07:27<petn-randall>*a python virtual env
07:27<elwisp>petn-randall: thats odd, its kind of a fresh install
07:27<elwisp>something might have broken it on the other hand. It uses same python version for root as for my normal user however.
07:28<petn-randall>elwisp: "something"?
07:29<elwisp>idk, maybe i installed something that borked my python environment, but i have no idea what that could be

07:49<kent1402>I'm having a problem of making bootable usb drive through dd command
07:50<jm_>is the problem in dd or really in the tool making the image?
07:50<kent1402>I'm currently using debian 9.6 to make kubuntu 18.04 bootable usb drive for my sister, but i tried so many time to test it's live usb, it just doesn't boot to the system
07:51<kent1402>oddly, when I tried to use unetbootin (which I kinda don't like), it worked
07:51<kent1402>So i was wondering what's really wrong with my system?
07:52<kent1402>I have tried to print the filesystem of my kubuntu 18.04 usb (which is /dev/sdb1 in my pc) and it's flagged on the main partition

09:30<xxzz>You should try KDE Neon, it is based on Ubuntu but much more stable
09:30<elwisp>why did chan move to oftc?
09:31<xxzz>Last September I tried it
09:31<petn-randall>xxzz: I'm not sure why you're asking about changing permissions for /usr/bin/cc, the question doesn't make much sense. It's a symlink, so you won't be able to change permissions for it.
09:32<xxzz>petn-randall: I don't want users other than root to have access to CC
09:32<xxzz>I know it is a symlink
09:33<xxzz>my bad, I am tired
09:33<kent1402>I'm curious about sid... Is debian sid works like arch linux?
09:34<petn-randall>xxzz: If at all, it's *root* that shouldn't be touching the compiler.
09:34<petn-randall>xxzz: What do you want to achieve with that?
09:35<xxzz>what good it is to have a user access to compiler in a library?
09:35<xxzz>I am trying to minimize the mess
09:36<sdk>kent1402: if you mean that it's kind of a rolling release than yes. but there's differences between the two distro.
09:37<kent1402>Oh really? Like how?
09:37<petn-randall>xxzz: I think you're implying something I fail to understand. What would it improve to restrict the usage? You installed it for a purpose, after all.

09:39<sdk>kent1402: -offtopic ;)
09:40<kent1402>I went there few moments ago.. but nobody seems to be alive, LOL xD
09:40<kent1402>Alright actually I have a question for this channel...
09:41<xxzz>petn-randall: I don't want to keep compilers because some users cause inconvenience, take time. They can do that at their house.
09:41<xxzz>it is a precautionary measure
09:41<kent1402>I'd really like to write sweden subcharacters like an 'a' with a little o and two dots upon them.. you know, different spelling means different sound.. how do I configure that?
09:42<kent1402>my keyboard is us english
09:42<petn-randall>kent1402: Probably by setting the keyboard layout to swedish.
09:42<petn-randall>xxzz: The uninstall it.
09:42<petn-randall>xxzz5: Then uninstall it.
09:42<xxzz>NVIDIA present
09:42<kent1402>I think that would bombardize everything >.< no
09:43<petn-randall>xxzz: It won't stop any user from copying their own copy over to ~/bin, and using it there. So you gain nothing.
09:43<sdk>kent1402: you could also use `altgr-intl` in `localectl`
09:43<xxzz>they can't write
09:44<xxzz>they may try some portable stuff if available but I will do something about that in time
09:45<xxzz>anyway I think I found out how to do that
09:46<duclicsic>kent1402: you can set a compose key, e.g. "setxkbmap -option compose:rwin"
09:46<petn-randall>If you run gcc as root, you've already got a broken procedure, no matter how you put it.
09:46<duclicsic>kent1402: then you can type an ä by doing <compose> " a
09:46<xxzz>petn-randall: I am not running it at the moment
09:46<duclicsic>an å by typing <compose> a a
09:47<kent1402>okay... let me try that...
09:47<kent1402>hold on..
09:47<duclicsic>the combos are fairly intuitive
09:47<xxzz>I will check debian doc and see what can be done
09:47<duclicsic>so that command i did makes your right windows key do it
09:48<petn-randall>xxzz: So what problem is it causing that users are running gcc? Maybe there's a social and not technical solution to this.

09:49<duclicsic>kent1402: also depending on your desktop environment there may be a more appropriate way to set your compose key, what i've suggested won't persist through reboots
09:49<xxzz>technical solution is to create a group, add a user to the group and change /usr/bin/gcc* group to the new group
09:50<petn-randall>!xy problem
09:50<dpkg>Slow down for a bit! Are you sure that you need to jump through that particular hoop to achieve your goal? We suspect you don't, so why don't you back up a bit and tell us about the overall objective... 09:52<kent1402>I just discovered about xcompose on debian wiki and currently reading it
09:53<kent1402>I'm getting the page is telling me to put the compose button, for example the windows super key to be the compose key indicator
09:53<xxzz>I am going to graze some

16:26<jhutchins_wk>Yst: Some of them even list linux. If it's compatible with Apple there's a good chance it'll work.
16:27<jhutchins_wk>Yst: Cruise the 'net, look for what's at the local stores, do google searches on the make & model on sale and see if other people have gotten it working.
16:28<Yst>The problem is the local store's website blocks me, so I've got to go there in person. I can write down what they offer, then come home and Web search each product, but that adds probably an extra hour of travel time.
16:29<Yst>I guess that's what I'll have to do. Drats.
16:29<Yst>I was hoping there was some make known to usually work or something (like the manufacturer actually cooperates with developers).

So I returned it, and dug out an old printer from the SANE-supported list which happens to have a built-in scanner, but that thing does nothing but flash an error code at me, along with complaints about being out of ink. I don't care about the ink though, I'm trying to scan stuff.

21:50<flound1129>also seems pretty insecure to populate a routing table on a static interface with whatever happens to broadcast on the network
21:51<flound1129>it took down my entire net
21:52<mnuhmnuh>don't let it run a name server?
21:52<Yst>mnuhmnuh: That seems like quite a chore, given that I'm hoping to start scanning things fairly regularly. Hopefully, daily. Also, do those places charge? I imagine they do, making this an expensive endeavour.

23:26<sim590>I have this udev rule file: http://paste.debian.net/1060914/ which works fine apriori. It calls this script: http://paste.debian.net/1060915/ (udev-setkeyboard) which in turn calls http://paste.debian.net/1060916/ (setkeyboard). The scritp seems to "work" since I see the notify-send line (setkeyboard:13) wworking properyly. However, the xmodmap line (setkeyboard:9) doesn't seem to work since I
23:26<sim590>can see that some of my key maps are not configured properly. If I call setkeyboard manually, the script works OK and my xmodmap maps are set. I'm puzzled as to what's going on. Here's my xmodmap conf: http://paste.debian.net/1060917/ and what I get after http://paste.debian.net/1060918/ connecting the keyboard. See that keycode 46 is not set properly...
23:27<sim590>Also, another strange thing: my xmodmap maps are set for my laptop's keyboard, but not my USB keyboard...

23:38<sim590>I'm thinking that somehow the udev rules may be called before the keyboard is correctly initialised, so the script is not running at the right time... I tried running some sleep commands, but doesn't help, so.

23:46<sim590>OK. I found out... by trial and error, really. The attribute value for NAME I had to use was "USB Keyboard Keyboard"... weird... I'd like a more generic way of selecting ANY keyboard. Any tips on how to do that? I don't want to list every keyboards I have.
