00:18<rwp>Hello xxzz. I am an AIDE user. Not really an expert on it but I well versed.
00:18<rwp>What do you need to know about aide.conf for it?
00:19<rwp>I have never needed to modify aide.conf. The default stock file has always been okay for my use.
00:29<xxzz>rwp: I used the stock debian package first but the aideinit kept running for a few hours and didn't write anything in db
00:29<rwp>Strange. Can you tell why?
00:30<xxzz>so I compiled mhash --with-static and later compiled aide, it installed fine but it reads local directory as a /
00:31<xxzz>rwp: not sure, it took a lot of cpu time 80-90% and kept running for 7 hours
00:31<rwp>7 hours! Wow!
00:31<xxzz>yeah
00:31<xxzz>I reniced it to -15 but no joy
00:32<rwp>Something is definitely wrong.
00:32<rwp>In approximate terms what is the size of your system that it would be scanning?
00:32<xxzz>I don't understand the need for aide.wrapper when a user can set cron and configure other options from default package
00:33<xxzz>I have lots of files on 2x3TB disks
00:33-!-hiller [~ismail@129.205.113.6] has joined #debian
00:33-!-hiller is "hiller" on #postgresql @#postgresql-unreg #bash #debian-kde #debian
00:33<rwp>Let me refresh my memory on those things...
00:33<xxzz>but that shouldn't take this long
00:33<xxzz>my compiled version takes 3 secs
00:33<xxzz>works fine
00:34<rwp>By default the upstream aide wants a single configuration file. But that isn't very convenient.
00:34<rwp>It makes it hard for packages to install and remove files from the configuration file snippets directory /etc/aide/aide.conf.d/*
00:35<xxzz>hmm, I am not very familiar with compiling on Linux, mostly a BSD user
00:36<rwp>Therefore there is an aide.wrapper to concatenate all of those together first. It calls update-aide.conf to update the autogenerated one before calling the program itself.
00:36<xxzz>yes before initiating init I invoked update-aide.conf
00:37<rwp>Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat, SuSE, *BSD, Unix, HP-UX, All are pretty much the same in terms of the concepts. There are only details that differ between them.
00:39<rwp>If you compiled your own aide the program itself I expect to be the same. It is only the config file parts that are specialized for the process that I just described.
00:39<rwp>With a configuratoin file in /var/lib/aide/aide.conf.autogenerated and aide being called pointing to it.
00:39<rwp>If you have a basic system then I expect aide to run in seconds using the packaged version.
00:40<rwp>If it does not then I expect something to be wrong in the configuration of it.
00:40<rwp>Such as that for some reason it is getting stuck reading a fifo pipe file. Or it is walking down a remotely mounted directory. Or something similar.
00:41<xxzz>no remote mounts here
00:41<xxzz>do I need aide.conf.autogenerated?
00:41<xxzz>I am not sure about that
00:42<rwp>You only need /var/lib/aide/aide.conf.autogenerated if you are using it. In your self compiled aide I expect you would create your own config file.
00:43<xxzz>yeah
00:43<rwp>I would be interested in debugging the stock debian aide for you. But if you have uninstalled it and compiled your own and your own is working then I am not sure what else I can do to assist you.
00:46<xxzz>i will deinstall my own version, have created .deb already
00:46<xxzz>that wont be an issue
00:48<rwp>Here are my hints. Install 'strace' and use "strace -v -o /tmp/aide.strace.out aide --config /var/lib/aide/aide.conf.autogenerated" to see what it is doing.
00:48<xxzz>sure
00:48<xxzz>on it now
00:49<rwp>I hope I have that command right. I would hope there would be a clue in there somewhere as to what it is doing.
00:49<xxzz>I have strace
00:49<rwp>It might be looping around following a 'bind' mount down a tree, up and then down the tree again. Or something. Hard to guess.
00:49<rwp>Only one way for things to work correctly. But many ways for things to fail.
00:50<xxzz>lets see
00:50<rwp>Meanwhile... My laptop battery is down to 8% and so I will be dropping off the net soon whether I want to or not.
00:52<xxzz>n p
00:54<xxzz>strace can't open aide.db for reading
00:54<xxzz>there is no db and the new.db is 0 byte

08:16<Volley>trying to use f2fs with encryption ... ideally using pam ... unfortunately i can find little documentation on how to do so, and what i found so far fails me (there are examples with fscrypt, but fscrypt has specific requirements for the filesystem on root itself - despite not encrypting that - that i cannot fulfill)
08:18<Volley>my usecase would be a debian live usb stick. So - any suggestions? Ideally i would have mounted a f2fs on /home (or so), and the users home is encrypted and unlocked when logging in.

14:59<rwp>m_g_lewis, bootlogd isn't working in Debian 9 Stretch? It works great for me. If it doesn't work it must be that systemd has broken it. With systemd you pretty much have to do everything the systemd way and with systemd that is journalctl.

18:05<nightshift>Needing some help finding ways to simulate or reproduce the functionality of update-notifier.
18:07<nightshift>I've looked at unattended-updates but, unless I've missed something, it doesn't have the option to just tell me (when I'm in terminal) how many packages can be upgraded, without actually doing the download or upgrade
18:10<mnuhmnuh>nightshift: i only use apt-get update && apt-get upgrade in xterm, and it always presents me with a list of stuff it's going to attempt [Y/n].
18:10<mnuhmnuh>i don't like the idea of unattended-updates.
18:12<nightshift>mnuhmnuh that's what I do as well, but I'd like to script it in some way that every so often (x number of hours or days) it runs the script, then, next time I'm in xterm or ssh'd in it lets me know IF there are some available

18:19<nightshift>Basically, there USED to be a package that when you logged in in a terminal (or when you executed certain commands) would tell you something like "35 packages can be updated./n 22 updates are security updates." I want that back
