00:23-!-Inverness [] has joined #debian
00:24-!-jova2_ [~jova2@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:29<somiaj>R4F_Debian: the first and third are errors about not being able to load firmware. You may be missing a firmware-foo package from non-free (what kernel are you using)?
00:29<somiaj>R4F_Debian: the middle line is an error with the nouveau driver and your nvidia graphics card. Not sure more than that.
00:30<R4F_Debian>Hi somiaj, let me check here through uname -mrsa: Linux r4fdeb 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u1 (2016-09-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux
00:31-!-_unreal_ [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:31<R4F_Debian>somiaj, these errors started to be shown after a hard drive damage, but they don't seem to be related between themselves, or am I wrong about it ?
00:32<R4F_Debian>This current hard drive with Debian Installation (btrfs option) is affected by several badblocks
00:32<somiaj>R4F_Debian: was this the harddrive the os was on? If the files (such as the firmware) or other files are corrupted due to the damage you will get strange issues
00:32<R4F_Debian>checked through 'sudo badblocks -sv -c 1024 /dev/sda
00:33<R4F_Debian>yes, somiaj, the hard drive the os is
00:33<somiaj>If your drive has bad blocks/is failing. I'd backup your data and recover it onto a new drive.
00:33<somiaj>Things usually only get worse once a drive starts to go.
00:33<R4F_Debian>yes, somiaj, it is done already, now I'm using it without any important data. Waiting a new ssd to replace it completely
00:34<R4F_Debian>waiting for a new ssd to replace this sata
00:34<somiaj>Well the first and third error are due to missing firmware or just bad firmware, you could install or reinstall the firmware packages and see if that helps
00:34<R4F_Debian>yes, in some occasions external keyboard and mouse stop to operate here
00:34<R4F_Debian>I use them in my laptop
00:35<R4F_Debian>somiaj, according your experience: do you think they are related to badblocks on this hard drive ?
00:36<somiaj>R4F_Debian: not enough info. If the firmware files started giving errors after a harddrive went bad I would assume it was due to the harddrive.
00:36<somiaj>but that is assuming that was the only major change since the time it was working.
00:36-!-pamaury [~pamaury@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:37<R4F_Debian>yes, so that is the case here, for I ran 'dmesg' before this accident and there was no error message in its output
00:37<somiaj>If you never had the firmware installed in the firstplace, then it is a different issue.
00:37<R4F_Debian>I see, so the case becomes more complex to be completely understood, I suppose....
00:38-!-NomadJim [~NomadJim@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:38<somiaj>One thing you could do is ls /lib/firmware and see if the two files in lists in the errors are there.
00:39<R4F_Debian>if that is the case of this last explanation you've passed me....
00:39<somiaj>But I woudln't suggest wasting a lot of time debugging a drive you know is bad and are going to replace.
00:39<R4F_Debian>yes, but it is only a doubt, since I will not use it for any important storage now
00:40-!-NomadJim [~NomadJim@] has joined #debian
00:40<R4F_Debian>ok somiaj, well, thanks again for Great Supoort. Glad to see you again here, somiaj ! :)
00:41<somiaj>Sometiems when a drive goes bad, it is really only just the few bad blocks and the rest is good. I belive there are ways you can block off those blocks and not write to them, but this is beyond my experience.
00:43<R4F_Debian>I see, somiaj, no problem, anyway it will be replaced. by a ssd (will install Debian Jessie 8.5 amd64 on it)
00:44<R4F_Debian>I must go now. thank you very much again, somiaj, really Glad to see you again here ! God Bless You !

02:13<Echoz>using jessie to write the image?
02:13<jmcnaught>apb1963: you should check with Ubuntu people if the same process is used to prepare USB installers
02:13<jmcnaught>apb1963: i told you how to do it for Debian, I don't know about Ubuntu
02:14<Echoz>I'm not sure if the mini.iso works from a USB medium, you should get one of the larger images
02:14<apb1963>It's virtually identical.... with ubuntu subbed for debian in many places.
02:14<apb1963>well... the netinst is a .gz file and I don't know what to do with that.
02:15<jmcnaught>apb1963: you should be asking in #ubuntu on which installer image you should use
02:15<Echoz>Yeah, I don't know what installer to use either, but i could help you get it over on a USB drive

10:05<TotallyNotKim>No, SNAT stands for Source nat, that means, that the kernel swaps out the source ip of a packet with it's own and marks the packet. When an answer arrives, this mark is being interpreted and the ip is swapped with the original one and than passed to the original eg nterface it came from

10:51<vmtest>but most of the camera use is by the host itself and desktops connect to eth0 zoneminder webserver
10:52<vmtest>would be so much simpler if I could just plugin cams to LAN, but they are not safe (phones home to china IP for "cloud" and who knows what else)
10:53<vmtest>plus they take a bunch of bandwidth so best to be off main network. :)
10:55<TotallyNotKim>I'm building the same structure right now, with a virtual lan
10:55<TotallyNotKim>I'll report back later
10:55<vmtest>TotallyNotKim, on a mission to figure this out. :) Thanks, been baning my head over this for days now

16:52<mreutman>when I run uname -a, I get the following
16:52-!-descala [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
16:52<mreutman>Linux debian 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u1 (2016-09-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux
16:53<towo`>that's normal
16:53<towo`>what is the problem?
16:53<mreutman>I'm trying to understand if 3.16.0- is the kernel version or if it is 3.16.36-1
16:53<mreutman>err, 3.16.0- == 3.16.0-4
16:53<towo`>it's 3.16.36
16:54<mreutman>hmm, ok. What is does the 3.16.0-4 imply?
16:54<towo`>in other words 3.16.36 is the upstream source which was used to build that kernel
16:54-!-TSPenguin [~Knecht@] has joined #debian
16:54<towo`>mreutman, you could read the changelog
16:55<mreutman>Ok, so if I was trying to compile a device driver for Debian, I should target 3.16.36 then.
16:56<towo`>you trying what?
16:56<djb>the -4 is the debian package revision
16:56<towo`>building kernel modules will need the matching headers for the running kernel
16:56<djb>oh wait, no that's -1... bleh
16:56-!-pmhahn_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
16:57<mreutman>Yeah, I guess I'[m just trying to make sure I pull the correct headers.
16:58-!-gfedel [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
16:58<towo`>mreutman, apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r) would install the right headers
16:59<towo`>if you have installed linux- and header-metapackages, you allways get the matching packages on upgrade
16:59<mreutman>One follow up question, say I have another debian machine set to Linux Debian 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt25-2+deb8u3 (2016-07-02) x86_64 GNU/Linux
17:00-!-massmc [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
17:00<mreutman>Gettign the driver built for that machine will require the headers for 3.16.7 then, correct?
17:00<towo`>as i sayed before, building modules will allways require matching headers
17:02<mreutman>Roger that, guess I'll go and hunt for the 3.16.7 headers then.
