00:00-!-ppc64 [~dclarke@CPEf81d0f84cb23-CMf81d0f84cb20.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com] has joined #debian
00:00-!-ppc64 is "Dennis Clarke" on #debian
00:01*ppc64 sorted out network connection
00:01-!-chelium [~chelium@2600-6c42-7400-06d7-0000-974b-4b7d-4963.dhcp6.chtrptr.net] has joined #debian
00:01-!-chelium is "realname" on #debian
00:01<ppc64>well not sure where to go with this but with buster alpha 3 I am at a loss to get NVidia GPU working regardless of the drivers I select
00:02<ppc64>chelium: how goes the audio battle ?
00:02<chelium>hey ppc64
00:02<chelium>Well, audio seems to work through monitors as long as I disable output through headphones
00:02<chelium>*one of the monitors
00:02<ppc64>I actually went to try a setup on an ASUS mobo with a NVidia GPU and fell down a dark well
00:02<chelium>*disable output through the audio jacks
00:03<chelium>I figured as much lol
00:03<ppc64>so pick one or the other but you don't get both
00:03<chelium>Thanks for trying though
00:03<chelium>I can hook up my headphones to my monitor but the audio quality is greatly reduced
00:03<ppc64>I have an ASUS Z270P with an NVidia Quadro card and that is close enough
00:03-!-riclima [~riclima@198-48-202-89.cpe.pppoe.ca] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:04<ppc64>you would be better off with the headphones on the small output audio jack on the mobo
00:04<chelium>I tried disabling sound through the monitor, but no setting appears to make my headphones work when plugged in through the audio jack
00:04<ppc64>question for you .. what sort of NVidia GPU are you using ?
00:04<ppc64>whoa .. weird .. I only get audio from the headphone jack
00:05<chelium>Although the weird thing is that I can hear sound for half a second while I'm plugging in the headphones then it turns off
00:05<ppc64>this has to be a bios config thing
00:05<chelium>I'm using a GTX 1070
00:05<ppc64>damn ... I have a 1070Ti and an older Quadro K4200 and in both cases now I have totally bonkered up my machine
00:06<ppc64>it is one of a few machines .. so I can wipe it and re-install
00:06<ppc64>install onto an SSD is pretty darn fast ... are you trying to run "Steam" on your machine with the 1070?
00:07<chelium>nah I mean maybe I'll install at it some point so I can chat on it
00:07<chelium>but right now I don't really need it
00:08<ppc64>well it works great on Debian stable but thus far the testing distro is a pain
00:08<chelium>ah damn
00:08<chelium>I'm on the testing distro Lol
00:08<ppc64>uname -r ?
00:08<ppc64>you have 4.17.0-2 ??
00:08<chelium>oh wait nvm
00:08<chelium>4.9.0.7-amd64
00:08<chelium>I think I'm on unstable
00:09<ppc64>nope .. that looks like good ol stabel
00:09<ppc64>Linux version 4.17.0-2-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 7.3.0 (Debian 7.3.0-27)) #1 SMP Debian 4.17.14-1 (2018-08-13)
00:09<chelium>oh lol I have it backwards
00:09<chelium>stable, testing, then unstable right?
00:09<ppc64>yeah .. everything on that rev should be fine
00:09<ppc64>yes .. exactly
00:09<chelium>hmm
00:09<ppc64>seen toy story ?
00:10<chelium>well I'm not sure why the audio jack isn't working
00:10<chelium>and yes
00:10<ppc64>okay so the crazy kid next door the blew up everything and destroyed stuff was "Sid" and that is the permanent name for "unstable"
00:10<chelium>ahhh lol
00:11<ppc64>so cat /etc/debian_version
00:11<chelium>9.5
00:11<ppc64>bingo .. stable
00:11<ppc64>okay .. so back to audio jack
00:11<ppc64>so I have a theory and a nearly identical motherboard
00:12<ppc64>it is a pain in the ass but looking at the BIOS config may be of value here
00:12<chelium>hmm anything you recommend I look at in particular or should I just go through all the settings?
00:12<ppc64>hopefully you have a second machine, laptop or something that supports this irc session
00:12<chelium>well
00:12<ppc64>hell .. don't go through all the settings .. that is a majot pain
00:12<chelium>this session is on the PC in question
00:12<ppc64>one sec
00:12<ppc64>well hell
00:12<chelium>I can get on my macbook though lol
00:12<ppc64>hold on a sec
00:13<ppc64>I am going to detach the ssd's from my ASUS mobo and brin up the BIOS config .. fairly sure it is in the Advanced Settings
00:13<ppc64>do you ever look at the ASUS Bios config ?
00:14<chelium>somewhat I had to mess with the boot settings
00:15<ppc64>dumb question .. did you flash up the bios ? see https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-Z370-A/HelpDesk_BIOS/
00:16<ppc64>it is super easy to do .. however may not be needed at all
00:16<chelium>no I haven't. Kind of scares me tbh lol
00:17<chelium>too many warnings about potentially bricking the mobo
00:17<ppc64>I flashed this one I have here earlier today ... was trivial
00:18<ppc64>so long as you have a decent UPS then you are fine .. anyways DONT BOTHER
00:18<ppc64>let me have a look here at mine because I know that I had a similar issue and I went into bios and set the audio to AC97 and disabled HDMI
00:18-!-sidmo__ [~sidmo@00026de1.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
00:18-!-sidmo__ is "sidmo" on #debian-next #debian-offtopic #debian-kde #debian
00:19<ppc64>however the HDMI may be the on board intel kit and has nothing to do with the nvidia gpu
00:19*ppc64 looks at http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/PRIME_Z370-A/E13271_PRIME_Z370-A_UM_WEB.pdf
00:25<ppc64>damn .. looks like Advanced options -> Onboard Devices Config -> Enable or Disable HD Audio device
00:25<ppc64>easy
00:25<ppc64>front panel type .. nah ignore that
00:25<ppc64>DVI Port audio enabled
00:25<ppc64>nothing fancy here
00:25<ppc64>however you get audio for a second and then it goes away

13:13<halvors>jitterstick: But link you send is for mdadm software raid.
13:13<jitterstick>halvors try sudo update-grub
13:14<halvors>What is that good for?
13:14<jitterstick>halvors to update grub, the bootloader.
13:14<halvors>Problem is that boot path is set to boot from the partition, which is never discovered.
13:15<halvors>Yeah i know, but that is not the problem, and done it multiplie times before.
13:18<halvors>For some reason dmraid is broken and can not detect the partitions on the raid assemble.
13:18<halvors>It discovers the disk just fine.
13:18<jitterstick>Grub is the software that supplies the paths available for boot.
13:18<jitterstick>The choices grub gives are the paths available to boot into.
13:18<halvors>jitterstick: But running grub update multiplie times does not change tha fact that initamfs need to know that the partition it's instructed to boot from actually exists...

13:29<halvors>jitterstick: I've now tried rebooting into Debian, still the same, partition is still not detected so grub provided boot path does not work!
13:29<jitterstick>go to /etc/default/grub find this line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" and add GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rootdelay=90" and you can also add "nomodeset" in the same parenthesis to avoid upscaled graphics. Then run sudo update-grub.
13:29<jitterstick>I found this solution here. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1877789&page=2

13:45<jitterstick>follow steps 6-16 on https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid
13:45<blast007>adding the dmraid=true again and see if that improves the situation
13:45<blast007>if not, then making the change to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT won't help either
13:46<halvors>blast007: Why do you guys want me to reinstall the bootloader, it's not the problem...
13:46<blast007>I don't
13:46<halvors>I've done all those steps before as i've said multiplie times. It does not work.
13:47<halvors>Again: Problem is that initramfs is not detecting partitions.
13:48<halvors>Will try reboot with the "dmraid=true" flag and see if that works. BRB :)
13:48<blast007>only thing I said was that before following his advice to make a persistant change to your grub settings is to try it as a temporary change first
13:48<halvors>Oh, i can just change it back and do "update-grub" again right?

14:33<jitterstick>well as long as it is activeted and showing in grub and the dmraid=true flag is present and sudo update-grub has been run afterward then it should work.

19:55<halvors>Hi! How can i install language packages in Debian? I know ubuntu have a gnome-language-selector which does the job. Any idea?

19:59<TobiX>halvors: tasksel should be able to do that

20:40<mnuhmnuh>that's odd. there are many task-<language>-desktop pkgs, but none specifically "english". instead, there's task-desktop.
20:42<annadane>i suppose that's it, then
20:43<annadane>though i would not have thought tasksel = lang packs
20:43<annadane>it does make sense
