer be there.
15:54<jmcnaught>one thing i don't quite understand is why there are two packages now, firefox-esr, and firefox (in mozilla.d.n and unstable).
15:55<R4F_Debian>Hi jmcnaught ! :)
15:55<somiaj>jmcnaught: and the m.d.n packages are causing conflicts with jessie too. Wasn't as clean as it could have been.
15:55<jmcnaught>right now it's possible to have firefox from mdn and firefox from jessie/main installed at the same time
15:55<R4F_Debian>so, in Debian, let's say, in 9.0 release, icedove trademark will be replaced by thunderbird again ?
15:56<lakj>evince ftw
15:56<somiaj>jmcnaught: I thought maybe sid was going to have both firefox and firefox-esr for the variety, but that seems strange because I doubt firefox will become part of the next stable. It could also had been an attempt at removing m.d.n alltogether, but we'll see, I think there is still a lot to straighten out before stretch.
15:56<R4F_Debian>sorry, somiaj, please, what is "m.d.n" ?
15:56<R4F_Debian>Fine, thanks
